First of all, the hotel is difficult to find, even with a GPS. You need to make a turn when you see the ABC store near Ferragamo.
When we arrived it was about 4pm, and the valet parking attendant was very nice and took our car right away. The lobby was very big, crowded, with a lot of Japanese tourist which you feel like you're in Japan but that's half the fun. Checking in was pretty snappy and they gave us a complimentary upgrade to a partial ocean viewing room because I was a starwood preferred member. The elevator "problem" that a lot of the reviewers complained, I did not notice, and we were staying at a high floor.
The room was nice and clean, with a fridge and tea kettle. I was a little disappointed to see that the room does not have a microwave, because I know that a lot of the other hotels in Waikiki include a microwave in their hotel rooms since the price of food can be very expensive in Waikiki. The room has a lanai overlooking the ocean, city, and the mountain. We were very impressed with the view of the room. One thing that I did not like is that our lanai was very close to our neighbor's, so if they wanted to peek they could see into our room from the edge of their lanai, and can even climb across to have access to our room!
The fitness room was very nice and have all the essentials that a fitness enthusiast would find. One thing that kind of perplexed me was that you do not need your room key to enter the fitness area. Does that mean there were people who are not guests of the hotel that was working out next to me?? Hmm...
The location of this hotel is probably the BEST of the all the hotels in Waikiki. It is right next to the very modern, just built Royal Hawaiian Shopping center and center to everything that you can possibly want. DFS Galleria is very close and seriously, you cannot beat this location. HOWEVER, one of the things that kind of bothered me is the lack of beachfront: although the hotel is DIRECTLY next to the ocean, it does not have a beach in front of it. You need to walk around the hotel to the front of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel to get to the Waikiki beach. Now when we were there, Royal Hawaiian was closed for renovation, but the beach area in front of it was already crowded. I can only imagine how crowded it would have been if the guests from Royal Hawaiian were there too! We did not use the pool because we thought that the ocean water looked prettier than the pool, and why spend $$$ plus suffering long flight to go to a pool while you can enjoy the Pacific ocean?! With that said, I have to admit that the pool area was pretty nice as well, if you do not mind the VERY SLOW services from Rumfire (a bar/lounge that is right next to the pool), but then I'm a New Yorker so I am very used to fast and efficient service.
On our checkout day, since our flight leaves around midnight, we asked for a late checkout. They extended our checkout to 4pm, so we were happy with that. In addition, we received around $100 complimentary hotel credit to spend on any establishment in the hotel. Unfortunately we went to the Rumfire for that again (we didn't have time to go upstairs), and my BF got into an argument with the bartender because he was waiting forever to get a drink. Seriously, we were not impressed with the extremely slow and inefficient service of this establishment.
Overall, I would say that Sheraton Waikiki is well worth the experience, as long as you do not mind the large crowd and the very slow service from Rumfire.
