My family has just returned from a 2 week holiday in Waikiki staying for the first 8 nights at the Sheraton and then the remainder at the Hilton Hawain Villages. Well we ended up only staying at the HHV for 2 nights and left to go back to the Sheraton as it was so much better. Our flight arrived very early in the morning so we got to the Sheraton by 0830. Our rooms would not be ready until about 3pm so if you have a family with young children, best to pack bathers etc which are easily assessable so the kids will be occupied as waiting can be a very long day! To our surprise our rooms were ready at 1pm so that was great for us. Queues to check in can be very long depending on the time of the day.
We booked a Malia suite which was good in size for families however the rooms are in desperate need of renovation. The bathroom was a decent size but again, renovations need to be carried out to avoid leaking taps and old looking showers and toilets. Even though parts of the hotel are 'old' the hotel ranks one of the best in Waikiki in terms of location. In the heart of walking distance to shops, restaurents, the beach, bus terminals etc. The pools are fantastic both for children and adults. My kids loved the waterslides in the kids pool and the wonderful team in the Fun Department - Chams, Brendan, Veronica kept my kids entertained in the pool and around the resort with games and other various activities. We were lucky enough to have access to the Lehi Club Lounge on the 30th floor and this was great as we had really nice breakfasts and evening snacks which would be enough to classify as dinner. Worth the extra $ if you can do so.
My list of positives for Sheraton Waikiki:
Location - best for Waikiki
Clean - hotel is very clean and really lovely to walk around
Shops - walking distance to all main shops on the strip as well as good shops in the lobby
Pools - although a little cold initially, good sizes and facilites with water slides and games for kids.
Beds - really comfy with great pillows. Best I have ever had in a hotel.
Laundry - important if you are on a long stay, especially with kids. Washing machines and dryers are located on floors 5 & 18. Costs $3 wash and $3 dry plus $2 washing powder.
Fitness centre - excellent for a hotel.
Rumfire - great food and excellent for a cocktail and music on most nights.
Edge Bar - great food and hosts fire thrower everynight at 7.30pm - my kids loved this.
Rooms - are in need of renovation, however, alot of the hotels are quite dated and as long as they are clean, you will enjoy your stay.
Lifts - not airconditioned and neither are the hallways you walk down to your room - can be hot and stuffy.
Room service - not available until after 5pm.
Kids Club - I was hoping to put my 2year old in the kids club on a few occasions, however, when I went to check it out did not like it at all. Firstly there was not one child in care on that day (off peak I know but strange as there were lots of kids in the resort) and the room was small, had yucky carpet and looked really daggy and boring. The thought of putting my child in there really made me feel uncomfortable so this was very disappointing.
Walls are paper thin - we could hear children crying, toilets flushing, general noise from rooms next door which was annoying at times.
Just a few tips for Waikiki in general:
It is a busy place with lots of people but it really depends on the time of year you go - Oct/Nov just perfect. We were lucky enough to be there for Halloween and the place was really busy but so exciting too.
Must eat at PF Changs - around the corner from the Sheraton - modern asian food. Fantastic food, great prices and kids loved it too.
Weather - year round perfect weather. Even though forcast said rain, it would be a slight drizzle for a few minutes but still remained really warm.
Overall, we had a fantastic time in Hawaii and Sheraton waikiki. When we go back we will go straight to the Sheraton. The staff are to be commended on their friendly and positive attitudes
and although rates can seem expensive, if you research other hotels you will find it all works out for the Sheraton Waikiki.
