“Expected nice but exceeded expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2014

We have been to Honolulu numerous times. First time at Moana. I debated the size of the rooms, but ended up booking the Diamond Wing Ocean Front Rooms. Not huge but more than big enough. The rooms are recently renovated and well done.

The hotel itself is beautiful. I like it more than the Royal Hawaiian, the Kahala, maybe even the Halekalani. It was just the right size. The staff at check-in were great. I loved the amount of entertainment they had. Piano Players were great, and the live music at the beach bar area was very nice. Now, about the Beach Bar food. Average would be an overstatement. The food is poor. The beach bar at the Royal Hawaiian is similar. Why do they need to have such bad food here.

While I did not like that charges for umbrellas were now the norm, in retrospect, I like it. It made it more fair, rather than people just "saving areas" and never using them. If you pay, you likely show up.

Did not do the other restaurants at the hotel, so can't comment there. Too many great places to go outside hotel (Alan Wong's still one of my favorite places in the world. Went to the original Side Street Inn after recommendation . Totally Hawaiian, totally delicious, and quite a value. And a fraction of the price of Alan Wong's).

Aloha,
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We are glad to hear that you were pleased with your room accommodations and had a chance to enjoy the local entertainment at the Beach Bar. We are disappointed to hear that we did not exceed your expectations in regards to the quality of the food at the Beach Bar. Your feedback is appreciated as it allows us to improve our menu offerings. We also recommend dining at our signature restaurants, The Veranda and beachhouse at the moana. The newly added, Surfrider Café, also provides on-the-go meals to supercharge your day. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to the Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa on your next visit to Honolulu.

Stayed for a week here in the older section, what a lovely building and superb location! The room was a bit small but the bed was great, and the staff were fantastic. We felt well cared for and met some great people while we were there. The best coffee is just out the front. The day spa was amazing and overall we can't wait to return. Not going to bother looking elsewhere:-)

We stayed for 2 weeks in the historic Banyan section with an ocean view. The room was pleasent but the bathroom was tiny. It was bright and much more enjoyable than our stay at the Royal Hawaiian. I greatly disliked then rediculous chair saving around the pool ( a que at 7am to get a seat?) and the inflated beach prices ($65/day). The service was friendly, but we were there for New Years, Spending $600 for a prix fix dinner and we still didn't have entrees after 2 hours. They gave us comp champaine but still.

Either way, Wakiiki is a zoo, comparable to Las Vegas. If that is your thing enjoy, but there are much better beaches, environments, and areas to relax.

I had wanted to stay at the Moana Surfrider for a long time and was really looking forward to my stay in January of 2014. While there were many positives about my stay, there were also disappointments. I loved the ambiance and the decor. The back verandah was a wonderful place to curl up with a book in the afternoon. The spa facility was fantastic and the service was great. However, the bedroom was tiny and in need of cleaning more thoroughly and another paint and plaster job. Housekeeping could be hit or miss and on a couple of occassions I had to ask for the bins to be emptied. The Beach Bar service was poor and it seemed that the staff were disinterested in you were on your own and not going to drink alcohol. The resort charge was not clearly explained and was expensive.
While I am glad I finally fulfilled a dream, it was a little bit of a let down and I doubt I would stay at the hotel again.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the front are quieter

We booked 2 rooms for 6 nights in January.
The location and ambience is fabulous.
The best place to stay is in the tower area and as high up as possible as this is a very noisy hotel conducting alot of weddings . There are nightly singers in the outdoor area and the noise travels.
Our bed was most comfortable.
The bathroom is tired, very few products supplied,no shower cap, cotton wool etc. It is in the same room as wardrobe and toilet. Cramped. Shower curtain over bath.

Room Tip: Only stay in the tower area. I heard many a complaint about the noise and size of the other rooms.

I find some of the reviews about the Moana very surprising. I love this hotel, it is gorgeous and the location is the best in Waikiki. When we checked in we were given a complimentary upgrade,(thanks Starwood members club) and what an upgrade, in the newest part of hotel with an ocean view, The room was very big with nice accents. We had drinks under the baynan tree almost every night. The service was relaxed, professional and friendly. I also found the pool staff to be very helpful and remembering me. I found the hotel staff to be very nice and accommodating and always smiled as we walked throughout the lobby. Sitting on the porch in the big rocking chairs was a great way to relax and watch the excitement on the street. Can not forget to mention the amazing ginger peach water that was available in the lobby in the daytime, very refreshing. Can not wait to get back.

Room Tip: The hotel is in 3 sections, the main hotel (smaller rooms) but beautiful. The adjoining wing and th...

My wife and I stayed here on our way back from Australia to New York to help wind down before returning to work and the blistering cold.
All I can say is that we didn't want to leave! From the Yoga in the morning to the friendly helpful staff this is a great hotel.
We spent time exploring Oahu so I forgot to get my Ukelele lessons! A good excuse to return :)
We will definitely be back!
The only couple things I would even remotely pick on is that if you have court side facing room you hear the live music at night, but this is only an issue if you want to sleep early and that our shower curtain smelled like wet dog.

Room Tip: Court yard side rooms are noisier so maybe try a room a little higher or beach side if possible
