“My best holiday ever!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

We visited the Moana Surfrider in September 2012 after a few days in San Francisco. I was looking forward to escaping the hustle and bustle of the magic city!
When we arrived at Honolulu airport and even the shuttle bus driver told us that Moana was his favourite hotel on the island and that we would have an amazing time.
We checked in really easily. We had emailed the hotel well in advance to request a Banyan section room and we had also paid for a sea view (well worth the extra cost). Our room was quite small but we really didnt spend too much time in it. But it was really cosy and faced the beach.
The ocean was so gorgeous and blue, we woke up to this every morning :) In the evenings you would hear the hawaiian music next to the Banyan Tree, it really set the scene.
We booked a few trips with the hotel. Our favourite was the Polynesian Culture Centre. Sounds boring but omg, it was brilliant. Laughed so much, learnt loads and just had a fantastic time. Another trip we went on was Pearl Harbour, it was good but nowhere near as good as the culture centre.
The location is fantastic if you like being in the centre of what is going on. It was kind of the best of both worlds really. A gorgeous beach on one side and the other a busy shopping street with places to eat etc. There are so many lovely shops to buy little gorgeous pieces, not like the usual rubbish you get in Spain.
I think something to just be aware of is there is a selection of places to eat but for the Brits, I think it is fair to say most places are very American. Lots of American food on offer and the portion sizes are humongous. My partner and I had a starter each and shared a main and I was stuffed, this was in Jimmy Buffets. I think we just expected to have a more diverse range of foods than what was on offer. And Brits, dont get too over dressed. I made that mistake, they dress quite casual when eating out.
On our second last night, my partner proposed to me right in front of the hotel in the evening along the beach. It was so romantic and I was over the moon. I really hope to return one day in the future on an anniversary. It was the most perfect holiday ever. Thanks Moana!!

Room Tip: We paid extra for a sea view and I would really recommend this but if I was to return I would also p...

We loved our relaxing stay and our room in the diamond tower on the 7th floor.
Although the room was not huge, being able to enjoy hearing the waves and the lovely ocean view made this, our third stay here, the best one so far.

This is such a beautiful old hotel. So romantic, over-the-top superior service from the moment you approach the registration desk with a damp towel and lemon to wipe your forehead from the humidity and heat. SERIOUSLY, this is just the starting point!

Do NOT miss the famous macadamia nut banana pancakes with coconut syrup. We've had them several times each time we visit and they are famous for a reason. Rooms are lovely even in the 'old' section where we stayed. Towels, bed linens are top of the line.

Cocktails under the Banyon Tree is so relaxing. The rocking chairs on the front porch are perfect for people watching or waiting for the valets to drive up your car!

We cannot wait to return!

Last visit I was in the historic wing with a view of a blank wall and insufficient floor space to put a suitcase to pack. This time an ocean view from the Tower wing looking at Diamond Head. It costs MUCH more, but if you are coming here, do it. Reception staff very friendly and helpful. Food pretty average, really. It is all about location and the banyan tree courtyard.

Take a historic building add an amazing location and throw in a staff that is dedicated to providing a high level of customer service and you have the formula for an idyllic stay. From check in to check out, I can't say enough good things about this property. The staff from Samson at the front desk, Yolanda our maid and everyone in between went out of their way to ensure we had that aloha feeling. We had a banyan room overlooking the restaurant/lounge. As noted by other reviewers, the windows are single pane so you will hear the noise/music. For us this was a positive as we enjoyed opening the windows in the evening and letting the live music serenade us as we unwound from our "tough" days on the island. The room itself was spacious, well appointed and had an updated bathroom. The included continental breakfast was above average fare in a fantastic setting. Heading up to the 6th floor and sitting on the terrace to watch the sunset was a daily highlight for us. Overall, I have nothing negative to say about this property and woud definitely stay here again if I am so lucky to get back.

Though pricey, we loved our stay at the Moana Surfrider. Is it the best SPG property we've stayed at? Definitely not, but its charms lie in the architecture and location. It's so picturesque and there were at least 4 weddings going on during our stay here. Wifi was good, and free (because of SPG status). The location was perfectly central - easy walk to shops and restaurants! There are tons of hotels in the area though so I think this hotel is fairly expensive, especially since we couldn't take full advantage of the amenities (very busy).

PROS:
-gorgeous view
-great service
-nicely decorated and clean
-central location

CONS:
-very small room
-very busy (maybe because of weddings?) so communal areas were virtually inaccessible
-limited gym class schedule
-parking is off-site

We did not stay at the Hotel, public areas certainly looked really nice but at that time of year (christmas, new year) it was a bit out of our price range. Anyway, we went to the beach bar for Mai Tais and both the drinks and the atmosphere were really great. Probably the best "modern" Mai Tai I ever had and it is hard to beat the view of the beach, banyan tree and classic Hotel.
