We'll be back! It's quite dated, yes, but very well located with clean, spacious, well equipped rooms and friendly and obliging staff. There is great eating on the same block, buses to everywhere 100m away and its 200m to the beach. We loved Royal Grove.

The hotel is a bright pink building and kinda sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the Hilton, Monarch and the other 5 star properties (what does this tell you – hell yeah, prime location!). Hop, skip & jump and you are at the beach. Centrally located and close to all the shops, farmers market, restaurants etc. The hotel is also right next door to the bus stop, you have a car rental agency right in front of the hotel, and a lane away from the pickup point for all day tour buses. What more could you ask for?? The room itself was quite comfy with all the amenities you need for your stay. The property could do with some refurbishing but yet manages to retain that quaint charm. We were glad we stayed at the Royal Grove as it met our needs. As for the staff – true Aloha spirit!

Room Tip: Higher floors have less traffic noise and you can also catch a glimpse of the beach.

Every time we go to Waikiki we stay at this little hotel and we've never had a problem. When we go to places like this where a beach is available and so many activities, we prefer a cheaper place to stay cause the main reason is to have a bed to sleep, other than that we are never in the hotel. The staff were awesome while we were there and always helpful giving us information when needed. Housekeeping was very helpful and trusting as well. I really liked the Monday evenings here because there was music and hula dancing in the main area which was very enjoyable. The pool was always clean and the tables and chair area was always clean. We'll be staying here again in the future

We have returned recently from our 8th time staying at the Royal Grove, and made sure we booked for next year. As we arrived at the hotel, the greeting we received was more like visiting family - both from the staff on shift, and the other guests that are there the same time every year and have become friends - than going to a hotel. It was another great 2 weeks - the Monday night music session, the Friday night pot-luck, the afternoon around the pool listening to those folks from Australia practicing the Ukulele - you can't beat the price, the friendliness or the closeness to everything. Thank you Mr. Fong and staff.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the pool - the street side tends to be busy.

The Royal Grove has definitely seen better days. You certainly cannot beat it for the location and cost. If you are planning on staying in your room much, this would not be the place to stay. But for a two-minute walk to Waikiki, this place cannot be beaten. Be sure to enjoy the ukulele night. Mr. Fong, the owner, and local musicians sing and dance in the hotel lobby one evening a week, and it's a genuine delight to be there with them. I am not one for all the glitz that often is part of Hawaiian shows. I like this real Hawaiian experience with locals. Get some shave ice at the Coconut Cafe just two doors away from the hotel--best in Waikiki.

We have just returned from our first trip to Hawaii. We had 3 nights at the Royal Grove prior to a 7 day cruise around the islands plus 1 night on return from the cruise. After reading all the reviews I was more than happy to book a room here and was not disappointed. Yes, it's old, and some of the furnishings are dated, but for the price and location it can't be beaten. The rooms (we had 2 different rooms, one before cruise and 1 after) were clean and surprisingly spacious, the beds were comfortable. We didn't need the kitchen facilities, but the kitchen appeared well equipped with the basics. We had air conditioning which the staff turned on during the day but we turned it off once the sun had moved and didn't use it, we left the balcony door open at night (not a fan of air con if it can be avoided) and had very little noise. We used the supplied beach mats and towels for a swim at the beach, and I was able to take a book from the library for my flight home. The staff were very helpful and friendly, offering to ring and confirm pickup times and help with The Bus timetables. I would certainly stay again, excellent value for money.

We initially booked a room without airconditioning for 55 a night. We thought, if you can sleep without an aircon, it should probably be doable. Don't do it!! The first room we entered, looked very shabby and had sliding windows (the ones that cut fingers when they fall) and two pretty huge plastic fans. We had 5 nights ahead of us with 90F at daytime and 75 plus at night, we quickly decided that we 'needed' aircon as a standard! So back to the desk and we got another one, without having to switch later that week. Kudos!

That room was still being cleaned, it was the first and last time that week. The other days, they just changed the towels and did the beds. No more vacuuming after that moment.
The room itself is nice, not shabby if you don't touch the furniture, as it is close to falling apart! It feels like walking into the seventies and not knowing better, one could think the room has not been touched ever since!
The aircon works continously, so no switching on and off during the night and it keeps the room cold enough all the time. Then again, there are no windows you can open in the room, just the balcony door.
The wifi is only available for free in the lobby, maybe the owner likes to see his guests every now and then, but in our room, next to the elevator, we just didn't have a signal.
The tv was small by the way and shampoo only comes once a week. So buy it yourself!
There are pans and glasses in the cabinets and there is a large fridge and microwave.

Next door you have a great Korean place and a Denny's (with golden sign, other than red) for a fair price and the shopping centres are around the corner. Markets are there too, very cosy!
Parking can be done two blocks away in a hotel, for 15 dollars per night. Don't gamble on street parking, there is hardly any and everything is one way traffic, killing!

With the beach at the end of the street and surfboards to take in the lobby, what is the reason to really complain? You're in Waikiki for less than 100 dollars a night!! Just look through the old stuff, take this advice and save an awful lot. It can send one of the two to another Island for free and do a volcano tour. That's how much it is!!!
