“Good budget option in Waikiki”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2013

The Queen Kapiolani is a good budget hotel in Waikiki, where hotels are can be very pricey. We flew in from San Diego for my cousin's wedding, so were looking for a place walking distance to the beach but also within our budget. We booked a standard room for $127 a night, but were upgraded to a City View room at check in. Our room 515, faced the Honolulu Zoo, Diamond Head & the pool deck. The room itself was basic but clean, which was perfect for our needs. We were only in the room to shower and sleep. The walk to the beach is less than 4 minutes and about 15 min into the heart of Waikiki. The staff is amazing and truly make you feel the aloha spirit. Valet was $25 which is a little high, but that's a pretty standard rate in Waikiki. The valet guys were quick and nice, we never waited more than 5 min for our car. Our room did over look the pool deck, which did have loud music playing on Friday night about 7:30pm but when we came back at 11pm the music was done.

I only have two complaints:
1. The water from our bathroom sink was scalding HOT! We didn't complain we just brushed our teeth in the shower.
2. The window to our room did face the balcony of other hotel rooms, which made me nervous about the guests looking into our room. We ended up tucking the curtains tight while we showered, just for peace of mind.

These two issues aren't deal breakers and the Queen Kapiolani was just what we were looking for. We will definitely be back when we need a budget friendly hotel.

Aloha!! Thank you for sharing your comments regarding your recent experience at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel. We are glad that you found us very affordable with a great location, 4 minutes to world famous Waikiki Beach and 15 minutes to the heart of Waikiki shopping.

It was so wonderful to hear that the staff was amazing and truly make you feel the Aloha Spirit and the room was clean and perfect for your needs.

We certainly do apologize for having only hot water in the sink and our Maintenance staff would have been glad to replace the mixing valve. We can understand why you did not report it to the Front Desk and that you feel it was no deal breaker.

If I can be of assistance on your next trip, please do not hesitate to give me a call.

Mahalo,
Ron

This hotel was inexpensive so you get what you pay for. The hotel is located on the outskirts of Waikiki but is still within walking distance to shops and restaurants. The staff was friendly and helpful so checkin/out was a breeze. The room was okay but the bathroom was not very clean. I found dead bugs on the basin every morning which may have come through the window screens. The air conditioner vents were dusty so I covered my nose everytime I turned on the air conditioner. My room faced the street so it was noisy and I could hear drumming from somewhere during the day and evening. I had a king size bed which was comfortable so I managed to sleep well despite the noise.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not face the busy street. If you do, you won't get a nice view.

Aloha!!! Thank you for sharing your recent experiences while staying at the Queen Kapiolani
Hotel. As you stated, we do feel we are reasonable priced and offer great value. Many of our guest enjoy the location, within minutes of world famous Waikiki Beach and within walking distance to the numeorous shops and restaurants. It was also wonderful to hear that the Staff was friendly and helpful, so C/I and C/O was a breeze.

In regards to the bugs, which we feel are gnats, we have contacted our pest control company to evaluate the situation for us. We have also informed our Executive Housekeeper to work with Maintenance in the cleaning of the A/C filters to insure good air quality.

Please accept our most sincere apologies and we would look forward to serving you upon your next visit to our beautiful island.

My girlfriend and i recently stayed at the queen kapiolani hotel. We are "kamaina" in other words we live on oahu.I don't see as much aloha these days in waikiki, but the staff and entertainment featured at the queen kapiolani brought back memories of the aloha spirit I remember from the past. Our rooms were fresh, clean and cool. The view beautiful and lively.I best remembered the staff from the managers to the bell hops attending to our every need. The dinner show was great and the food was delicious and portions plentiful just how we like it here in the islands. The sunday pool party was an unexpected pleasure and a great oppertunity to meet other guests and enjoy the "aloha atmosphere".We will be visiting more often thanks to our experience and thank you,all of you at the queen kapiolani for all the aloha.Pat & Della

Room Tip: All oceanside rooms have great views of diamond head, ocean, and the honolulu zoo

The hotel itself is nice. The location is great, only one block from beautiful Waikiki beach, plenty of shopping and food options nearby. Front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good also. But the room, the "standard room", was awful. Just to clarify, we got a good deal for the standard room, so we fully expected that we would get the lousiest room they had. Even with our low expectations, the room was terrible. I have seen walk-in closets that are larger than this room. The two twin beds took up the entire room, with barely any floor space for our luggage. The windows were not solid pane windows, they had slats that folded up and down like blinds, so even when they are closed, they let air and noise in. And I mean NOISE. If you are sensitive to noise, definitely not the room for you. We slept, (if you can even call it that), with the TV on as well as the air conditioner blasting, and this was not enough to drown out the noise of the people partying at the pool area at night, and the noise of the traffic and the zoo in the morning. I should also mention that when we checked in, I specifically asked for a "quiet" room. Again, the hotel itself is fine and well located, so I am sure that if you pay a lot more for a better room, you would have a better experience than we did. Just don't book the standard room!!

Aloha! Thank you for sharing your recent experience while staying at the Queen Kapiolani Hotel. Yes, the Standard Room is our most inexpensive category and smallest room. It is good for those looking for a great deal and not spending a lot of time in the room. We do have other categories such as City View, Ocean View, Junior Suites and Penthouse units. It is deciding what type and size of room is best for you.

It was wonderful that you found the Hotel, itself was nice and location great. That the Front
Desk Staff was very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was good also. In regards to the noise from the jalousies, we are currently upgrading our windows to minimize the noise intrusion from outside.

Please give me a call on your next visit, so that we find the proper accommodations for you. We would be glad to assist you.

Ron

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the Queen Kapiolani as we celebrated our 49th Anniversary. We had a corner ocean view room on the 12th floor, and the view was spectacular - Diamond Head, the ocean, and the zoo down below. It was fun to watch the elephants and hear the tropical birds in the morning. The staff was outstanding, friendly and helpful, and housekeeping was very efficient. The hotel is very clean and the location is excellent - Waikiki Beach a few steps away, and many restaurants and shops very close by. Can't comment on parking, as we didn't need to rent a car - the hotel is very conveniently located on a bus line. We didn't get to use the pool, but it looked very nice and the breakfast was good. We had a great experience at this hotel and would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: Higher floors and corner rooms provide spectacular views and are quieter.

This was used as part of a package- for us ( father and son) it was ok but some other people may object . The room was a bit compact but again we weren't bothered . We didnt do breakfast there though the dining area poolside looked very pleasant ; staff were always happy to help and we were very near bus stops .

I imagine there are more convenient hotels nearer to the happening end of Waikiki but we were close to several amenties and shops that were just fine .

This hotel is clean, inexpensive compared with the other hotels, located right across of Waikiki Beach, close to restaurants and shopping areas. I checked around at other hotels for daily parking charges and Queen Kapiolani may be one of the most inexpensive hotels in regards to daily parking fees. Also, this hotel offers a discount on the room if you are over 50 (I think...please inquire to be sure).
