“Okay hotel for an okay price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012 via mobile

Great Loaction... walking distance to the beach, shopping and free trolley ride to the mall. The hotel has all the amenties to be a great place stay, but it hotel is in desperate need of an update. The conceirge was very helpful to help us book our touristy activities. Free WiFi in the lobby and computers for guest use for a fee.

If you're looking for a "resort," don't look here. If you need a place to sleep while enjoying Oahu, however, then you probably won't do much better for the money. I've stayed in worse hotels, but I've stayed in (much) better, too. This is a tired hotel, from the bed to the furnishings to the bathroom to the windows. As such, although Housekeeping took great care of us, the hotel didn't "feel" as clean as something with, say, newer carpet, fresh paint, "intact' curtains, and a solid bed. Internet service was free, but required a hardwired connection (unless in the lobby - umm... no thanks), so make sure your device has Ethernet. The location made up for it though. 2 blocks from the beach, the International Market Place was across the street (well, the back entrance, but so what - entry is entry!), lots of places to eat, and the Pink Line Trolley was a great way to get around. Sleep quality was pretty poor, all things considered, and not as much because of the old bed as the noise. The hotel is on one of the main streets in downtown Waikiki, and the traffic noise is pretty incredible. Trash trucks start at around 4:30am, and the various busses and shuttles shortly after. Bring a white noise maker or earplugs if you're a light sleeper, because a closed window won't make much of a difference. The staff were very friendly.

Room Tip: The higher, the better. If you can get a room facing the ocean, so much the better!

The restrooms of the hotel were in bad condition. The tiles were worn out and they gave a look of public restroom. My wife constantly complained to me about the restroom throughout the trip. The front desk staff wasn't very helpful either.

The only good about the hotel was the concierge lady, she was super nice and helpful lady. She told us about the snorkel spots, hiking spots and also booked our para sailing trip gladly.

Room Tip: Don't try to get the room too high, rooms on the upper levels are small.

Aloha Shahbaz A,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience during your most recent stay at the OHANA Waikiki West Hotel. On behalf of the staff and management, we apologize we did not meet your expectation.

We apologize our restrooms were in bad condition and it caused an inconveience for you and your wife. Though we are not able to renovate the restrooms, our Housekeeping team does strive to exceed expectations and provide a clean product. Again, we apologize we did not meet that expectation.

We also would like to apologize the Front Desk staff was not more accommodating. This is a concern and the department manager has been advised of this. We do try to train and coach our employees to always provide quality service. Management will look into this and coach the staff.

We are hopeful we will be able to welcome you back in the future. Renovations are being discussed for a couple years from now and we are hopeful you will return at that time. Thank you again for your patronage and time!

Mahalo,
OHANA Waikiki West Management

This hotel was recommended by friends who visit Waikiki regularly as good value for money. We booked a self catering apartment as we have dietary problems and the kitchenette was well equipped. There is a well stocked mini mart across the road which stocks take-away food as well as groceries, meats and limited fruit and vegetables. There area also literally dozens of eateries and restaurants in easy walking distance. Good shopping at the Ala Moana shopping centre is only a free Pink Trolley ride away. Easy access to the beach and shops to suit all tastes from brand name stores to souvenir shops. There is a tour desk in the foyer where we booked several excursions which again were well priced with a convenient pick up point at the rear entrance to the hotel away from the main street. The lifts (2) are slow but remember everything in Hawaii is on Island time...slowly does it.

Our family of four plus an Aunty shared the two bedroom unit. Having 2 bathrooms was a plus, especially as I was the sole male on holiday. The only drawback was being on the 18th floor there were 2 small flights of stairs to traverse as the lifts went to 17th floor only. However they were quickly walked up and didn't spoil our stay there.
Ohana west is dated, probably mid 1980's decor, but who cares? Hawaii is for holidaying not for moping about the hotel. The rooms were clean and cleaned out daily(except thanksgiving day, I got our own towels). If I wanted modern decor I would pay three or four times the price and go elsewhere. You too have that option! Anyway this was my second time at Ohana West, as the wife and I went last November 2011(during the time of the Apec convention). And guess what, we are going next year too. (am I cheap? Well maybe but who cares?I do appreciate value for money. It is clean, it is safe and the staff are great)
It has the most convenient location. The free pink trolley bus service right at our door, mini supermarket just across the side road, Chilis restaurant beside Lobby, International market across the road, Dennys across the road also, all you can eat seafood within 60 metres down the road, walk through international market and you're on the main road of Honolulu where you can eat at "Dukes" the best restaurant on Waikiki beach, and of course there is Waikiki beach.
Yes I would recommend this Hotel to my family and friends, telling them it is value for money. But if they require a more upmarket modern expensive hotel, they probably wouldn't be asking for my opinion, they would just spend the bucks and go to Trumps Hotel. To that I would SAY A LOOO HAAA!
See ya next year Ohana West....

My Husband and I stayed here for 6 nights during October. We stayed here because it was part of a package deal we got with the Flight Centre, and the highly recommended it.
Now here are the pros - VERY close to the main shopping strip, it's only 1 block away.
Across the road is an ABC centre and food place, underneath is a Chili's restaurant (which is DELICIOUS), there is also a pharmacy underneath and the international marketplace is across the road.
You get the free pink trolley pass, all you have to do it flash your key card.
The pool is nice.
Free wifi in the lobby and free wired internet in the rooms.
Great prices.
Clean rooms, awesome air con, good channels on the TV.

Cons -
The cleaner on our floor (we stayed on level 8) was horrible! We put up the no cleaning sign, and every day we saw her she told us off for having it out. She would ask when she could go in, and would constantly nag us, and not just a little bit, A LOT!
The concierge desk is a joke. They are selling time shares for a hotel by windum and they do not let up. There is usually a new person there everyday and they ask you all the time to go to them and check out the timeshare. Once we organised to go to the free breakfast and paid the $20 deposit (which you get back after the breakfast), we ended up making plans and chose to cancel and we didn't get our money back. Even when we asked.
Also they are the people you have to talk to to organise a shuttle to Aloha Stadium and Waikele Outlets. If you want to do these things, make sure you talk to them the day before. They got real angry at us for trying to organise it the day of. They were very rude about it.

If it weren't for the rather rude staff at the concierge desk and cleaners we would stay again, but that was just too annoying to endure it for another week or so!

Room Tip: Make sure you chose a room with at least a partial sea view. Our view was of neighbouring hotels. Al...

Aloha Pagetraveller,

On behalf of the OHANA Waikiki West Management team we apologize for the delay in this response. We would also like to apologize for the subpar service you received here during your stay in October.

The Management team is concerned about this and we will be investigating this as the service you receieved is not the service we expect from our employees. Your comments about the housekeeper has been forwarded on to the Director of Housekeeping and the bell staff will be addressed.

Though you mentioned you would not return because of the service, we would like to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future. If you could please contact the hotel and ask for a manager, we would like to address these issues with you. Thank you again for your patronage and comments.

Mahalo,

Really a very good location.
Walk anywhere in Waikiki.
Bonus free Pink Trolley to Ala Moana we used multiple times - a nice plus.
Bonus free phone local or to continental US first 15 minutes. Good for checking forwarding reservations, flights etc. - a nice plus
Good rates.
Nice housekeeper.
Wifi in lobby only, but CAT5 in room.
Reasonable TV stations.
Decent beds and amenities.
"Public" toilets on ground floor accessible by room card.
Some people say lifts slow, but we didn't notice - WE WERE ON VACATION!!!
Chilis restaurant on ground floor.
Nashville bar downstairs we didn't visit, but ever so close if you want a coldie.
Pool clean and plenty of loungers on 1st floor - used it every day.
Bar on first floor.
Laundry (quarters available at the lobby gift shop)) reasonably cheap and quick - great for that mid-week wash.
Food Pantry across the road (small albeit somewhat expensive supermarket) that is really handy! This turned out to be a plus!!!
I've stayed in 3 different hotels in Hawaii, but I would stay here again for all of the above. The budget of this place allowed us to spend more dollars elsewhere and enjoy our holiday immensely.

Room Tip: 17 floors. Must go for/ask for the highest you can get. This for both lifts, ice machines, and vie...
