“Unbelievable Honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2011

We stayed 3 nights during our honeymoon in late May. Upon arrival we were treated with the upmost respect and the service was top notch. I would personally like to thank the Outrigger chain for their treatment of U.S. military personal. I'm a United States Marine and could not be more thankful for the military discount this chain offers. It is touching to know someone genuinely appreciates your service and sacrifice.

We book an Oceanfront Suite thanks to Outrigger. I cannot begin to tell you how awesome this room is. It is huge and the view is breathtaking. The super comfy king sized bed sits looking right out at Diamond Head. You have like 3 Lanais to use so you get a pretty good view of pretty much anything. We loved the Jacuzzi right in our room. Of course they pegged us as honeymooners so we got a complimentary bottle of champagne. Every detail of our room and service we loved. We even loved the lotion the hotel provides its smells great, we still use them to remind us of Hawaii. The service was so great that they even hailed a limo to take us to Dolphin Quest.

We only ate at the Ocean House our first night there. Again the service there was great. We got a table right on the beach. Our server was awesome. He pegged us as honeymooners and gave us a free dessert and he took our picture and had it printed out and gave it to us. What a nice touch. The food was really good as well.

Overall this hotel beyond met our expectations and we loved every single thing about it. We would definitely stay here again when we come back to Oahu. We even stayed at the Halekulani next door and we would still choice Outrigger Reef on the Beach.

We spent 3 days/2 nights at outrigger reef on the beach. We were impressed with the hotel and facility. Rooms were clean. Valet, front desk and housekeeping were very polite!
The only rude employee was host who I spoke to on the phone. The instructions to hook up to internet in the room said to hook up ethernet cable from PC to lamp but it didnt work. Dialed 0 for host and she said "it should work! you need to log in to lodgenet via wifi!" LOL then you need to change instructions in guest booklet. Rear of hotel is right there on beachfront. There are nicer spots to swim on the island but need to drive. Hotel is not directly on Kalakaua which was nice and peaceful.Overall we would stay there again!

We stayed in Honolulu one night on our way back from Kona to Los Angeles, to see Pearl Harbor and enjoy Waikiki Beach. The Outrigger Reef was an excellent choice because of its location and value. The restaurants in this neighborhood are outstanding. The one drawback is that we ended up with a room with two beds rather than a king/queen which we would have preferred.

Liked the location, rooms were nice enough, although probably wouldn't bother paying for Ocean View next time - really just looking out at the building next door, with some water in view to the right. I think go the whole hog and book Ocean Front or save the pennies and go City View. Pool area a bit disappointing, but overall, for the money, we were happy. Our only grumble was with the Shore Bird restaurant. Breakfast was pretty average (Ocean House far better), and when two of our party of five decided to head down 20 minutes before the others to have a drink at sunset on our last night, we were told we could not have a table for five unless we were all present! So we quickly rounded up everyone else, only to be shown to a poky little table at the rear of the restaurant. Very cursory service - we left. Thought the overall service of the place was adequate, but no one was particularly warm or genuinely hospitable.

Beach out front quickly gets crowded with rented umcrellas and lounges (@$35/day) so not too much room left for others. Swimming not great in immediate environs, but no big deal to walk a bit further down the beach.

The hotel is really great, expensive but great. When we arrived they had our stay at 3 days, I had booked 6. They took care of it all through Travelocity and I had to do nothing. The beach is not so hot. Sand is course and there is really very little beach. The food at the pool bar is almost adequate. The Shore Bird resturant is pretty much Golden Corrall, but it's overpriced and you have to cook your own meat. Have only eaten breakfast at the Ocean House but those have been excellent.

My wife an I found the service provided by all staff exceeded our expectations. They were all friendly and went out of there way to assist. We both would recommend Outrigger Reef on the Beach as an excellent Hotel to stay.

First, let's get this out of the way: if you have opted to stay in Waikiki, then you have to face the crowds, traffic, and high prices (for some things) at some point. But Waikiki has its advantages (beach, entertainment, near Kap park and DH, somewhat "central" to major points of interest across the island), and we think it only fair to write about ORotB as a Waikiki hotel.

Second, we are former locals, thus making our stay in Waikiki perhaps more efficient than that of a first-time visitor. We rented a car for our entire stay, because we knew that we would be spending chunks of time in Kailua, on the North Shore, in the mauka areas above Waikiki, and east Oahu.

With that background, we think that ORotB is a good balance of service, amenities and price. It does not have a fancy infinity pool overlooking the ocean (instead, it has a family-friendly, salt-water pool in a sunny pavilion). It does not have the best restaurants of Waikiki (but *anyone* can go to the best hotel restaurants AND much of Oahu's best dining is not situated in hotels). It hosts its own grossly overpriced gift shop (and a reasonably priced one, too). And you are best to steer clear of the lure of the time-share sales pitch (nearly all take a polite "no" seriously).

Here's what the ORotB does have that would make us come back (and, in fact, we have stayed there twice!): large (larger than most!), recently renovated, well-appointed and thoughtfully designed rooms (love that the sink/vanity is separate from the shower/toilet); a setting on the beach (yes, it is rocky/reefy, but you can scoot over to the Halekulani beach) on the slightly less insane west part of Waikiki; amazing world-class Hawaiian musical entertainment every night; a generous towel (free) loan service; parking (although you PAY for it); a Starbucks on the first floor; a fabulous beach service team (including the Surf School); and overall great service throughout the hotel. Kudos to the valets who helped get the rust off our sense of direction, the check-in staff for accommodating our requests, and the housekeeping staff for making the sand go away.

Given its location and the peak season in which we were staying, our sleeps were remarkably quiet, with minor disturbances due to the ice machine and an occasional chair scooting across a lanai. We had a few problems with cigarette smoke coming into the room: smoking is prohibited by state law in all hotels -- including the lanais -- yet some guests cannot seem to abide. The hotel takes this law (and complaints about smoke) quite seriously.

Finally, some words about the condos next door, some of which are managed by Outrigger. Wanting a bit more autonomy with our laundry and dining (in), we gave one of these units a try (for a bump up in price). Overall, the move up was not worth it for us. On the superficial end of things, after spending several days in the classy and updated decor of the ORotB rooms, our condo room was comparatively dowdy and showed signs of age, including leaking tub faucets. Less superficial was that the window AC unit in our room made the noise of 10 tanks, which meant that we either slept in the twin beds (on our anniversary?) or slept through some rather humid nights (not uncommon when the trade winds die). The jalousie windows made blocking out external noise a futile exercise. But each unit is slightly different, so if you are sure that your unit's AC units are in working order, then perhaps a rental here would be suitable.
