“Great place to stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2013

We stayed at the Outrigger Reef for the first part of our Hawaiian Honeymoon: September 19-24, 2013 in a partial ocean view room. The Outrigger Reef is an excellent hotel and I would definitely recommend it. We took a cab from the airport (from other peoples recommendations on trip advisor) which was $40 plus tip. The driver gave us a coupon for a $30 for the trip back.

When we pulled up in our cab the bell staff immediately gave us attention and by the time we got to the front desk they had all of our stuff ready for check-in. As it was our honeymoon they had a bottle of champagne in our room the next day (we arrived late the first night) As mentioned you do need to use your room key to go up in the elevator- did not find it to be inconvenient.

The room was very clean and the king sized bed was very comfortable. I found it to be very quiet for a hotel of its size. The poolside entertainment was nice to listen to from our balcony. I found the sand at Waikiki to be very coarse after visiting the beaches on Maui.

We used the services of the activities desk- and yes the dreaded Wyndham timeshare people. The activities guy was great for last minute tours- but later found that we could have found the exact same tour for cheaper elsewhere. We did the Paradise Cove Luau and the Ocean Joy Snorkeling and Dolphin adventure- both of which were well worth the money... see my other reviews on those. We did do the timeshare presentation in exchange for the free breakfast buffet at the Shorebird and a $125 activities credit. I have done timeshare presentations in the past and this one was definitely more professional than the ones in Vegas. If you are willing to give up 2 hours of your vacation then why not try it out!

The Shorebird restaurant was amazing. The $15 breakfast buffet was delicious. It also provided the entertainment of watching the servers squirt water at the shorebirds who were after your meal- note: do not leave your food unattended or else your food will be theirs! We also ordered off the menu and were very pleased with the food... and $3.50 Mai tais :)

The hotel itself is located in a very convenient spot on Waikiki. We were able to walk everywhere, including the Ala Moana Shopping Center. Tour companies picked us up in front of the Embassy Suites which is literally just out front of the Outrigger Reef.

I really enjoyed our recent stay at the Outrigger Reef hotel. It is in a very good location right on Waikiki beach and very close to many restaurants. An open air lobby area linked to the pool and adjacent bars, shops and restaurants within make for a nice ambiance upon arrival. The staff are polite and very helpful. Our room was well appointed with very comfortable beds and pillows. Good lighting was most welcome( so many hotels have appalling lighting in their rooms). The air conditioning worked well and was unobtrusive. The rooms are well maintained and very clean. Free wifi is a great bonus. Many hotels in the USA now provide free wifi but it is very useful and welcomed. Australian hotels please take note! Phone calls to the USA and Canada are free. My only criticism is that the pool area struggles a bit to cope with a large number of guests at times. The pool is not huge but very nice and is a great temperature. It's nice and deep in the main with a roped off area in the shallows for the kids. A supply of ice cold water by the poolside is a great touch. Thanks for a relaxing and fun stay. It is a smoke free hotel which is wonderful!

Room Tip: We had a lower level room overlooking the pool but was still very quiet at night as the local style...

We stayed in July, so I'm a little late with my review.
My partner & I stayed here for about 9 nights. We were really impressed with the location, it's right on Waikiki beach and is near the shops & restaurants too. Hard Rock Cafe is just down the road & it's one of the best Hard Rock Cafes I've been to anywhere in the world.
Breakfast wasn't included, but there were choices of where you could go, we went to the restaurant overlooking the beach at the back of the hotel & oh my goodness, their breakfasts were simply amazing. The waffles are a must have for total indulgence. The service was also faultless & we went there nearly every morning without one bad experience with food or service.
The food at the cafe at the front of the hotel near the pool is also quite nice, but I wouldn't rave on about it or the service, it's not as good as what you get at the restaurants overlooking the beach.
Everyone we dealt with at reception were fantastic, then there was Tara who handles travel bookings at their travel desk who is an organised machine! She is so fast & really makes an effort to get the best deals and best spots for you for everything. She also makes sure you know what you are doing & gives you any required information.
My partner was impressed that there was a Starbucks at the front!
There was construction going on one morning which we complained about as it was early-ish on one of the days we weren't getting up early for a tour, the hotel was really apologetic & actually knocked something off our hotel bill which we were really taken aback by, it was an extremely nice gesture.
The rooms are an older style, but very appealing. As far as cleanliness goes, they were immaculate.
All in all, a great stay, great location, perfect service.

We stayed here for four nights in September after a cruise and really wish we had a full holiday to spend here. The hotel is spacious, beautiful and clean with large rooms and large comfortable beds. The room even had a balcony to relax outside which was great as we had a partial ocean view room (The rooms are in a rectangular block with the smaller end on the ocean and the sides having a partial view - we were on the end of the side so our view was pretty amazing).
The hotel is right on the beach (a small beach but a larger beach is only a short walk away) and the Shorebird Restaurant and Ocean House overlook the beach which made having a few drinks there even better. The view down the beach and over to Diamond Head was amazing especially when everything is lit up at night.
Reception and Concierge staff were very friendly and efficient and accommodated our requests without any hassle.
The hotel has three restaurants: Ocean House, Shorebird Restaurant and Kani Ka Pali Grill. I did not eat in the Ocean House, but the food in the shorebird was very good and was exceptional in the grill. The drinks specials in the Shorebird were really good and made drinking there in the evening superb and cheap for the Waikiki area. All the staff were helpful and friendly in both restaurants, but the staff in Shorebird are absolutely outstanding: friendly, talkative and you are asked whether you want another drink almost as soon as you finish your last one. This is also the case when sunbathing in the pool area. The staff here are friendly and very efficient if you want to have a few drinks by the pool. The pool area is lovely and matches the pictures and contains a spa area and plenty of loungers. We never had a problem finding a place to sit either in the sun or the shade. This is probably due to the beach area been so busy!
Entertainment was just right at the hotel with Hawaiian Music playing in the early evening near the pool / Grill and karaoke at the shorebird bar and restaurant later in the evening.
Overall, we had a lovely stay at this hotel and would recommend it and certainly stay in the future. We had a friend staying at the Sheraton and this is by far a superior hotel. The only thing that people might consider a downside is the pool area is not overlooking the ocean like some of the other hotels, which is a little bit of shame but it did mean it was less busy and easy to get a seat which balanced that part out!
Anyway, overall, great hotel, exceptional staff, large clean rooms, good food, drink specials, great value for money and an excellent location.

Room Tip: Try to get a partial ocean view near the end of the block as your view of the ocean is best

...well considering how often I'm ever in Waikiki I may as well be a tourist. I'd never set foot on this property before this weekend but now I think I may have to reconsider the concept of a "staycation." Everyone we encountered was so friendly (I mean really friendly and not just processing yet another guest body). And the guest rooms and amenities had a "local chic" that a certain other hotel down the beach totally failed to achieve with its recent renovation. The rooms are bigger than the norm too. The only downside is that the toilet flush is loud, so if you're going to sneak out to look at sunrise over Diamond Head...well... The pool is a nice size although I can't fathom hanging out at a pool when the ocean is steps away. We only had breakfast at the hotel but it was a nice spread with interesting touches like fruit quinoa. All the important bits of Waikiki are within walking distance. Next time we'll make time to check out the spa and have dinner at The Shorebird.

We stayed here for 6 nights in April in a partial ocean view room with a king bed. The room was very clean and a good size. I liked the bathroom area - plenty of room! The bed was very comfy and huge! We arrived early from our flight and we were able to use a room for 30 minutes to have a shower and freshen up. Check in and out process was very efficient, if a little impersonal but it is a large very busy hotel so is to be expected I suppose.

We ate at the restaurant by the pool a few times and the Shorebird once - both were good. The pool area was nice and we did use this quite a few times. The cold water dispenser with lemon and mint was very refreshing (this was beside the towel dispenser). As per the other reviews, the beach area directly in front of the hotel has rough coral but you only have to walk a few minutes up the beach and there is alot more room and lovely swimming.

I would definitley recommend this hotel, it is good value for money. I did a lot of research before we left and it is the best in terms of location/value and facilities. I would choose this hotel over the other Outrigger (Waikiki on the Beach) in terms of location. While Waikiki on the Beach is more central it is in a VERY busy area and every time we walked past on the beach, the bar area was packed! Fun if that is what you are looking for, but not very relaxing.

Overall, good stay and value for money.

Ocean view room was great - spacious and well-furnished. Got a great rate direct for 8 nights. Loved sitting on the lanai every morning. The location was central to (and safe for) walking to everything in Waikiki within a couple of miles radius. The beach was clean, and peaceful to watch the sun rise and set. We used Brett Thornbrue 360-485-3161 of Hawaii Cab Company for cheap airport transport as well as a tour guide several days. Also used a couple of the other guys in this independent cab network for transport. These guys are knowledgeable, safe, reliable and cheaper than most other options.
