I've just returned from my first trip to Hawaii and wanted to throw in my two cents about the Ocean Resort Hotel in Waikiki.

I booked my room very last minute and was a little nervous after reading some of the reviews of the hotel. I had visions of killer roaches and mysterious stains as I took the old but perfectly fine elevator up to the 12th floor.

To my surprise and joy, there were no odors, bugs or unpleasant hotel staff.

We had a clean room in an average hotel literally two blocks from the beach for $59.

Granted, anyone can have a good or bad experience at a hotel and I'm not doubting that people have had a bad time there but in my case, everything was fine and I certainly enjoyed putting my saved money to better use in hawaii.

If you think your $59 should get you the Surfrider or Outrigger experience, you probably shouldn't be reviewing hotels. However, if you want a clean room in a great location without much in the way of frills, I absolutely recommend the Ocean Resort.

We stayed in room 840 with city/diamond head views and kitchenette. The room was very spacious, clean and well equipped. Although the room was non-smoking and did not smell of smoke, previous residents had obviously seen fit to use the carpet to stub out their cigarettes, as evidenced by the half a dozen or so burns around the dining table. Such a pity since we were otherwise pleased by the overall cleanliness and presentation of the room.

The carpets and seating in the lobby and elevator foyers could use a darn good steam clean, but hey, we weren't sleeping there so we ignored it. Staff were genrally friendly and efficient, check-in was quick. Heaps of fresh towels & a reasonable sized bathroom. The lanai, kitchenette & ice bucket proved to be very welcome, especially for our evening drinkies as the sun set.

Warning: We took the big shuttle from the airport to the hotel & it took us 2 whole hours to get there due to Ocean Resort being one of the last drop offs in Waikiki. Not what you want after a 15 hour flight. Take a taxi for the few extra bucks. it's worth it.

Ocean Resort is not 5 star, but is good value for money & the location can't be beat. Will definitely stay there again.

We just returned from spending nine nights at this hotel and found it to be just fine. We had a large room with two full beds and a divan/single bed. There was a small kitchenette with everything we needed. The room was clean, not spotless, and comfortable. The TV worked well and had good reception on all channels. We found the staff friendly enough, certainly not rude as a few posters have noted. Our room was always cleaned before noon. The air conditioning worked well. The paper was delivered to our door every morning except Sunday. We didn't use the pool, it didn't look that inviting. The coffeemaker was small and didn't make very good coffee, but we found the Honolulu Coffee Company in the lobby of the Moana Surfrider and that became our daily treat. Price and proximity to the beach are two of this hotel's greatest assets. The Bus is just across the street and remember to get a transfer, you can use it in either direction, the drivers were generous with the expiration time and we never had to pay for our trip back. Yes, the place was a little tatty, but even the most expensive, 4-5 star hotels on the beach had faded lobby carpeting in need of a good vacuum. This is a relaxed beach community and that is just how things are. I never saw one prostitute near this hotel, granted we were in by 9:30-10:00pm each night. I would recommend Wolfgang Pucks at the end of the road for good food at a good price. We had a good experience at the Ocean Beach and would stay there again, definitely.

I'll make it short and quick
Cons: room did smell moldy, kitchen area was dirty, dishes were dirty. walls were dirty. a good scubbing was needed. dont use the stairs unless you like old and smelly things. room 1431

Pros: excellent location to beach and thebus line. Diamond Head was our view. ABC store was very near...they are on every block, just about.

TheBus can take you to DH and Hanauma Bay. Bus 19/20 goes to airport...a good hour drive. There is a location called Cheap Attractions, off of sarasota rd. Excellent for inexpensive excursions. we rented a car via them, for $33 and was upgraded, for free, to a convertible seabring.
