“Well located and comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

As we were staying in Honolulu only 2 days, we were interested in staying a few blocks back from the beach. The room with kitchen was large and comfortable. The real advantage is the location as we could easily walk to the beach, restaurants, & bus & trolley stops. The staff was pleasant and helpful. There are interesting activities offered to guests. The hotel is off the large noisy busy streets, an advantage.

Ilima hotel, Honolulu.

This hotel is ideally situated 2 streets back from Waikiki beach. Although it is showing its age and is a little outdated, it is excellent value for the cost. Staff were very helpful and courteous, and there is free wifi throughout the hotel and free car parking should you have a hire car. The rooms we very spacious and serviced each day and we had a balcony which gave a view to the south. The bonus of the kitchenettes is great as well. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: We had Room 605 which was fine.

Ilima Hotel came onto my radar through Tripadvisor and other independent sources when I was searching for accommodation for a week lay over from a visit to mainland USA. I was acting as ‘tourist agent’ for our party of four and we needed at least a two bedroom apartment. Through a combination of position (not too far from Waikiki Beach), generally very good reviews and price I decided to book a two bedroom suite with full kitchen for a week. I was able to specify one bedroom having a double bed and the other bedroom having two singles.
No matter where you are on Waikiki Beach it is quite a long trip from the airport. We arrived late one evening and took our chances with one of the many spruikers offering transport to Waikiki Beach. On arrival the hotel staff were very friendly and efficiently saw us into our apartment. The apartment was on the 7th floor facing the front of the building. It had a large lounge area, functional kitchen, the two bedrooms, bathroom and lanai (balcony). The apartment was serviced every day. While the furnishings were dated they fulfilled their purpose. Internet access was provided (we arrived on the day it became wireless accessible). There were 3 older style air conditioners.
The main problem with this particular apartment was in the main bedroom. For the first few days I couldn’t work out why the air conditioner just couldn’t get the room down to a comfortable temperature. The ones in the living area and the second bedroom performed well. On close inspection I discovered that the louvre windows above the air conditioner were not closing properly no matter how much force was put into the handle that controlled them. As a consequence the hot air from the rear of the air conditioner was funnelling up through the louvres back into the room! While I could have notified staff about the problem I didn’t want workmen in our room, particularly if we were away (as we were most of the time).
The Ilima Hotel has some interesting organised events that occur in the lobby. My wife took part in a couple of them. One was a lei making lesson where she created some beautiful leis. The second was a performance by a choir.
Waikiki Beach is only about a 10 min walk and there are tons of shops around where you can get supplies. There is no restaurant on site. There is a small pool out the back.
On our last day there we happened across the tour desk that has been manned by Alan for many many years. He is 88 years old. Chatting to him was one of the highlights of our stay at Ilima. We left very early the next morning in a taxi effectively organised by a very amenable Ilima staff member.

We received a very loving and friendly welcome on arrival.
The service and helpfulness of the staff was simply overwhelming. One can trustful turn to the staff with any questions and concerns and they were all very welcoming and helpful. Very great was particularly pleased that despite environmentally responsible use of resources, was always made sure that plenty of towels and shower and washing utensils were in the bathroom, which was very helpful for my uncle because his case was lost on the trip.
The hotel choir singing for the guests in the lobby every Friday, was so beautiful and heart warming.
A very warm ALOHA therefore to Karen, who made possible to me to move into a smoking room, and to Robin, who welcomed us so kindfull and friendly and helped us with the formalities for the missing suitcase, and to Jay, who gave me a free internet access and to all the others who have given us help, advice and warmth or made us a memorable stay with the Spirit of Aloha. MAHALO!

We stayed here in a deluxe studio with kitchen from 9/4-9/8/2013. Room was very large, clean, and we had a view from the 14th floor of Waikiki and the ocean with the Royal Hawaiian hotel right in front of us. Did not notice any street noise as we were up so high. The staff here is super friendly and willing to help with anything. Just 2 short blocks through Duke's Lane and we were at the beach. Could not ask for a better place to stay for a family at a better price. the free parking is a terrific added bonus! The Seaside restaurant around the corner had reasonably priced meals if we didn't feel like cooking. We will defiantly stay here again when we get to Waikiki!

Room Tip: Our higher floor had almost no street noise.

We stayed at the Ilima because we won a visit in a 1 bedroom suite at a silent auction. The suite was large and very comfortable. I would recommend it to young families as there was a pull out sofa in the living area and very well stocked kitchen.
There is a self serve laundry area on the 3rd floor so if you are staying more than a few days - you don't have to pack as much, just wash things out and take less luggage- or at least leave room for all the new t-shirts you are going to be buying and bring home.
Yes, its a bit dated, some nicer bedspreads would go along way to update it, and if management is reading this- the wall unit should go and the TV should just sit on the dresser so there is more room in the main living area.
The bathroom had a jetted tub and good water pressure. The toilet was a good flusher which can make or break a hotel stay for me.
Location was close to shopping and is you have rented a car you can enter and exit Waikiki from the back side instead of fighting all the traffic on the main road.
If you are interested in a good, solid , functional hotel for a fair price - leaving you more money to spend on daily activities, then The Ilima is a great choice .
