“First time stay, will go back again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

When I go to Honolulu for business, I usually like to stay on one of the edges of Waikiki to avoid the bulk of the tourist crunch. After reading reviews here on TripAdvisor I thought that I would give the Equus a try. I was happy with my decision as the hotel was very nice and well-located. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Parking was extra (I had a car for work visits) and a little tight, but worked out OK. Elevator was somewhat slow, but I have found this to be the case at multiple other properties as well. Room was cozy but not cramped and there are multiple places to eat and things to do within a short walk from the hotel. Noise was not an issue (I stayed in a room towards the back of the building, away from Ala Moana Blvd.). I thought that the Equus was a good value.

Room Tip: Per suggestions on TripAdvisor, I requested a room away from the Blvd and this worked out fine.

I have to say that we had a wonderful time at the Equus. The beds were soft. We didn't hear any street noise and the front staff was amazing. I would definitely stay at the Equus again ! The walk to Waikiki beach is a safe 15 minute walk away and there is a trolley stop about 1 block away if you are unable to walk that far. You also get free Mai Ti's every Friday and Saturday at 5 pm which is a great time to speak with other travelers on what sites they would or wouldn't recommend.

Room Tip: We were on the 6th floor and could see the Harbor and a sliver of Waikiki.

Aloha, I recently stayed at the Equus Hotel with a couple of my friends to watch the Aloha Week Parade. I can honestly say that the Equus Hotel is the perfect place for kamaʻaina to just get away for the weekend to just relax. The hotel is located at the beginning of Waikiki and is surrounded by tons of great restaurants and is in walking distance of the Ala Moana shopping center. We went to the Chart House for dinner, which is right across the street of the hotel. The staff are great and have a lot of aloha for their guests. Renee and Puka were the two fabulous staff members at the front desk, who served us with a smile. I highly recommend this hotel to guests from near and far. It is in a great location, it has a free parking, and if youʻre lucky enough, you can catch a great seat at of the many parades that occur in Waikiki.

Room Tip: Suites are wonderfully spacious. We also got a free chilled pineapple. Onolicious!

Great value on the Tripadvisor deal - however, do not get the bamboo room. 1) its only a queen, other similar rooms are king size, 2) the bamboo frame is quite low, my head is still hurting, 3) the bamboo frame takes up the room - barely enough space for bags.

Was also disappointed with the balcony - too small to sit outside, especially with the noisy AC condensor. The AC will not operate if you leave the doors open.

The location is not ideal as well and far away from the main stretch. There are few shops in the area except for the ABC supermarket.

Room Tip: Skip the bamboo room

Traminer,

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments and concerns regarding your recent visit. We are sorry to hear that you did not feel the Bamboo Queen was an upgrade, and apologize for this dissapointment. Many of our return guests love the island feel of these rooms, as the decor is much more tropical than our Classic, Deluxe or Executive rooms. We would be happy to accommodate you in another room type upon your return visit to Hawaii. Please contact us directly and we would be happy to arrange any special requests. We look forward to exceeding your expectations.

TripAdvisor reviews for this hotel were quite good and the price was excellent. They truly practice sustainability as advertised. Stayed 3 nights and enjoyed every one of them. TripAdvisor offered free upgrade to deluxe King if available. Was not available but front desk substituted discount for parking instead. Perfect location, walk to Waikiki, direct route to and from airport. Didn't hurt having Ala Moana shopping center also within 5 to 10 minutes walking distance - Gomo Tei Ramen for dinner twice, $ and delish!

Green Features: No wasteful practices here - didn't see a plastic cup or glass anywhere. Water is available in the front lobby to refill your bottle!

We stayed here for just one night. At close to the lowest price point for hotels in Honolulu, this hotel is really wonderful.

The staff is incredibly friendly - they greeted us with fresh guava juice and let us check in about 2 hours early because the room was available. The room was beautifully furnished, spotless, good Air Conditioning, nice TV, and the bed was AMAZING. King-size, pillow-top - we slept for 12 hours.

Notes: parking is not free, despite what some websites and other reviews say. I think we paid about 20 dollars for a day of on-site parking. Not expensive for a Waikiki area hotel, but we were expecting free. Also, it is about a 15-20 minute walk to Waikiki beach. a nice walk, though, through lovely outdoor shopping centers and such. Perfect for our purposes but if you're going to the beach every day, expect to walk.

LBloomberg,

Mahalo for taking the time to review your stay. We are sorry to hear that one review on TripAdvisor that mentioned free parking has caused so much disappointment. We have responded several times regarding this review, letting our travelers and guests know it is not in fact free, however is the most affordable in Waikiki at $20. It is listed on our website, as well as all other third party booking sites as paid parking. Again we apologize for this inconvenience, and we do hope that more travelers will learn from your comments.

Regarding your recent stay, we are pleased to hear it was enjoyable. Our staff strives for excellent service and individual attention to each guest. We make the effort to invite each of our guests into our Equus Ohana, and build lasting relationships by getting to know you better. It is a pleasure to hear that this was the case, and that the rooms exceeded your expectation allowing you a great rest to begin your holiday!

We apologize that we could not direct you more appropriately to closer beaches. We are actually only a 5 min walk from the very beginning of Waikiki beach (Kahanamoku beach in front of the Hilton plus lagoon). You can walk down the beach 10-15 min to get to the more central part of Waikiki beach where the Duke statue is located (and all the people!). We recommend trying Ala Moana Beach Park (only 5 min in the opposite direction across from Ala Moana Mall). This beach has a 40 acre park, as well as a vast beach front protected by reef so it is deep, and quite wonderful for lap swimming or children. There is also a great inlet that is safe for kids called Magic Island that is also located in Ala Moana Beach Park. This is the much less crowded local beach, that is preferred by those of us who reside here. We definitely recommend each of our guests visits this beach to compare to Waikiki Beach.

Thank you again for your wonderful feedback, and sharing your comments with your fellow travelers. We do hope to host you again upon your return to Waikiki.

Mahalo!

I had a wonderful trip to Waikiki this past week and a major contributing factor was my stay at the Equus. Very friendly staff greeted me as soon as I checked in, even refreshing me after a long flight from Japan with a cool glass of Lemonade. I enjoyed the texting service the hotel offers. You can text how they're doing service-wise, any trouble issues, or help on deciding where to find a good local spot. The room was outstanding, very comfortable bed. Let me re-state, very, very comfortable. Fridge and all the normal amenities included, Wi-Fi, cable television, etc. Also, the hotel is very environmentally friendly, with eco shampoo/conditioner, a system that shuts off air conditioning and lights when you remove your room key, as well as neat hotel pens made from recycled materials. The key lesson of geography is "location, location, location" and this hotel has that. It's not right on Waikiki Beach, and that's fantastic. If you want the beach, it is laughable walk of less than five minutes. Restaurants galore are nearby, both local and chain restaurants (Da Smokehouse was a personal favorite). ABC stores are a plenty in the area, including one less than 50 yards from the front of the hotel. And the best part of being tucked away off the beach, is no drunk people bothering you late at night, as well as no tourists creating loud noises that carry up to your window. The only gripe one may have is that parking is not free (though no hotel in Waikiki is), it is $20 daily for a handful of spots or $20 for overflow parking across the street. Many tourists will complain about this, but the Equus parking charges are significantly less than other hotels in Waikiki who will charge upwards to $70 daily. Overall, a great stay at the Equus in Waikiki. I highly recommend.

Green Features: -System that shuts off lights/AC when room key is removed from it. -Neat hotel pens made from recycled materials. -Shampoo/Conditioners/Body wash are all eco friendly products.
