This was our 2nd time staying at the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel Jan. 31 - Feb.10 2013
...we previously stayed 5yrs ago Feb. 2008. We enjoyed our 2nd stay just as much as the 1st & would return to this hotel again if ever back in the area. For value & location this place can't be beat. Though they do charge a daily resort/amenity fee what you get is well worth it...daily newspaper, free sign out of beach towels & beach chairs, dvds/ps3 games, Breakfast on the Beach is still excellent! In recent reviews I've read people complain about the breakfast, we were here for 10 nites and only had positives: only one day was there a longish line, but it moved very quickly & we had our food within a few minutes. Huge selection of continential items; cold cereals, cut up fruit, lots of mufffins, & pastries, 8 types of juice, pop, hot choc, good selection of teas, instant oatmeal, great selection of yougurts, asian items, 2 flavoured coffees, plus reg. & decafe. If this didn't cover your needs there is the hot items station which has omelettes every day & either french toast or waffles to buy for $3-$5. Honestly great selection, always replentished quickly...my husband can't eat wheat, so every day for $5 he bought an omelette, & was more than satisfied with fruit, yougurt & juice, milk, coffee, etc...so for those who complain about the breakfast not sure what they are acustomed to but I would say its plentiful. Its called Breakfast on The Beach, for a reason...fill cooler bag provided & take to the beach!! Don't crowd around the pool & then complain not enough chairs!! We enjoyed breaky on the beach several times..great experience, as well as some days took breaky up stairs on room balcony enjoyed the awesome view as the Hawaiian singer/music floated up to our room. Its never over powering or too loud. A couple days when breakfast area was slow we did stay by the pool to watch the hula & singer. Thx Celeste the hula dancer, for even making a traditional bracelet for our daughter! The 2 ladies who keep breakfast running smooth are awesome & friendly...as are ALL the Aston staff. Even those you just pass in the halls! All of our requests, though few were met & handled in a pleasant postive way. I just can't comprehend the things people have complained about or given negative feedback about. House keeping does a great job, in the rooms & through out all the common areas & grounds. The only time we needed to contact housekeeping was one day our maid missed leaving a bath mat, quick call & we had one in 5 min. Plenty of clean towels everyday. Rooms made up by 3 or 3:30pm at latest...people must realize this is a popular, busy hotel...rooms being checked out must be clean 1st, so new guests can check in. They say each room is inspected after being made up...yup its true I saw 1st hand housekeeper, being called back to a room to re-touch some thing the "inspector" noticed!! In a previous reveiw some one complained there's a tiny sign in bathroom saying if you remove the soaps, its a $25 charge...hello that notice is reffering to the surfboard stand the soaps are on!! as in if you like it so much ask to buy one from housekeeping for $25, don't steal it from the room!!! Great selection of soaps & tolietries too! Much more than many hotels offer these days. One day we had an early tour, 5am pick up...while most guests slept, the staff were busy scrubbing down the comon areas, pool, lobbies, washrooms, etc. We spent most of our last day hanging out by the pool, etc...since we had checked out we had to use the pool area washrooms most of the day...these were cleaned numerous times through out day....when you have several hundred people using these common areas, there will be times when you hit it & its a bit of a mess, but the staff were on top of this all the time. Great staff!! Its an older hotel...as nearly all in Waikiki...but is well maintained, while we were there a portion of the lower street level lobby flooring was replaced within a day, with minimal disruption to guests. Also this lobby is one of the BEST waiting areas I have ever seen in a hotel...abundant space & seating for those waiting for cabs, tours, or their cars. Also the way its set-up you can see right out to the street, to where your tour bus will be stopping. The valet/bell desk were AWESOME, we never had to wait long for our car, they said just call down 10 minutes before you need the car & it was always ready when we needed. They reserved us a cab & made sure it was there for our return to the airport, stored our luggage after check out, hassle free! Tiki's has great food, great staff, great views/ atmosphere, great music every nite...it only ever went to about 11 or midnight at latest & if you close your black out drapes it blocks out the music well. Most nights they only played until 10. We were on 10th floor, over pool & noise was never an issue. This is a great hotel. It looks exactly like the pictures...yes even the pool...take a look at some of the other hotels in area & some of their pools are way smaller. Parking is a premium in all of Waikiki...ALL the hotels charge for parking..even self parking, which at some is very limited. We had family stay at another hotel 2 blocks from beach, block behind Int. Market Place...they paid about the same for way less hotel, no amenities, no breakfast, no beach front, no view & not nearly as nice of a property. Nearly all rooms on Waikiki are small compared to other cities. Our Ocean view room with 2 double beds, was fine space wise for myself, husband & teen daughter. For value, location, hotel features, amenities, helpful staff, & the price you pay the Aston Waikiki Beach is hard too beat. Its great for families & those on a moderate/mid level budget. About the only thing we noticed since our last visit in 2008, the red bed coverings/ shams aren't quite as vibrant as they were 5 yrs ago...washing does that! We found this room on 10th just as comfortable as previous room on 8th. Bathroom floor tile begining to show age, but not awful & otherwise clean. No peeling paint, overall clean room, clean bedding, furniture fine & in keeping with the "hip retro" theme of 50's 60's Hawaii, as done in the 2006 renovation. Lastly the tour desks are aweome...Peggy at Pleasant Holidays was exceptional...we had booked an inter island day tour with her 2 weeks before coming. She told us to call her back when we got confirmation email, should have came within a few minutes...when we didn't call & no email was coming Peggy called us back a few times until it all was sorted out (error in email address). So we were happy to meet Peggy in person & have her book further excursions for us while in hotel. If we ever visit Honolulu again (and we will!) we will stay at the Aston Waikiki Beach again,no hesitations!
Be sure you understand difference between partial ocean view, ocean view & ocean front...We like...
