“No major issues, well worth the cost in my opinion”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

We stayed in the mountain view rooms and were very impressed. The view was much better than I expected, as the canal and quiet street were a very pleasent scene. Easy walk to the beach, and normally you'll need to buy something quick along the way anyway so it's actually nice that you have to pass some stores on your way. Parking is expensive, but that's the city not the hotel so again I can't complain that much. The room was a basic room, and had no issues with it. Good location, good hotel.

Room Tip: Go with the mountain view ... it will surprise you.

Aloha,

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. I have to agree that the mountain view rooms are a great choice with the beautiful view of the Ko'olau Mountain range. I am glad that you were able to enjoy the hotel's surrounding scenery throughout your stay. Thank you again!

What a beautiful hotel. I could not fault anything about it. Away from the hustle & bustle of the Waikiki beach but only a short walk. Very clean. Great size room, comfy bed & great views out to the mountains. Free wi-fi. The staff were fantastic - nothing was a problem. Washing machines & dryers available.

Room Tip: Recommend the king size room with mountain view

We travelled to Waikiki from NZ in July, there were 4 couples and we all enjoyed our stay in Waikiki!

The Coconut Waikiki is great value, the rooms are clean and spacious, the service is great, and the price is right. It is not a beachfront hotel, and our view wasn't exactly appealing, and the pool is small BUT if your coming to Waikiki to explore then I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Coconut Waikiki Hotel. It was perfect for us!

It’s within walking distance to the Waikiki centre but it is slightly further away than some other hotels. We are all young and didnt have any children with us so the distance wasn't an issue for us. We enjoyed that we got to walk around and explore more of the city.

If this hotel fits your budget and ticks the boxes for what you want I would happily recommend it to anyone!

Oh and I do have to mention the beds, very comfortable!

Great personal friendly service. Room spacious with very clean modern décor. Front desk and concierge very helpful. Disappointed at first as no continental breakfast as booked but 24 hr tea and coffee and everything else made up for it. Would definitely stay again. Loved it. Far better than big impersonal hotels.

Room Tip: We had a city view room with balcony which was spacious and included fridge and microwave. Lovely mo...

Great location (walk to beach, restaurants).
Low price (got AAA discount online, was cheaper than Travelocity/Expedia).
Free wifi in rooms.
Can find street parking on the canal or the streets parallel.
The diamond head king room had a little kitchenette with fridge, microwave, sink.
They have free beach towels to use at the desk.
They have washing machines and dryers in the basement ($2to wash and $2 to dry and they sell detergent for $1).
There's coffee and iced tea in the lobby at all times.

***but no breakfast anymore***

Room Tip: Got a mountain view king room on their website with AAA discount for cheaper than Travelocity/Expedi...

We just completed our second and third stay at the Coconut Waikiki. The first was under the Best Western (BWP) banner and the other two under JDV.

When we made the reservations for our most recent stays, the hotel was a BWP property and we were a little concerned when we learned the hotel had changed ownership. We weren’t familiar with the JDV brand, but decided to keep our reservations and give them a try. Within minutes of arriving at the hotel, we knew we had made the correct decision as the gentleman at the front desk was pleasant and courteous. After some 26 hours of travel, all we really wanted was to get to our room and he had us checked in, in no time.

I am little surprised at an earlier review that suggested the hotel was in a somewhat shady area. We walked the streets many times after dark and never once felt threatened. Is this the quietest property you’ll ever stay at?, probably not, but if you choose to take a mountain view room, the view off the balcony at dusk and dawn is spectacular.

For the thirteen nights in total that we stayed at the Coconut Waikiki, the entire staff from the front desk to the unsung heroes (housekeeping) of the hotel industry, were absolutely perfect. I usually resist in naming specific individuals less it detracts from the total team effort, but I would like to thank Daniel, Lheo, Pete and Mike for their roles in our wonderful vacation in Hawaii.

We plan on returning to Hawaii in 2015 and just for fun we checked out some other hotels in Waikiki. While all of the properties were very nice, their lobbies reminded me of an assembly line that lacked the personal touch that the Coconut Waikiki offers.

Bottom line, we have already decided where we’ll be staying on our next visit.

To the entire staff at the Coconut Waikiki, Maholo!

Room Tip: Book directly with the hotel.

Aloha,

Thank you for your review and your decision to keep your reservation with us under our new brand, Joie de Vivre. With our change of brand, we were blessed that all of our staff members decided to continue working with us. Thank you for recognizing everyone in both housekeeping and the front desk. It is so wonderful to hear that there were several members of our staff whom stood out and had such a great impact on your stay.

Being that we are a small boutique property, we have the opportunity to have more one on one interactions with our guests. We are happy to welcome them to be part of our Ohana.

Thank you again for your kind words and we look forward to seeing you in 2015!

Mahalo,
Daniel Floren

We stayed here for 4 nights for a friend's destination wedding. Since hotels are pretty expensive in the area, the positive reviews of this hotel on Trip Advisor convinced us to stay here. In hindsight, we wish we opted to pay a little more and stayed at a nicer hotel. Overall, we were surprised that this hotel is very dated and old. The hotel is clean and the staff is very friendly and courteous, but we would not stay here again.

Negative aspects and why we would not stay here again:
- Rooms and bathroom too small: My husband and I stayed in a Queen room and it was way too small. It was hard for us to have walking space with our 2 small/medium luggage. The bathroom was tiny.
- Hot room: Honolulu is hot during the summer, and the window A/C is how you cool the room. The window A/C was old and was running 24/7 and still only cooled a portion of the room. The A/C was too old. From an environmental perspective, I felt bad that we left the A/C blasting in the room when away, but if we turned it off, the room would turn into a hot oven. Our room seemed to feel hotter than the hotel hallway.
- Somewhat shady location: While the hotel is a convenient walk from the main Waikiki streets, we saw a number of vagrants in the area. Didn't expect that. We didn't feel super unsafe, but it was questionable.
- Lighting in the room wasn't great.
- We also could not get natural light into the room without having those people staying in the shady hotel across the street having a direct view inside our room. We needed to have our blackout curtains closed the entire time we stayed.
- 1 tiny tiny trash can for the room in the bathroom; not enough. Our garbage was spilling over.
- The safe is in an odd location that was a nightmare to get to and remove things in and out. It's also dated (key style rather than security code), so we needed to carry the safe key with us. It was hard to get stuff out and I ended up shattering my tablet screen when it fell from the safe.

A few positives about the hotel:
- Fridge in the room
- Courteous staff
- Comfortable bed
- Close walk to main Waikiki attractions

Aloha,

Thank you so much for taking the time to give us some feedback regarding your stay. We're happy your travels brought you to Hawaii and our hotel!

I am terribly sorry to learn of some of the aspects that affected your experience with us. Based on your description, the room you and your husband stayed in was our City View Queen room. While this is our smallest room type, we do feel it is a great option for travelers needing only basic accommodation. However, we do offer quite a few more options in terms of size of room and bedding. Perhaps you may have been more comfortable in our Mountain View King room.

It is true that Honolulu is very hot during the summer. However, regardless of this fact, the A/C should be cooling the room. We keep a progressive A/C maintenance program in place to prevent this sort of thing from happening. I'll investigate further and make sure the problem is corrected.

We will be installing new sheer curtains in addition to the blackout curtains that will give the option of getting more natural light into the room without sacrificing privacy. There is also a plan in place to update our safes to a more modern standard (security code instead of key).

Additionally, we really appreciate that you also took time to highlight some of the positive experiences you enjoyed while staying at the hotel. Our staff take great pride in their work and the hotel and will be happy see the comments.

Mahalo once again for taking the time to share your experience with us!
