“Wonderful place to stay!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

This Hotel was everything that we expected it to be, and more! We travelled to Honolulu over the Christmas holidays. We booked this hotel based on very positive reviews and also the price for our stay! The complimentaty breakfast also came in handy as well. (Unfortunately waffles aren't served anymore but it really wasn't a huge loss!) We loved the staff there, they were incredibly accomodating to our needs. We stayed on the 9th floor in room 902. It was awesome! It was considered a city view but to our left off of the lanai we could clearly see the ocean and to our right we could see the Ala Wai Canal. It was so perfect. Ala Wai Blvd is a fairly busy street but the noise wasn't a problem at all for us because of being on the 9th floor. Clayton at the concierge desk in the lobby was wonderful. Set us up for snorkling at Hanauma Bay which was a highlight of our trip and a must do for everyone! All in all, this hotel was suited very well for our needs and it's only a short walk to the beach and an even shorter walk to the main streets in Waikiki!

A recent change of ownership from Best Western to Joie de Vivre means that service and amenities are no longer what we expected. When we reserved our room (under the Best Western name) we were assured a typical Best Western breakfast - waffles, eggs, toast, cereal. Sadly, what we got was nothing like that. We were offered cold hard-boiled eggs, that were dark green on the inside, small limp pastries, and toast along with juice and two types of fresh fruit. If you didn't arrive early enough, there was nothing left. Although breakfast was supposed to be on until 9:30, if you were not there by at least 8:45 the only thing left was toast. I brought my own cereal and there was not even milk. My husband was told that since the breakfast was provided completely free of charge (must be the only philanthropic hotel chain in the world) the hotel was under no obligation and it was in fact the other guests' fault for taking too much, not the hotel which had under-provided. This happened twice in a row. Staff were not helpful at all. This is not how to acquire repeat customers! Rooms are clean but tired.

Hotel is well situated. Not far from main street and beach.
Staff is nice but not at the standard of 5 stars hotel. Some training should be done to improve this aspect.
They have upgraded us to the Penthouse without asking. Which is very nice and was greatly appreciated.

Chose this hotel as it seemed well located and reasonaby priced for a short stop to break up our trip back to Australia from USA. Our room was on the top floor and was extremely tiny and cramped. Yes it did have air conditioning but it was so noisy there was no possibility of sleep. It was located in the window right next to the pillow on the bed. We opted eventually to open the balcony door but the night was so noisy and so hot the possibility of any sleep was minimal. Breakfast was average. I would not recommend to others based on our experience.

We stayed here for 10 nights over christmas and new year. Check in was fast and efficient & the staff were very friendly. Our first room, #602 was a very small double - when there were 2 people in the room + suitcases, it was impossible to move around. We went to reception to ask to change rooms. The receptionist was very accomodating, especially with it being holiday season and managed to find us a room available but it meant moving in 2 days, this was fine and they even discounted the 'upgrade' fee because we were on honeymoon. When we finally moved into room 803 it was fantastic - a lot more room, better facilities and clean & tidy. The bathroom was clean and decent facilities too. Breakfast was a bit of a let down - our first few days it started with a hot breakfast (bacon, eggs, waffles, pastries, fruit), then it downgraded to waffles, pastries then towards the end of our stay it was bread, cereal and fruit - but we werent bothered as we ate out anyway. The location is very good, about 5 minute walk from 'luxury row' and a variety of restaurants and shops. About 10 mins from Waikiki beach.

The concierge was very helpful and knowledgeable and organised our trips with little fuss.

Overall, a great stay and couldnt complain.

Room Tip: Try & pay for a bigger room as the 'small doubles' are very small!!

The hotel is decent, but only that. From previous reviews we had higher expectations. Rooms are small. Tight, but efficient- for 2 people ok; for a family, not much space for anything. Kitchen is a fridge and some plates and small micro. Rooms have been redone, but are not being maintained. The carpet is already filthy and while searching for a lost ipod, we discovered quite a bit of others peoples trash left under the bed. House keeping does not do a thorough job. The decor looks nice, but is cheap - IE the toilet roll and towel ring kept falling off the wall. The deluxe breakfast is anything but deluxe. A few stale rolls, some toast, one or two selects of cut up fruit and cereal. Oh yeah, there were a few undercooked boiled eggs. If they run out, that's it. No re-supply available. So if that's your idea of a deluxe breakfast and you're early out, then this is for you. If not, plan on eating out. Staff is very friendly. Views - there are none, unless you like looking at stuff stacked on condo balconies, but we don;t spend much time in the room, so that didn't bother us. It did others in the party. Beds: soft, but plan on rolling into the middle. Again, I think the renovations were done pretty inexpensively, including mattresses. Linens are torn but clean. All in all, if you need a relatively cheap place to stay in Waikiki, and don't mind walking, and aren't bothered by the items above this is a good place to stay. If not, look elsewhere. Also, don't expect much help from the concierge. He's very nice, but mostly made us worried that our stuff would get stolen anywhere we went, including our room. Of course, that might have been legit, but it also made him recommend charters for everything. Good food recommendations though.

Room Tip: Room sizes and views vary greatly! Ask for details, and get it in writing about the room you are ass...

We only stayed for one night during a layover but our experience was wonderful. After a long flight to Honolulu we were greeted by the the front desk staff in such a welcoming manner. The room was clean and very comfortable. Our view from the balcony was not the greatest but it was still a nice place to enjoy our morning coffee.

We went for breakfast early in the morning and there was a lot to choose from; fresh fruit, cereal, scrambled eggs, toast, muffins, to making your own pancakes. It was good. We had no complaints whatsoever.

Although, we did not get a chance to use the pool, we did notice how nice it looked. If we had more time, we would have taken a dip for sure!

Since we had some time to spare before our next flight, we took a walk to Waikiki Beach. The hotel is in a nice location. Away from the hustle bustle of Waikiki but so close to all the shops and beaches etc. There is also a really nice path to walk/run just outside of the hotel with gorgeous views.

When we got back to the hotel to arrange a taxi to the Airport, the staff at the front desk were extremely helpful. They arranged our taxi and even helped us coordinate our time to ensure we got to the airport when we needed. Had it not been for them, I'm sure we would have been late as we had no idea how bad traffic could get in Honolulu.

Overall, we found the Coconut Waikiki to be a very friendly and comforting place to stay. If we ever find our way back to Honolulu, I'm sure we'd stay again.

Recommend.
