“Good location and clean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2013 via mobile

Hotel is well situated. Not far from main street and beach.
Staff is nice but not at the standard of 5 stars hotel. Some training should be done to improve this aspect.
They have upgraded us to the Penthouse without asking. Which is very nice and was greatly appreciated.

Chose this hotel as it seemed well located and reasonaby priced for a short stop to break up our trip back to Australia from USA. Our room was on the top floor and was extremely tiny and cramped. Yes it did have air conditioning but it was so noisy there was no possibility of sleep. It was located in the window right next to the pillow on the bed. We opted eventually to open the balcony door but the night was so noisy and so hot the possibility of any sleep was minimal. Breakfast was average. I would not recommend to others based on our experience.

We stayed here for 10 nights over christmas and new year. Check in was fast and efficient & the staff were very friendly. Our first room, #602 was a very small double - when there were 2 people in the room + suitcases, it was impossible to move around. We went to reception to ask to change rooms. The receptionist was very accomodating, especially with it being holiday season and managed to find us a room available but it meant moving in 2 days, this was fine and they even discounted the 'upgrade' fee because we were on honeymoon. When we finally moved into room 803 it was fantastic - a lot more room, better facilities and clean & tidy. The bathroom was clean and decent facilities too. Breakfast was a bit of a let down - our first few days it started with a hot breakfast (bacon, eggs, waffles, pastries, fruit), then it downgraded to waffles, pastries then towards the end of our stay it was bread, cereal and fruit - but we werent bothered as we ate out anyway. The location is very good, about 5 minute walk from 'luxury row' and a variety of restaurants and shops. About 10 mins from Waikiki beach.

The concierge was very helpful and knowledgeable and organised our trips with little fuss.

Overall, a great stay and couldnt complain.

Room Tip: Try & pay for a bigger room as the 'small doubles' are very small!!

The hotel is decent, but only that. From previous reviews we had higher expectations. Rooms are small. Tight, but efficient- for 2 people ok; for a family, not much space for anything. Kitchen is a fridge and some plates and small micro. Rooms have been redone, but are not being maintained. The carpet is already filthy and while searching for a lost ipod, we discovered quite a bit of others peoples trash left under the bed. House keeping does not do a thorough job. The decor looks nice, but is cheap - IE the toilet roll and towel ring kept falling off the wall. The deluxe breakfast is anything but deluxe. A few stale rolls, some toast, one or two selects of cut up fruit and cereal. Oh yeah, there were a few undercooked boiled eggs. If they run out, that's it. No re-supply available. So if that's your idea of a deluxe breakfast and you're early out, then this is for you. If not, plan on eating out. Staff is very friendly. Views - there are none, unless you like looking at stuff stacked on condo balconies, but we don;t spend much time in the room, so that didn't bother us. It did others in the party. Beds: soft, but plan on rolling into the middle. Again, I think the renovations were done pretty inexpensively, including mattresses. Linens are torn but clean. All in all, if you need a relatively cheap place to stay in Waikiki, and don't mind walking, and aren't bothered by the items above this is a good place to stay. If not, look elsewhere. Also, don't expect much help from the concierge. He's very nice, but mostly made us worried that our stuff would get stolen anywhere we went, including our room. Of course, that might have been legit, but it also made him recommend charters for everything. Good food recommendations though.

Room Tip: Room sizes and views vary greatly! Ask for details, and get it in writing about the room you are ass...

We only stayed for one night during a layover but our experience was wonderful. After a long flight to Honolulu we were greeted by the the front desk staff in such a welcoming manner. The room was clean and very comfortable. Our view from the balcony was not the greatest but it was still a nice place to enjoy our morning coffee.

We went for breakfast early in the morning and there was a lot to choose from; fresh fruit, cereal, scrambled eggs, toast, muffins, to making your own pancakes. It was good. We had no complaints whatsoever.

Although, we did not get a chance to use the pool, we did notice how nice it looked. If we had more time, we would have taken a dip for sure!

Since we had some time to spare before our next flight, we took a walk to Waikiki Beach. The hotel is in a nice location. Away from the hustle bustle of Waikiki but so close to all the shops and beaches etc. There is also a really nice path to walk/run just outside of the hotel with gorgeous views.

When we got back to the hotel to arrange a taxi to the Airport, the staff at the front desk were extremely helpful. They arranged our taxi and even helped us coordinate our time to ensure we got to the airport when we needed. Had it not been for them, I'm sure we would have been late as we had no idea how bad traffic could get in Honolulu.

Overall, we found the Coconut Waikiki to be a very friendly and comforting place to stay. If we ever find our way back to Honolulu, I'm sure we'd stay again.

Recommend.

The Coconut in Honolulu is an older hotel but recently renovated. The location is good for the price and within walking distance of everything in Waikiki. Everything was in working condition and we really had nothing to complain about in our room (except that we had a view of other buildings but we were hardly ever there so it didn't bother us. There's a great little Thai restaurant about a block down the street but don't be fooled by the "free breakfast"!

In my opinion it was less than mediocre but you decide for yourself - here is everything that was offered: All Bran, Fuit loops, full milk (they were out of skim), white bread, 3 croissants and 2 small muffins (seriously), sliced pineapple and orange, coffee and juice.

I called 2 days before our arrival and spoke to Raoul who wasn't friendly at all and Jerome who helped us on check-in was the same. The rest of the staff was very friendly as most people in Hawaii are

On its website the hotel looked clean and had relatively positive reviews on TripAdvisor . I didn't have high expectation due to some negative feedback shared by fellow travelers and the manager’s subsequent lukewarm and defensive comments. I should have paid more attention to the lack of care in the hotel’s responses. I hope the other travellers reading this review would think twice when booking this hotel.

I stayed here for 5 nights. After the first night, I had to change to another room as the noise level of the mountain view room was unbearable. It was like sleeping on the street, absolutely no sound insulation. I was then given a City view room that which was a level lower than my original Mountain view room. Judging from the stained carpet and unsightly view of the neighboring building, it was obvious that I was downgraded. What struck me though was that there was absolutely no apology and sympathy offered by the hotel staff. When I then approached the manager with a refund request (for the difference between two types of rooms), I experienced the same very non- committal response that fellow travelers describe in previous reviews. Apparently the hotel could not do anything about it. Since it was “my” choice to move to another room in order to get a decent night’s sleep, it was not the hotel’s fault. The difference in price was at around $70 and I was fine not getting any refund. It is small money. What bothered me though was their very uncaring attitude towards their guests’ satisfaction level. They couldn’t care less.

I read the manger’s response to ‘sheets not changed’ in a previous review below. It was explained away by invoking the popular “effort to be environmentally sustainable”. I find that odd because practically everything on offer at breakfast was plastic and every plate and cup went straight to the garbage bin at the breakfast tables. I saw very little effort made for sustainability around the hotel.

There are problems in running any business but a caring business with integrity should be a lot more proactive and genuine when addressing their customers’ concerns. I’m afraid this hotel does not excel in the “care” category.

Aloha Hawk-Linda,

Thank you for sharing your experience with us. It is most unfortunate to hear you did not experience the high level of service we are known for.

Due to our location and the nature of Waikiki, noise is unavoidable. Everyone's experience with noise differs due to what they experience at home. It's unfortunate that it was louder than what you are used to. I am happy to hear we were able to accomodate your request to move to a quieter room. There are many factors to take into account when it comes to refunding a reservation. If you'd like to give us a call we can discuss the nature of your reservation and how it was booked.

Our hotel is making positive changes to assist with the environment. We do not use plastic dishes and silverware at breakfast. We use reusable plates, bowls, and silverware every day. I apologize if you thought our dishes were disposable, but guests do not throw them away. When guests are finished we have a dish bin provided so that we may wash them. The only disposables are the cups but we do provide glass and ceramic cups in each guest room. We use paper cups instead of foam to assist with our goal in saving the environment. I hope this helps to clear up any confusion about our environmentally friendly sheet change program.

We truly care about our guests and their experience. It is unfortunate that these issues overshadowed the service we are known for. If you have any other questions or concerns please feel free to contact us directly.
