“Location & View”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

Our apartment on the 10th floor was a Deluxe studio and suited my husband & I perfectly. We liked the in-room laundry and the perfect ocean & park view from our balcony where we ate every meal sitting and enjoying the sunsets, fireworks and continuous activities around us. The bus stop outside the apartments is ideal and being right on the beachfront was magical. The only inconvenience was not having a front desk.

Thank you for your kind remarks. We are a beachfront property, centrally located to all restaurants and shops in Waikiki and a five minute bus ride to the Ala Moana Shopping Center. All units have a washer/dryer and full kitchen for your convenience. Fireworks are now two times a week - Tuesdays and Fridays. Mahalo for your recommendation.

We have just returned home from our second stay at Outrigger Waikiki Shore. This time we stayed for just short of two weeks.

We had a two bedroomed apartment on the 15th Floor/Penthouse level, Room PH10. The apartment is very open plan and both bedrooms open to the living area, but can be closed off by sliding doors. There were 3 adults and two children in our party and the apartment size met our needs. It has a full kitchen, a washer and a dryer and some fantastic views, particularly of the Hilton's Friday night fireworks. Outrigger guests have full access to the amenities next door at Outrigger Reef, the location is perfect for us.

The kitchen and bathroom are a little dated, but they are clean and we found everything to be in working order.

The only two issues for us, were there was a lack of kitchen wear, such as baking dishes etc and the airconditioning units in this apartment really need upgrading. One did not seem to work on the cool setting at all, the other two were quite noisy when in use.

We would visit again.

Room Tip: For best views ask for a room on the eighth floor or higher.

We got the 1 bedroom ocean view apartment and it was amazing!

Fantastic views of waikiki, plus a big spacious apartment that you could eat, cook, do washing in. It was perfect. I will definately be coming back here to stay for longer next time!

Yes you dont get the service like a normal hotel - but this isnt a normal hotel. We still used all the amenities of the Outrigger next door, which you are allowed to do.

Great place to stay and so close to everything :)

We stayed at the Waikiki Shore and booked through Outrigger -- at time of booking, their prices were better than Castle, plus we had access to the pool at the Reef next door.

Pros:
Fantastic location - right on the beach next to Fort DeRussy park
Secure underground garage parking (if you can get it - see Cons)
Spacious rooms
Spectacular views
Large balcony
In-room laundry & kitchen
Use of the Reef pool & towels (next door)

Cons:
Noisy (jalousie windows did not close completely & were next to the bed)
Cumbersome check-in process (see below)
Parking not always available; very tight spaces
Dated rooms; minimal kitchen supplies

When booking through Outrigger, the check-in and check-out process is cumbersome, as there is no front desk for Outrigger guests. At time of booking, we were told we could go next door to the Reef to check in, but that process changed prior to our arrival. Instead, an employee walks over from Outrigger Regency. Despite calling ahead as requested, there was no one waiting for us at Shore when we arrived. So, we had to call again and wait. When he arrived, he showed us our room and completed the check-in process in our room. There were no parking spaces available when we arrived, so we had to park at the Regency (a short walk). Fortunately, a garage space did open up the next day and we were able to park in the Shore garage for the rest of our stay. Parking spaces are assigned and you are given a remote to open the garage door. We had to go to the Regency to check out and return the remote.

To be truthful, I am torn on whether I would return to Waikiki Shore. I was traveling with kids, so the pros were all important to me for this trip, and I was able to live with the cons. However, if I was traveling with just my spouse, and/or did not feel the need for laundry, kitchen or separate sleeping & living areas, I would stay elsewhere despite the great location.

Room Tip: Consider booking through VRBO -- you can rent from a private owner or through Outrigger or Castle.

We have previously stayed at the Waikiki Shore through VRBO and we were really impressed. For out latest trip to Waikiki, we elected to go through the Outrigger so as to get access to their pool and facilities (or so we thought) as we were travelling there with our nearly 5 year old.

The location is great, close to everything. Our apartment was SO 1970. It was so old and aged so badly, it was like stepping back in time. The kitchen was really old. It had some mugs that I am sure my grandma had in the early 1980's, and it was serviceable but UGLY. Maybe I was feeling the effects of coming from an amazing apartment in Maui, but this place needed a serious makeover.

For a family friendly condo, it wasn't that family friendly. Here's why.

We booked a one bedroom - yes, in retrospect we should have booked a 2 bedroom, but the one bedroom was impossible to make completely dark. The blinds (hideous vertical ones made out of plastic - and practically impossible to open or shut) don't block out the light completely, ever. If you're travelling with young kids who wake up at first light, this is a big thumbs down from me. The door between the living area and bedroom was a louvred concertina door, which didn't meet the wall exactly so the light and noise from the living area went straight through to the bedroom. The lighting from the communal corridors also streams into your apartment as there are no curtains, so there is never a moment when your room is in complete darkness.

We were on the 5th floor, which was great. We have been higher up previously and the 5th floor was just as good and provides a great view of the fireworks. The doors to the lanai don't really have a child proof lock. Call me paranoid, but it doesn't really take a smart kid to work out the slide lock and get out onto that balcony in 2 seconds should they wish. Similarly with the door to the apartment, there is one handle that doesn't really take that much effort to open, and no other lock that you can use even when you're inside the apartment to make sure that no one gets in, or no one gets out.

The pool, while pleasant, doesn't have an area where kids can paddle by themselves. So if you are travelling with a non-swimming child, there is no area where you can watch them play in shallow water while having a drink or a lie on a sun lounge. And, here's the catch - even if you book through Outrigger, you have to check in down the street, and you can't charge ANYTHING to your room when you have a drink or snack by the pool, which is just plain inconvenient. As is not being able to access Room Service.

We booked through Outrigger so we would have access to the pool, but to be honest any Tom, Dick or Harry could have walked in and got towels. We didn't have to show any proof that we were staying next door.

Having a washer and dryer is great, as is having a kitchen. But the crockery was filthy dirty and I've got to say the housekeeping (new sheets every 3rd day, and a cursory bin empty every day) left a lot to be desired.

So, would we stay at the Waikiki Shore again? In a heart beat. But through Outrigger? Probably not worth the extra expense.

And if you're travelling with young kids who wake up at first light, check first to see if there are proper blinds or curtains rather than the poor excuse for vertical blinds.

Three families stayed here the first week of August, 2013. We were pleasantly surprised with the spaciousness of our separate condos, but there was a wide range of furnishings. One condo had been completely renovated and it was beautiful. One had newer furniture but original layout. Our condo seemed to be all original and it was a little dreary. The location was great and the staff very helpful.

Aloha
Thank you for your evaluation of the Waikiki Shore.
Thank you for recognizing our employees. They are great people-cordial and friendly.
We are constantly upgrading and renovating our condos.
The individual condominium owners have been very supportive in doing these upgrades.
I agree the location is great and in close proximity to shops and restaurants.

We were 4 people in the condo and it was a great accomodation with plenty of space! Wonderful view over the beaches, Fort DeRussy Beach Park and the city of Honolulu. We were very pleased that the aircondition worked well!
I think the owner should spend a few dollars to clean the sofa and carpets, but everything else was OK. I booked our stay by Outrigger, and both the check-in and check-out went well and easy. I will not hesitate to book another stay at Waikiki Shore!
