“Great Location for Honolulu Marathon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2014 via mobile

I stayed here the night before the Honolulu Marathon. The location was great. I was able to walk to the zoo to catch a shuttle to the start line. It is an easy walk to the zoo and aquarium. The room was basic and clean. Nothing fancy but a good location.

I love this place! The location is perfect with the beach, park, and Waikiki and Diamond Head right there, yet just enough removed. Though it may not be the most shining and up-to date, this place emanates a feeling of Aloha and the Hawaii that I know and love that is disappearing as things update and modernize. The staff is excellent and genuinely friendly and kind, the food and service wonderful. I don't want to stay anywhere else when visiting Oahu!

This New Otani is beautifully located nearby Diamond Head at the end of Waikiki beach, the beach itself is very nice. Sadly, the room's condition was poor: a whole in the carpet, old and dusty curtains, squeaky bed, old linens, etc. The service at the front counter was not very attentive and the wait staff at their Japanese restaurant was borderline arrogant, however, the bell staff was pleasant and welcoming. This was an unpleasant surprise to me as I've stayed numerous times at New Otani hotels in both Japan and the mainland U.S. and the service and condition of their hotels have been impeccable. The price we paid was reasonable but we would not return to this hotel unless it is refurbished/updated and management retrains its staff on how to be polite and attentive to its guests.

I must say that I was a little worried because the reviews for this place were mixed. I loved this place. It is away from the craziness of Waikiki, but close enough to be part of it if you wish. All of the employees were very happy and friendly. I mean very happy and engaging for conversation with local tips. I was even invited to go diving. The rooms are dated but clean and has an evening turn down service from the old days that is just charming. The food at the Hau Tree is very good, however a little $$, for every night. Take a 10 minute walk to the Barefoot Cafe for a great dinner. The beach could not be closer or nicer. The only complaint I have is anyone with a tattoo must cover up all signs of a tattoo. Most look like they are burn victims with their arms and legs wrapped up in bandages. This is so silly since this is where tattoos came from hundreds of years ago. Please change that policy, please

Room Tip: Get a Jr suite

This is an older building that has been done up recently, the rooms were clean and tidy and many have great views across Waikiki Beach.
I found it much better to be away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Waikiki, but still a short walk into town.
the hotel also fronts directly onto the beach so it was a great place for a morning / evening swim.

Room Tip: Get one with a view it's worth it !.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2014

I stayed here for four nights while celebrating a relative's 90th birthday. The location is ideal for access to Waikiki beaches, shopping, and walking around Diamond Head. I quickly learned to park my car on the street. Using the valet parking was very, very pricey and since I wasn't around the hotel during the day, I could easily find parking after 6 PM and was gone before 10AM. My room was spacious, the bed was comfortable, the linens had a nice feel to them and I could regulate the AC. I chose a room facing Diamond Head. Since I wasn't in the room very much, I didn't feel like paying an up charge to see the ocean and Diamond Head is gorgeous in the morning with the sun coming up behind it.
But it was some little things that weren't quite right. There were tiles that had fallen off the baseboard in the tub area and the wallpaper was also beginning to peel. The drawers and doors in the dresser were askew. I wondered about the quality of the maintenance. The management did say they were renovating the floor above, so I hope the small lapses in maintenance were in advance of renovating the floor I was on.
I'd definitely recommend this hotel to others.
