“Oh my!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

Side street inn is worth the small hike from waikiki. The food was unreal - get the special fries rice and the garlic chixken for sure. Amazing. Peanut butter crunch for dessert.

“Hawaiian Comfort”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013 via mobile

Do not go for the ambience. Yes, this restaurant has character, but it is a dive. This Hawaiian comfort food, however, is several notches above the BBQ plate lunch so readily available around town. It is also a local hangout for a lot of people.

A colleague (new to the island but now living on Oahu) and I ate here and we were both quite happy with the food. We walked away with leftovers.

The Kal Bi is market priced and is an outstanding dish. The bits of char add nice texture to the cut up pieces of short ribs and the brushed on sauce marries oh so well with the smoke flavors: dynamite!

The sliced teriyaki steak was a bit overdone for me. The fried rice, full of all sorts of interesting ingredients, is excellent and would be in the running for best fried rice in Honolulu.

The Lilikoi creme brûlée was excellent. The hint of tropical flavor was a welcome departure from the typical creme brûlée. On a warm evening, this would make an excellent dessert.

Our server started off the evening seemingly annoyed at having to explain dishes on the menu. Her attitude and demeanor improved considerably as the evening progressed, probably figuring at least one of us (moi) wasn't a local.

I would rate this place a bit higher if it had ambience. Go for the food. I would again.

“What a great find!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

Thank you TripAdvisor reviewers! Thanks to you we found this great little local place while just driving around town exploring. We had the escargot, house ahi and house fried rice. The food tasted excellent, the portions were very generous and the staff is so friendly and welcoming. I'm so glad we used the search feature of our TA app!!!

“Come hungry!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

This was recommended by a taxi driver heading to our hotel in Waikiki. There are two locations, but we went to the nearest and oldest one. If you care about food more than atmosphere, this is the place to go. Everything was delicious, from the short ribs and crispy pork to the barbeque ribs. The waitress was sweet and efficient. We were only sorry we couldn't get back there a second time, but we had to leave for another island. Put this one on your "must eat at" restaurant list!

“Excellent Local Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2013

This place is hard to find, and it's location in a small alley-like street. The out side is pretty run down, and the inside is not much better. But forget all that, because the food is simply great. This is the place all the locals know about; the food is served family style in large portions. It is a good blend of Hawaiian-Chinese food, without falling into the trap of putting pineapple into everything.

Take the time to visit this place if you are in the area of the Ala Moana Mall.
