My wife and I have always enjoyed their sister restaurant in Boston, so we had to stop here to try it out. We were not disappointed.
Yes, the ambiance is over the top, but that's half the fun. Lots of colorful posters on the walls, and you can get a tour through the kitchen on your way to your table that's a hoot. It can make it a little difficult to find your way out after a big bottle of wine, though, since you can't leave the way you came in! Waitstaff is great in giving directions, asking things like, "Did you see the Pope's hat in a room you went past?".
Our waiter was right out of the 50's in his demeanor, sitting on our table as he described his recommendations that night at the "da Booc". We're inveterate peolpe-watchers, and this place did not disappoint here either. On one side, there was a large oriental family celebrating a birthday. A little further down the room was a family of four out of the 70's, and everything in between.
The food was very good, Italian-spicy without relying solely on garlic to give it a punch. Since we were staying at a condo, we made good use of our waiter's admonition that "the portions are huge" to get a second meal heated up the next evening in the condo.
If you're anywhere near the Ward Center in Honolulu want good Italian food and a good time, make sure you give this place the opportunity to entertain you. You won't be disappointed!
