“A superb experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2014 via mobile

My husband was born & raised in Honolulu & we go back to visit regularly but somehow we had missed this gem. He is a short rib aficionado & he ranked these as the best he's ever eaten by far. Tender, flavorful & well presented. We had the most fun with "Da Bag", an appetizer that is served in what looks like an old jiffy pop container. Delicious. We will definitely return. The wait staff was attentive & efficient. A+ in every way.

“Close to perfection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2014

It's been two years since my last meal at Alan Wong's and I was not disappointed at all. While some may criticize for price and or have written about slow service none of which I have ever encountered in all the years that I have been coming here, never.

The fact is the service is only surpassed by the food which is hand crafted and served with pride, Hawaiian style !

I do recommend the chief's selection with wine paring if this is your first time, it's a home run.

Enjoy !

“Be aware you are in Hawaii restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2014

We've been coming to Hawaii so many times and we always go to Cafe Milo ( hoe in the wall ) for French restaurant. We heard so much good things about Allan Wong and we've decided to try it this time. We saw a menu online before going to the restaurant and it was wonderful. I read some of the reviews and they were either 5 star on single star. Most of single star complained about the service. One review said they had reservation, but had to wait 40 minutes before waiter came to get an order. So it's a popular busy place and this person just had a bad luck. We, at least I had expectation of slow service. Sure enough, we had to wait 10 min, to seat and another 10 min. before waiter came to take orders and that wasn't too bad based on the initial expectation. Our waiter was well trained and seem to know the complicated menus. We decided to order the chef's sample menus with wine paring. My over all review of this restaurant is "over rated". The four gras was very sweet and it was paired with even sweeter desert wine.( definitely not our taste) Meat was cooked perfect on the temperature, but accompanied by very sweet sauce. The Chef has very high skills, but when we read her profile, she joined Allan Wong as prep cook and move on to her current position. She had no out side of Allan Wong experience. For us coming from California, the food was definetely on the sweet side. All the critics and reviews they received was over rated for the price they are charging. You must know that you are dining in Hawaii (everything seeme to have sweet fruity flavore). We had a good time at the restaurant, but we will not be coming back to this restaurant. If you like Roy's ( we don't ), you may like this restaurant even better.

“Average to above average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2014

Maybe we didn't order the right apps and entrees but the food was downright average. Had the poke pine, lobster dashi, short ribs and a ribeye with foie gras and it was just okay. Appetizers were very good. The French rolls were awesome with the aioli and our waiter was very nice. It took about an hour between eating our appetizers and receiving our entrees. It may be that it just depends on your ideal of fine dining. We seem to be more adventurous or into fusion and this missed the mark. Ate at Morimoto's a few days before and that felt more adventurous and flavorful. I guess you can't win them all.
