5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 21, 2012 via mobile

I was there for 3 days and I shared a room with my boyfriend and it was good. Good kitchen, nice stuff and fair prices! You can buy eggs and rent some other stuff like movies, books etc.

People who hanged around seemed nice too.

Waikiki isn't so nice...very busy and crowed. Good for party, not more!

I noticed no bed bugs during my four night stay at this hostel from August 4th to the 8th. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The rooms and baths are clean. (I did notice a small ant issue but a friend told me that ants were simply impossible to avoid in hawaii.) There are a variety of things you can borrow including such items as hairdryers and beach supplies. The location cannot be beat, it's right near the heart of Waikiki and only a minute from a bus stop with buses that take you to every major attraction on the island.

The surrounding area is noisy as it is in downtown Waikiki, which frankly never sleeps and the mattresses could be better, but all in all a very pleasent hostel experience.

Room Tip: Get rooms toward the front of the hostel, it's a little quieter at night.

The Seaside does have a problem with bed bugs but pests in general is probably more accurate. I noticed bites as well but was more put off by all the cockroaches which seem to circle the place at night (they are probably drawn by the outdoor/open kitchen and people eating in the courtyard). On the plus side the hostel does offer sturdy bed frames, comfy mattresses, individual lockers and privacy curtains for the dorm beds. And their rates are pretty reasonable, too. Also, the location puts you smack in the middle of Waikiki right behind the main street. . . but that can be a plus or a minus depending on your preferences. You are in a central spot and close to beaches and nightlife but there is a ridiculous amount of noise coming from the traffic, pedestrians and bar patrons behind the hostel. And it doesn't help either that the walls are paper thin within the rooms. Bring your earplugs if you like to sleep at night :(

Room Tip: If you opt for the female dorm, do not take a bed by the bath.

As a general statement there are a lot of things that bite but are non-fatal in the tropics. seeing somebody with bites can be from sand fleas, mosquitos in the rainforest or spiders. Coral cuts, sea anemone spikes and acute sunburn will ruin a vacation. I don't say they don't exist but it's not a surprise that more people report seeing bedbug bites than actually report the bites themselves.

Our hostel is preferred by RTW backpackers which means many pass through Asiatic and tropical destinations before coming here. Despite all we do to eradicate any problems when they happen you should remember bedbugs only get into a place accompanied or hosted by people. Hawaii is a tropical island and many people are not prepared to deal with flying insects or insects that live in the outdoors. One of the most popular, if not the most popular features of our hostel is the “Banyan Courtyard” which is unique to any Waikiki Hostel. Being in the open and under the stars makes complete eradication of insects very difficult, but we try. But in the end, if you want to be outdoors you should expect that conditions will not be pristine and sterile. Sometimes, we have guests who expect the latter. Thank you for your honest and thoughtful review.

This could be my second home:) the people there were so nice. the Backyard was great, and the location was great!! We stayed there for almost a week and it was the best. Jules, Robin and everyone who worked there was so nice!! Free towels, snorkel, and breakfast. And you could rent surfboards much cheaper than at the beach!!
Will be back!!

We're 3 German friends staying at the Seaside Hostel. Our time was totally awesome and we can highly recommend the hostel.
The staff was really friendly and helpful, the people there were totally nice and the rooms and the breakfast (which was for free!) was good. Furthermore we could borrow different stuff for the beach, swimming, ... also for free. Moreover, the staff gave us helpful insider information about the island, so that we were able to find the most beautiful spots on the island.
Special thanks to Natalya, an employee at the hostel, who was very friendly all the time, helpful and always put us into good humor. Thanks for your surfing lessons and for showing us around the island, when you were not at work!
We had a great time and we'll miss you!

The hostel has bed bugs. Everyone in the dorm room I was in got bitten multiple times, and had welts of bites in rows (characteristic of bed bugs). We told the hostel staff numerous times, and each time they acted surprised, as if it was new information (even the same staff members that we told acted this way). After several days of complaining, the owner finally went into the dorm room for a few hours with a hot gun. He did not appear to have worked on anything but the bed frames, leaving the mattresses, mattress covers, pillows and even some sheets in the room. He also does not appear to have done anything around the floor or the perimeter of the carpet. After a couple of hours (literally no more than three), he announced that he did not find anything, and the staff all acted like we had made the whole thing up. Bed bugs are tiny, so I am not sure what he expected to "find," especially on the black mattresses. I found bed bug droppings on my sheets and have numerous bites all over my arms and legs. Now I am worried that I might have brought them home with me, and have to spend days cleaning and doing laundry rather than getting back into my normal work/ life. I would not recommend this hostel at all, because the staff is not being honest with their patrons (one staff person admitted that they had had a bed bug problem in the past but had "gotten rid of" the bed bugs. But if the actions of the owner are any indication, they never got rid of them and are not likely to get rid of them any time soon).

Room Tip: Pick a different place to stay.

First, no hostel/hotel is immune from bedbugs since they are an insect that hitches a ride on a human or their luggage from point A to point B. Acknowledging this we have a 2-part progam for dealing with this pest.

Inspections. When a guest checks out we inspect their bed and the area arround it. We clean dorm rooms daily, semi-private rooms when a guest checks out.

Eradication. When a guest reports a bite, or suspected bite (the tropics is home to countless spiders, mosquitoes, sandfleas, etc.) we strip their bed and inspect and apply high heat and maybe pesticide to stop or prevent any infestation.

Some of our guests are on extended holiday or RW trips. Those traveling east have probably passed through areas where conditions favor bedbugs. We are aware that when a guest checks in, regardless of where they are coming from there is the possibility of bedbug hitch hikers. The only tools at our disposal are these inspections and our response to suspected bedbugs.

I had lots of bed bug bites and it seems that this hostel has such a problem in the past (read other reviews). Had there not been a bed bug problem, I would have rated this a five-star hostel. (Nice people, convenient location, and helpful services such as free checkout-day shower).

Thank you for your review. We are really excited about your affirmation of all we do to make your stay with us positive and memorable.

Bedbugs are hitch hikers who arrive uninvited with our human guests. Short of inspecting all incoming luggage, requiring that guests shower and shampoo before going to their room, we can only rely on other less invasive responses to this global problem that effects most of the hospitality industry. In our case, we rely on regular inspections and we deal immediately and decisively with all reported insect bites, even though these might be from a different insect encountered in the rain forest or at the beach.

We are also focused on providing our guests with the best possible experience in these beautiful islands. Those of us who work at the Seaside are lucky enough to live in paradise and we want you to experience what we have come to treasure, clean beaches, a pristine ocean, beautiful vistas and the Aloha spirit.
