Owner description: Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

“Leisurely hike”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014

This hike is a great getaway from Waikiki. It is on a paved road and an easy incline to the top. The view is nice all the way to the top, a peaceful walk even with other hikers going up and down. A nice change from the busy beaches of Waikiki. Nearby is Sea Life Park and a fabulous beach park, Makapua. The only draw back is the washroom are not very clean

““ Breathtaking Views @ Top & Great Exercise “”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2014

From the moment you park you vehicle @ the lot to the top of the hill, it will take you anywhere from 40 min to an hour depending on your physical ability. The path is paved for about 80% of the trek and then breaks into rough surface near the top but needs some work done to it since the paved sections have cracks at numerous places due to the rain I believe.

Lovely ocean views and cool breeze the entire time we were climbing but do bring plenty of water as it does get hot in the afternoon as well as u need to replenish the water you losses while sweating climbing to the top.

You get wonderful 360 degree view of the mountains and the ocean which surround the light house, even though you can get to the light house but you get to see it from the top and its worth the hike in the end get that magnificent view.

Bring lots of water and enjoy the hike…

“Great hike, spectacular views!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

Hiked the trail with our physically fit family with kids aged 6-13. (We hiked 5 different trails during our trip.) Like other reviewers said the hike is all uphill to the summit (and conversely all downhill going back). We went on a cloudy day and had some nice cool breezes. Even with the clouds the view was spectacular! Of the trails we hiked this was the second best maintained (second to Diamond Head). I never had any issues with footing. Well worth the effort for the great views.

“Be Prepared!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

The path is paved but due to changing landscapes there is a lot of broken asphault. Going up is definitely a workout but its well worth it! You cannot visit the actual lighthouse because the trail leading down to it closed but the view is absolutely breaktaking from the valley to the sea, it almost feels like your in New Zealand not Hawaii. There is a very nice lookout point that is fenced in and very accessible to everyone.
