Owner description: Further along Kalanianaole Highway is the Makapuu Lighthouse hiking trail. This easy route with its moderate incline to the 647-ft. summit is a popular spot during whale season between December and April. This is a definite photo opportunity even when humpbacks aren’t spouting offshore. If you’re really ambitious, tackle a pre-sunrise hike to the top so you can grab a glorious photo of the sunrise.

“No annoying stones on the ashphalt to distract from the view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

Go early morning, or late afternoon so the sun does not bake you.

Bring water. Bring camera. Park car. Proceed up hill. Hike the longest 1.5 miles you have seen in a long time - that sign has gotta be wrong! Arrive at lookout. Look up at the pillboxes and lament not having the motivation (or the proper shoes) to go up there. Next time... (yeah, right!)

Look for Molokai. Wonder why you can't see it very well since it's only about 25 miles away. Attempt scientific thought regarding earth curvature and "hazy conditions". Fail miserably.

Float back down to car on jello legs. Sit in car and wonder why you always forget to bring COLD drinks in a cooler for AFTER the hike. Drink more warm water. Drive away. Wonder why others are just arriving now as it's kinda late.

Now you may proceed to Happy Hour at The Shack in Hawaii Kai, knowing you have burned some calories. You are too sweaty and sticky to go to Bluwater Grill - so don't even think about it!

“Beautiful hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013 via mobile

Easy to moderate 2 mile hike. I'm currently 6 months pregnant and was able to complete the hike with no problem. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking, not a bad view the entire way. If you are able to visit anytime from Dec to April you'll be able to see the whales migrating and playing around, so cool! You aren't able to get down to the lighthouse but you are able to see it which is pretty neat. You want to try and go on a nice clear day and you'll be able to see Molokai off in the distance. We were able to see the island off in the distance and I wish I had brought binoculars. There's no shade so make sure you wear sunscreen, sunglasses and/or a floppy hat. All in all, we loved it and can't wait to do it again once my little one gets here!

“Whales! :D”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

This is a pretty good hike with a slow incline that brings you to some fabulous views. It is paved for the most part, as well, so there were a lot of strollers present. Plus, we saw a lot of migrating whales during our hike! Besides Ka'ena Point, this is one of the best places to see the whales on Oahu: Go see it!

“great whale watching”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

the only thing to make it better is to maybe have a city bus stop there instead of at the nearby golf course
