“A beautiful hidden gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2014

We took the tour of Shangri La while visiting Oahu. We had heard so much about this place and were not disappointed. The tour is lovely and intimate with very knowledgeable guides. You must take a mini-bus which seats 24 to the site and then the guides divide you into two groups of 12. You are taken through the estate with the exception of the bedroom which is currently under renovation until Oct 2014. The collection of Islamic art is as breathtaking as the views from this estate. We started out at the Honolulu Museum of Art which is a the only way to access this sight and enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Museum's café before heading to Shangri La. It was a day we will never forget. Make sure to reserve otherwise you may not get to see this little gem. Tours are only Wed-Sat and only 3 times a day 9, 10:30 & 1:30.

“Don't miss it!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2014 via mobile

This was an amazing house to visit. I was blown away by the architecture and the way that Doris Duke decorated with her Islamic collectibles. Susan our guide for the the trip was fun, knowledgeable and appealed to all ages. DO NOT MISS THIS.

“Take The Time To Tour Doris Duke's Shangri La”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2014

I have long yearned to see the heiress Doris Duke's Shangri La. I saw a biography of her on public television a few years ago that sparked my interest in her home & her fabulous collection of Islamic art. Finally, I had the opportunity. My husband & I arranged to get tickets for the tour of Shangri La through the Honolulu Museum Of Art. The tour includes a bus shuttle from the museum to Shangri La. The cost was $27 per person. This includes a visit to the museum after the tour. It is approximately 2 hours from the time you leave the museum until the time you return.

http://www.shangrilahawaii.org/ This quote from this link that describes the property of Shangri La. "The five acre complex integrates a 14,000-square-foot house, a Playhouse, and a pool, comprising a series of interlocking spaces, both indoors and out: rooms, courtyards, lanais, terraces, gardens, and numerous water features."

But, nothing prepared me for the grandeur of the art found within. Colorful Moorish tiles in intricate designs, huge inlaid tile wall art, metal lamps & columns in lacy filigree designs, heavily carved & painted ceilings, woven wall hangings, ancient pottery & glass wear, hand woven carpets, & much more. A whimsical tented room with a priceless chandelier & a fireplace fired my imagination. What wonderful parties she must have had there! The breath-taking natural views of the ocean framed with swaying palm trees were a photographers dream! Geometrical gardens with pools, water features & fountains pulled me into the fantasy of Shangri La!

“Excellent Tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2014

We drove up not knowing that we supposed to sign on with a tour from Wakiki, but the staff allowed us to follow the first tour bus entering and join the other visitors. The estate was quite beautiful but we were especially happy with the tour guide, the accompanying security person and other people working there who made this short visit a very pleasant one. They were very accommodating and more than helpful to us and our small group.

We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Shangri La, and hope that you enjoyed your visit to Hawai‘i. However, we do want to let other potential visitors know that all visits must be arranged through the Honolulu Museum of Art, and all tours depart from the HMA (900 S. Beretania Street). Visitors who do not arrive on the tour bus will unfortunately be turned away. Thanks for your understanding!

“Classy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2014 via mobile

Shangri-la is simply a terrific way to spend a couple of hours enjoying the beauty of one of the world's most unique homes. The elegance and personality of the estate was only exceeded by that of our guide, Susie Killeen. This is a must-do for everyone who has "done" everything else.
