“Great Spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

After looking at many reviews, it's hard to choose a hotel. I pretty much left it to my travel agent and hoped for the best since she had been to Hawaii. Stayed 6/22/13 to 6/27/13. The hotel is huge. Room (oceanview) was very nice and clean. Can't complain. Stayed on the 24th floor and you can still hear the street noise. Not a problem for us. Waikiki reminds me of a tropical Manhattan. Homeless on the street, vendors selling whatever they can, artists, etc. Lots of shopping, from high end Tiffany's, Coach etc. to flea market like area, all within a short walk. Beach is right across the street (you may want to go down the the left (facing ocean) side of the beach a block or two, more room, less surfers). Very convenient. We walked everywhere. Walmart was a couple miles away, which we brought our backpacks and purchased snacks and stuff for our room. We walked to Diamond Head and hiked all the way to the top. If you don't mind a mile or two walk to these places, it's great. We like the exercise. They gym was really nice and empty all the time. Pool was small but we never made it to sit by the pool. We preferred the beach which was awesome. We purchased rafts and layed on them in the ocean. Very relaxing. Loved the idea of free water in our fridge each day, free beach chairs, towels and bag for the beach. Very convenient. They even had the larger towels for us to use for the beach. We didn't eat in the hotel other than the breakfast that was provided which was a wonderful buffet each morning. I would definately go back to this hotel, however with the amount of time we spent in the hotel, I might opt to go cheaper next time since we were barely in the room or the hotel for that matter.

Room Tip: Hard to say. I heard the higher up the room the less noise. We still heard it but it wasn't ba...

We recently stayed here for 9 nights and have to say that on the whole it was an excellent experience. We arrived before 10AM from an early flight and thankfully our room was ready well before the standard check-in time. This definitely helped as we had just been on a ten hour flight with a 6 month old (though he's an excellent traveller). Getting the room meant that we were able to freshen up before heading out to explore. Before we left, housekeeping were quick to bring up the requested crib, and as the rooms are very spacious (especially by Waikiki standards) there was plenty of room for it without inhibiting on our space and ability to use the sitting chair or the desk. In fact I was pleasantly surprised with the floorplan of the room, it was considereably larger than other hotels that we have stayed at (Outrigger on the Beach, Pacific Beach & Aston Circle).

The bathroom (which many complain is dated) is well laid out with the shower and toilet behind a door and the large sink and counter top in a big, but private opening where the built-in cupboard also was. This area was handy for getting ready whilst my wife showered. Speaking of the shower we found the water pressure to be amazing and the water was hot hot hot (if you wanted it to be) - as far as hotel bathrooms go this is just about the most important thing! Yes, there is a shower curtain, but it did its job.

The bed was large and comfortable, with nice thread count on the linen, and I think six large comfy pillows were prvded by defaut (5 on the bed and one in the cupboard). More obviously could be requested if required!

Housekeeping were thorough and never impinged upong us regardless of the time that we left our room. They always kept us fully stocked with toiletries.

We used the pool and the pool area on level 3 quite a bit. Although the pool itself is a little small for the size of the hotel we found that most of the time there was very few people in it (even if there was quite a number on the surrounding pool beds). This meant that we could swim (and take bubs for a swim) without feeling crowded. The poolside service was good and the cocktails and food was not bad value. It was particularly reasonable during happy hour which ran from 4-6PM daily with live bands creating a nice atmosphere.

The lifts in the hotel are fast (we were on the 27th floor) and we never found ourselves waiting long. Though getting out to ground level from our room required us to change to a different smaller lift as getting from reception down to the ground level generally relies upon using escalators. The reason for this is the shops on the ground floor of the building, so I can understand why it is necessary, but still it would have been nice to be able to pop straight out on the ground floor.

Others on here have commented on the noise of the lifts, I can confirm that you can hear them if you are near to them, but the noise is not particularly obtrusive, and if you have the TV on (even on low volume) you don't really notice them at all. Light sleepers might be bothered by them, but we weren't and so didn't even consider asking to be moved. Noise from the street was a non issue, probably because we were quite high up.

Our city view room had a nice direct view of the moutains overlooking Waikiki and in fact from our balcony we had a view of the beach - other hotels may sneakily have tried to call this partial ocean view.

Having been to Honolulu a few times we knew just how great the location of hotel is, but it really hits home when you walk out one of the Kalakaua Av exits to a direct view of the Duke Kahanamoku statue and the picturesque blue waters of Kuhio beach.

If I had to find some negatives, one would be the very cheap coffee maker that the room was kitted out with. I'm not sure whether ours was defective, but as soon as you put water into it it started spitting out dangerously hot water even when the lid was not closed. We ended up getting reception to bring up a kettle to use for boiling water and this was fine.

We didn't have breakfast at the hotel as it was expensive and we didn't fancy waiting in the queue. It didn't appear to be excessively long, but we didn't hang around to verify on our way out to grab breakfast across the road at Duke's or at a nearby bakery.

Based on our experiences here we'd have no hesitation in staying again or in recommending the Hyatt Regency to friends and family.

Depending on what makes you comfortable on vacation this may or may not be your thing. The hotel is HUGE, like Vegas-huge. It may take you time to get down to the valet (let me add the valet staff was always courteous and helpful and I used them a lot--tipped them maybe every-other visit). And with a huge property comes crowds of people. Actually Waikiki is just plain crowded everywhere. But you may encounter long lines at the coffee place downstairs (Kimobean--it's good), and at the front desk, and you may have to wait a couple cycles to catch an elevator. The halls and rooms look like they were built in the '80's as far as décor go. Needs an update. But there's nothing wrong with them. Fairly large sized standard room. Comes with basics (mini-fridge, empty, hair dryer, balcony, etc) so I wasn't needing anything. The pool/hot tub area was attractive, but crowded. The customer service was above average, very helpful staff at the pool with towels for my extra large group. I have no concrete complaints here. We loved being able to walk down the "strip" in front of our hotel, all the shopping, restaurants, beach right across the street. We never ate at the restaurants in the hotel, other than coffee at Kimobean, so I cannot talk about them, other than the Japanese restaurant looked good. Lots of weddings going on in the lobby--we must've seen a wedding every hour for awhile there. Our room faced the Kings Village shopping area which always seemed to have some singer/concert at night, but it went quiet like clockwork at 10pm so I wondered if there is some regulation about noise. Also there is a farmers market every M,F 4-9pm at Kings Village, directly behind hotel. A good option as far as quality/quantity and price for baked goods, snacks.

Room Tip: I think all rooms are noisy at night until 10pm--there seems to be a 10pm cut-off for noise in Waiki...

We were up graded to an Ocean View room as soon as we checked in, the Hyatt is in a great location across the road from the beach and just a stroll to shops and cafes. We had a great holiday and if I went back I would not stay anywhere else. Our view was great and our room was cleaned every day and they really looked after us and were very friendly.

Room Tip: Ocean view room has a great view of the ocean

We planned this trip to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary.
We have always found the Hyatt Waikiki to be the most wonderful location to stay.
To our disappointment we incurred renovations for the entire stay which included the pool being inaccessible for our first day. I feel if you are paying to stay at a 4.5 rated hotel you should be advised that you will incur renovations. Our first room had the balcony locked for no access and huge cables hanging down obstructing our view of the beach. Fortunately we were moved to a partial ocean view room after much negotiation by my husband. We are also Hyatt Gold Passport members. On our visit to Waikiki we will find accomodation at a new resort.

Room Tip: Partial ocean in the Ewa tower is excellent as you have a beach and street view. Of an eveving it i...

Aloha,

Thank you for reviewing your stay. We regret that your visit was not what you had expected. There is some facade work being done on property however the pool is not included in any work. It was most likely undergoing a routine cleaning when you arrived and we regret that you were unable to use it until the following day. We have shared your comments regarding the difficulty of moving rooms with our Front Desk Manager. We do value all of our guest feedback and will review your post closely.

This was by far the best service hotel I have used. I stay at dozens of hotels every year, and this one far exceeded my expectations. Everyone from the valet to the pool guy was friendly and went out of their way for service. We even enjoyed the Expedia desk guy who gave us very good advice and never tried to sell us on anything. We didn't have a flight out until 10 pm that night, so they let us use a room to shower and clean up well after our check out time. They never tried to nickle and dime us for anything. Don't be cheap and just grab any room. Get a room with ocean view and maybe splurge for the regency club. We were able to watch fireworks on a Friday night from our balcony. The beach is across the street and there is plenty of shopping and eating within walking distance. The bathroom is a little dated but very very clean. Bed was comfortable and we were able to open the balcony door and rest to the sounds of the ocean.

Room Tip: Grab at ocean view room. We stayed on the 35th floor. Amazing! Try to get away from the elevators, t...

We enjoyed staying at this hotel. Our room was enormous and very clean. Service was good and breakfast was fine. The nice thing was being able to have your eggs/ omelette cooked in front of you. The best part of breakfast was the setting. - a lovely outdoor area ,overlooking Waikiki beach. The tour desk was very helpful and the location of this hotel was fabulous. If you have small children, I guess it would be better to be on the beach side but for us it didn't matter. You can hire beach chairs free of charge from pool area and walk across the road to the beach. The lunch by the pool was great and this hotel was good value for money.
