“Authentic Chinese food in Chinatown.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

A family run type of restaurant. Nothing too fancy here, just authentic Chinese food. Not too many Chinese restaurants stay open during dinner time in Chinatown but this is one of them. Everything is reasonably priced and the presentation is good. I live here in Honolulu and frequent the place. One of their signature dishes is Hunan chicken with rice and side condiments for dipping. Another is Uhu - a two course dish (my favorite) made with whole fish....the first part of the dish is a healthy soup with fish parts and vegtables. The second part of the dish is a fish stir fry made with the rest of the whole fish...so you actually get a large soup, and a large stir fry dish. With a side of rice, this a meal enough for two persons. The squab at $2 each is good also (order 2-3 squab for the both of you).

“Great place for dim sum lunch or a takeout meal”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 29, 2012

We order the same dishes each time we come to Sunflower Cafe. The atmosphere and service are average, but the food is very reasonably priced and always delicious and the menu is enormous. I would recommend the Hainanese chicken and rice dish, which is a great value. When we bought 3 take-out orders of it for dinner, it ended up being enough for our family of 5 to have for two meals! The stir-fried green beans, chow fun, ha gao (steamed shrimp dumplings), steamed sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, mini char siu bao (barbequed pork buns), and don tot (egg custards) are dine-in favorites of ours. There are many options for kids, who love that their food comes in little baskets. Tip: Park in the underground parking structure adjacent to the playground square, and Sunflower Cafe is just around the next block.

“Spotty service but food not over seasoned.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2012

Ok-visited after seeing other reviews. Overall pretty friendly but our waitress was bad. It was slow when we arrived but it took like forever to place our order. Then when the waitress finally came to take our order, she just walked away in the middle and we didn't get to finish placing our order. We noticed that she did the same thing to another table too. Kinda rude! I had to flag her down to finish my order. She was the only waitress servicing customers except for the other person who appeared to be the owner. The only other person was a young girl that must have been the daughter. Other tables were getting poor service too with some getting their own water and condiments. The took a long time but the taste was great! Not overly seasoned and not too much salt. The shumai was super good! Also their turnip cake was good. Tried the Singapore chow fun which had an unusual spice in it but was also good. The restaurant was starting to get full (around 11:00) when we left and it was strange to see the staff sitting down to eat with a full restaurant. I can only assume that the service was only going to get worse. If they can correct the service I would have rated it four or five stars.
