The Modern is just fabulous - rooms, service, facilities, location... what's not to love?

It's beside the beach, but not directly on it; near Ala Moana, but not too close to it; it's close to the main strip - but a healthy distance so you can escape the crowds & sales pitches.

We were so impressed with every aspect of it - quality, design, service, creativity, flexibility.

Watch out Modern... we'll be baaaack!

I like this hotel a lot. It's modern & cool, just the way I like it. The ocean side, with the marina is beautiful. The 2 pools are just gorgeous! Great honeymoon hotel with Champers on arrival. A little bit pricey, but that's ok, considering it's our honeymoon.

Way attractive hotel away from the noise and chaos at the other end of tourist mecca Waikiki. Great surfboard sculpture behind front desk! (Stealin the idea but will use old boards and outside instead!) Greeted promptly, efficiently and very pleasantly at front desk.

Terrific room but with a lousy view...However, I can check out kaiser's surf from my room. Large and comfortable, clean and quite with understated but tasteful decor-not to tikki
Door-bellman are helpful and positive.
Probably the best coffee every morning in the lobby (complimentary). Get up early if you want a WSJ instead of the local Honolulu newspaper. But local papers are so cool!
I walk so everything is easy: walking down to the tourist end of Waikiki or over to the mall.

Concierge with prompting will get you to great local restaurants and not the standard tourist spots. Gotta really prompt and push them but it's worth it. My two favorites were Uncle Bo's and Side Street--reviews on those later.

Pool area is beautiful but that's not why most of us get to Hawaii. I'm here post-transpac so beach and ocean view is not a high priority. Towel staff is great. Pool area service staff is spotty at best. Don't think I ever had food/drink service that matched the rest of the hotel.

Maid service is always very quite good but really random: morning, afternoon etc. Love the water bottle delivery early evening!

Overall:
Not a beach property- but 5 min walk
Beautiful property and rooms
Excellent service with minor exception
Only reason not to stay here is if you must be on the sand or want the noise & crowds at other end of Waikiki.

Nice location away from the chaos of central Waikiki. Not on the beach but only a 3 to 5 minute walk via a ramp leading from the pool area. Nice and close to Ala Moana shopping mall if that is your thing. Exceptional service via all staff who were extremely helpful. These guys have been trained well on how to make their guests feel welcome. Rooms very clean and adequate size without being overly large. We travelled with a small( less then 2 year old) child. We were told that the hotel is not family friendly but we in no way felt this was the case at any time. The sunrise pool had a nice graduated area for our child to splash in. Morimoto restaurant was simply delicious and highly recommended. Would strongly recommend to others and plan to stay ourselves gain.

After having stayed eight days on East and West Maui in a large cottage and a sizable suite, I initially thought our room was small, but it was so well appointed that it didn't matter. The staff was so friendly and helpful, greeting us with cilantro lemonade and cold washcloths. The room provided three different sarongs to wear on the beach. The bathroom was very nice and the bed was extremely comfortable. The food in Morimoto was great for dinner and breakfast, and the décor there was amazing. Two pools, one adult-only, were beautiful, overlooking the ocean and cozy daybeds, but I can't imagine spending time there and not on the beach. There was live acoustic music in the late afternoons at the pool bar. The views of the ocean and Honolulu were spectacular from the balcony of our room.
Although the Modern is not right on the ocean, it's only steps away. The Hilton resort next door was beautiful, with a huge lagoon for guests, but so crowded and chaotic (and just trapped salt water with a lot of children.......no chlorine - hmmm). We were happy that we hadn't stayed there.
We found that walking a bit farther down the beach toward Waikiki provided an area less crowded. The military base has stands set up to rent chaise lounges and beach umbrellas for $30 (non-military price), and we did that for two blissful days. Dinner at the Sheraton resort one night was perfect, with the best Mahi I'd had the entire trip. Walking back to the hotel at night provided a great nightlife experience, with live bands and karaoke. Dinner at the Charthouse another night was also excellent.
We'd been told by everyone on Maui that Oahu would be disappointing, but I wish we'd had more days there. On our last day, we explored the shops in the resort district. Absolutely loved the faster pace of Honolulu and the people. The water was calm toward the shore, with the big waves farther out. We could watch the surfers (the expert ones) in some places, and there was and area near the harbor in which they gathered, and where apparently some live in their vans. This made us think of, "Book 'em, Danno"! Very interesting place to visit and worth the trip.

Room Tip: There are seventeen floors. The top floor may have been a penthouse. We stayed on the sixteenth fl...

Just on the central Waikiki, walking distance to Ala Monan shopping mall, we have stayed at the top corner flat large balcony with stunning beach & city view, the pool is very awesome with underwater hi-fi system. room is modern Hawaii style with a very conformable bed set. staff is helpful and nice. The in-house restaurant Morimoto is a must try for all sea food lovers, the cool plate of lobster is haven !
