“Yataimura Beer Garden & Food Court is where it's at!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

Shirokiya's Yataimura Beer Garden & Food Court is like being at a Japanese festival every day, and the next best thing to a plane ticket to Tokyo. Even if you don't care for Japanese food, there will be something here that will tempt your palate. There's so many different types of foods to choose from the various vendors and stations, it can actually become overwhelmingly difficult to decide, yet no matter what it is, chances are it's going to be oishii (delicious)!

Sure, you can spend $50+ per person at nearby Tanaka of Tokyo, if you want a full restaurant Tepanyaki experience. Or you can spend $5-10 per person at Yataimura, and get pretty much the same food and quality, with much more selection. Not only that, cheap beer during happy hour. Try $1-$2 pints and $4-$8 pitchers from 5:30-10pm.

Specialties you'll find in Yataimura include authentic made-to-order Japanese Ramen, Tempura Udon, Tonkatsu (Pork Cutlet), Yakitori (BBQ Chicken Skewers), Takoyaki (a ball-shaped squid dumpling), Omusubi, Sushi, Japanese Curry, a wide assortment of bento lunch boxes, a full service buffet line of American, local and japanese favorites, plus much more!

And this isn't no "tourist trap" joint, but a place also very popular with the locals due to the reasonable prices and wide selection.

There's lots of restaurants and a huge food court in Ala Moana Center, but make sure before you settle on any of them, you make it a point on checking out Shirokiya's awesome Yataimura Beer Garden & Food Court. You'll be absolutely blown away, thanking folks like us who recommended it!

“An outstanding (little known to tourist) Japanese/Asian food courtyard located just outside Waikiki”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

On the second floor of Shirokiya (a department shore in the Ala Mona Shopping center) is an outstanding food courtyard featuring a hugh selection of the very best Japanese/Asian food. The food is of outstanding quality and prepared as you watch. This is some of the best food on the island and the price is very reasonable. You buy food from any of the large number of stands and either eat it in the there in cafeteria type setting or take it with you. All the locals know about this place but not too many tourist. This place is a 5-10 minute walk from the Hawaii Hilton Village end of Waikiki. Waikiki visitors eating over priced junk food in Waikiki could be eating outstanding fresh Japanese food for the same price if they only knew about Shirokiya's in the Ala Moana Shopping Center.

“Opposite of tourist trap”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013 via mobile

Staying at Ala Moana Hotel but when we asked the concierge for the best Japanese food recommended a place across Waikiki. She was so wrong! This is just across the skywalk and has great food, cheap beer, and welcoming atmosphere. Great selection too. I had seafood don from the sushi place in the corner, my wife had garlic shrimp from the other seafood place near the escalator, and my kids had spam musubi from the packaged food counters. All reasonable prices and good quality. Reminded us of our trip to Japan last year.

I only wish I had known about this place sooner, I have no problem with the idea of coming here every day of my trip, but sadly we spent the first couple if days trying a slew of other places to mixed results. I wish it just had more notoriety, but even though it was packed, maybe it's not really a place that sees a lot of tourists given how tucked away it is.

Also, if people tell you there is no shave ice or snow ice in Ala Moana, don't believe them! They got it here!

“A Japanese Fast food experience!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

You wouldn't even know it's there! Tucked in, unassumingly, between novelty stores on the second floor of the mall is Shirokiya. It's both a department store and a food court. If you're in Ala Moana Mall stop by and see the array of Japanese delights such as sushis, sashimis, bentos, tonkatsus, mochis, teriyakis, tempuras, etc. You will be entertained gastronomically with the display of food from one stall to the next. With so many to choose from, and if you're like me who is indicisive, you may have to go around a second time to see what it is that fancies your taste buds. Every time I visit Honolulu I have to stop by Shirokiya and be delighted once more as my eyes feasts on these mouth watering display of foods! It's inexpensive and there is so much too choose from. There are plenty of tables and chairs where you can enjoy your carefully chosen entrees. Enjoy your visit in Shirokiya! I did!

“large selection, reasonable prices”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2013

STAY AWAY FROM SHIROKIYA! (when you're starving, that is)

It is like a mini Japan up in there! Granted, I've never actually been to Japan. Or any other country besides Canada (which c'mon, does not count). But I'm assuming that's what it would be like.

The cool thing is, they have time stamps on their food. This way, you know it hasn't been sitting there for 3 days and accidentally eating mold, thinking it was seaweed.

There are SO many food options - you will have trouble deciding what to get. I tried the takoyaki, which I was not a fan of. Too battery for my taste. I also got the chicken musubi, which was very flavorful and filling. I was already so full after but now I regret not getting other things to try.

Don't say I didn't warn you.
