Owner description: Chartered in 1976 as a not-for-profit corporation, the Hawaii Army Museum Society, also known by its acronym, HAMS, was organized by several former military veterans and patriotic members of the Honolulu community. Its sole mission is to support the development of the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii. Today, it continues that tradition by funding exhibit expansion and creation, and other improvements at the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii which is housed in historic Battery Randolph on the grounds of Ft. DeRussy in Waikiki. Constructed from 1909 to 1911, this Coastal Artillery Battery protected Oahu with its two 14-inch disappearing guns. The battery was built so well that it was unable to be torn down in the early 1970's to make way for the military's Hale Koa Hotel. The battery was turned into a museum in 1976 and begins with story of early Hawaiian warfare and covers every major military event in the Pacific theater of operations through Vietnam. The Gallery of Heroes honors Hawaii's soldiers who have received our nation's highest awards: the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross. The Museum is under the direction of the U.S. Army Center of Military History and receives well over 100,000 visitors a year. The Museum is free to all. Both the Museum and the Hawaii Army Society's Museum Store are open from 9 am - 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Audio tours are available for rent from the Society for a small fee in both English and Japanese. Parking is available directly across from the museum. Validation for a reduced parking fee is available at the welcome desk.

“Needs to be respected and visited.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

Great military history of Hawaii and the brave men that fought for the U.S. during the different wars. Makes you feel embarrassed that the Hawaiians were respected and honored as they should have been. It is FREE, donations if you want!

“Interesting museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2013

Enjoyed a visit here. The museum is in the old gun battery at the fort, and good explanations of what room you are in and each housing exhibits.

Not really a place for young kids though

“Nice Surprise!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

My son asked if we could visit this museum so we went. It was actually really nice. They had great displays, lots of well preserved weapons, a nice short video about the work the Army Corps of Engineers does and of course the helicopter on the roof.

“Nice break from hustle and bustle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

The museum is a nice place to visit if you are interested in military history or not. It takes you on a journey from the 1700's and the warfare in the Hawaiian islands right through to the Vietnam war. It focuses alot on involvment of Hawaii in conflicts throught the years. The museum has a good balance between art and pictures, real or replica artifacts and scale models.
