“Nicely preserved, worth the time and money.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013 via mobile

This is a very well presented and preserved example of a WWII submarine. The care and love represented by its condition is impressive.
Even with the well done job of presenting the boat to visitors, I still can't imagine what it was like to be at sea, and at war, on such a small vessel. These boats were manned by very brave young men.
The one negative we experienced was a very bored, rude and abrupt docent who obviously wanted to be anywhere but on the boat. I wanted to tell here to get a job she enjoyed but decided to ignore her and not let it ruin the visit. Hopefully you have a better docent experience.

“Very good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

Be sure to use the audio guided tour as you tour around the submarine; it is well worth it. The commentary from veterans as well as history and information about the craft. You will need to be reasonably mobile as some of the areas are small.

Visited USS Bowfin Submarine Museam & Park in September 2013, highly suggest arriving early in the day - we arrived around 10:15am and the park was extremely packed. There was plenty to see and do - definately head over to the Arizona Memorial while there.

“Watch Your Head”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

Each visitor gets an audio tour with ticket purchase and, in one of the first few narrated sentences, you're admonished to watch your head due to low hatch entrances, lots of heavy metal machinery jutting out from ceilings, etc. So one of the first things I did was to bang my head on a ladder. Watch your head !

If you want a realistic tour pertaining to U.S. navy history, you can't get much more real than to go down inside an actual submarine. The USS Bowfin has amazing history in that, during all nine missions, only one casualty was sustained - a leg injury. The vessel had a hotline to Lady Luck.

Admission is only $10. A photographer snaps your picture at the tour entrance, so you know they'll want to sell you something at the end.

It takes about an hour to absorb the entire tour, and you climb all over the ship, with the exception of one or two rooms.
The audio is exceptionally interesting because men who actually served on the ship are interviewed about different aspects of life on the submarine.
The physical part of the tour is fascinating, with all the electrical equipment and engine equipment and torpedo rooms. Explanations are provided for all sections of the vessel, inside and out. Peering out over the harbor through a working periscope mounted on the deck is pretty cool.

You might have difficulty with the tour if you're claustrophobic - quarters are unbelievably cramped. And it's hot down there. Fans keep air circulating, but it gets stuffy. It's not so bad if only one or two people are under at a time but, if there are a parade of people, it's just not comfortable. I can't imagine a hundred men living down there for weeks on end.

When you finish the tour and return to the ticket stand, you're invited to see your picture. The surprise is that it's imprinted onto the front page of The Honolulu Gazette "extra" dated December 7,1941 with headlines of locals and tourists helping out when needed. You're front page news. And it's only $10. We couldn't leave without it !

After you finish touring the submarine, there are half a dozen other items of interest adjacent to the submarine site that you'll want to see, including its anchor embedded in concrete. If you visit Pearl Harbor, don't miss this
