“Give yourself the day here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

Choose a day for this marvelous journey into world history and culture. Exceptional pieces of Buddhist statuary, Japanese prints, pottery and masks. The museum offers a number of tours and docent tours are readily available. the tours require reservations, so plan ahead to get the most out your visit. Actually, it's possible to take several days to absorb all this museum offers.
Make reservations at the Museum Café if you decide to stay the day, and be sure to take time to browse the museum shop for exceptional gift values.

“Quality photography collection”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

We really enjoyed the Honolulu Museum of Art; we went to see the Ansel Adams and Georgia O'Keefe in Hawaii exhibition, and it did not disappoint. How interesting to find that these icons had a little adjustment time in their artmaking when they arrived in Hawaii--both on commissioned work. The photography collection is very good, varied and very interesting on a number of levels. If I go back to Honolulu, I will go to the museum again.
Also, the lunch is very good--reservations aren't a bad idea, or just get takeout and sit at a table out in the courtyard.

“Worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

I walked to the museum from waikiki. Its a bit of walk but gives you a chance to see the non commercial/ touristy waikiki. The museum is well maintained and planed out. It will take about 3-4 hours and the gift shop is good too. They some original van Gogh ,monet etc. Its a great collect of paintings ans status. Their temporary exhibits were great too.

“Fantastic museum, sadly overlooked by most Oahu visitors”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014

We have been to this museum several times over the past few years and it is really remarkable. Anyone visiting Oahu who is at all interested in art should take the easy city bus ride from Waikiki. The museum is never crowded and we think that it is really an under-utilized gem. The extensive Asian collections are wonderful. This year they had excellent temporary exhibitions including Georgia O'Keffe, Ansel Adams and others. Last year they had an exclusive Chinese collection; seen at their museum and no where else outside of China. They have a very racy woodblock exhibit that was donated by a lifelong collector of erotic oriental art. The Doris Duke Islamic art collection is spectacular and you can book a tour to Doris Duke's Diamond Head home which is totally decorated with Islamic artifacts. There is also a French Impressionist Gallery. The museum itself is very pretty with several enclosed courtyards. The restaurant has food a cut above the usual museum fare - reservations are a good idea. The locals eat there which should give you some idea of the quality. Afterwards, if you are a walker you can walk on to downtown and Chinatown and take the bus back to Waikiki.

“Must Stop for any Art Hounds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

I was very impressed with the breadth of collection stored here. Didn't know what to expect but they have a sampling from a very large range - impressionist, renaissance, modern, Indian, Chinese and Japanese. American modern section closed while we were there but still worth the visit. And to top it off the restaurant there is amazingly good. Although reserve as you walk by it, waiting until the end cost us 45 minutes of sitting time because they were booked up. I would go back to look again next time in town.
