“Small, peaceful, worth a visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2013

The exhibits are good, and the display rooms are well kept and in a quiet and peaceful setting. This is also the start of the tour for Shangri-La, the Doris Duke estate. The #2 bus stops right in front, which makes it easily accessible. It also has a lovely setting for the restaurant, with very good food.

“Just OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

Good quality art and skilled crafts. Not enough to satisfy. Some painting from early 1900's and then another room of very conteporary "art".

“Small, but nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

I enjoy the feel of the museum. I especially like the quaint Chinese Courtyard. The museum gift shop is smallish, but has some unique Hawaiian gift items. Hard to believe such a quiet little oasis exists between the hustle bustle of Waikiki and Downtown Honolulu.

Beautiful building with pretty courtyards; excellent general art collection. Exceptional Chinese, Korean and Japanese art collections. Outstanding cafe.
Contemporary museum modestly interesting but not worth the trip, altho in a pretty house.

“World-class, don't miss”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

I signed up for an early afternoon tour of Shangri-la and, due to family schedules, had to be dropped off at 10:00, when the museum opened. I had no idea if there would be enough to fill my time, but I was surprised to discover a jewel of a museum, beautifully run, with a marvelous collection. The galleries are arrayed around a series of lovely courtyards, so you are never more than a few steps from the Hawaiian sun. The art covers the full range of art history, with everything from Italian Renaissance madonnas to Picasso. There seems to be at least one piece by all the "greats", and not second-rate selections. The galleries are spacious and well-curated, with informative captions. Some of the collections are deep-dives, like the Indian art, and the special exhibits were fascinating. I had a delicious lunch in the charming restaurant, and the visit to Shangri-la was wonderful. It's one of the most breathtaking house museums I've ever visited.

The Honolulu Museum of Art and Shangri-la were highlights of my Hawaiian vacation. Don't miss it!
