I signed up for an early afternoon tour of Shangri-la and, due to family schedules, had to be dropped off at 10:00, when the museum opened. I had no idea if there would be enough to fill my time, but I was surprised to discover a jewel of a museum, beautifully run, with a marvelous collection. The galleries are arrayed around a series of lovely courtyards, so you are never more than a few steps from the Hawaiian sun. The art covers the full range of art history, with everything from Italian Renaissance madonnas to Picasso. There seems to be at least one piece by all the "greats", and not second-rate selections. The galleries are spacious and well-curated, with informative captions. Some of the collections are deep-dives, like the Indian art, and the special exhibits were fascinating. I had a delicious lunch in the charming restaurant, and the visit to Shangri-la was wonderful. It's one of the most breathtaking house museums I've ever visited.
The Honolulu Museum of Art and Shangri-la were highlights of my Hawaiian vacation. Don't miss it!
