Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

“Nice, but not a must see for me”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

Although its not out of the way by any stretch, since we drove here ourselves without a guidebook, I don't think we did it justice (ie. I forgot there were mosaics further up). The monument itself is substantial compared to other national cemeteries we've been to but if you've been to D.C. and/or Arlington, its a bit of a letdown. It's also a functioning cemetery (people tending to plots) so it was a little uncomfortable visiting it as a tourist attraction.

“Amazing Mosaics”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2014

Much of the memorial was under construction/remodeling when we visited. There are a lot of steps up to the top, but there is also a drive that goes there, definitely a better option!
We were able to see the mosaics, a highlight of the memorial. They show the development of various battles of WWII, Korean War and Viet Nam. Not only were they informative, the artistry is also impressive — especially the small details worked into the compass in the maps.
I hope to be able to visit again when there is not construction hiding some of the views.

“An amazing tribute”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2014

If you have multiple days in your visit to Honolulu, and particularly if you have a rental car, make a visit. The drive is very doable, away from center city, and amid a lovely, hilly, residential area. The view from the top is amazing. Hawaii is wonderfully unique but is also a part of the American story. The heros buried in this lovely setting can attest to that.
