Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

“Walk up to the Chapel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

I've seen people pay for tours to go to the National Memorial Cemetary and not even get off the bus. I highly recommend that you drive there and walk up to the chapel. The monuments with names on them are something to see. The chapel is very nice and if you will pay attention the tree in front are cut in such a way as when the sun cast a shadow on the groun it is in the shape of a heart in the morning through the afternoon. Also, for a good view of Honolulu walk up the road to the left of the Chapel and read the markers in memorial as you do. At the top is a great view of Honolulu. There are trees at the Cemetery that are beautiful in bloom. There is one tree that is awesome that is red when blooming. You can't miss it. Walk the cemetery and see all the unknown Pearl Harbor graves and the grave of the Hawaiian astronaut on the Space Shuttle Challenger. Well worth the visit.

“Picturesque Cemetery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

Only briefly visited this cemetery as part of the Pearl Harbour tour. Next time I go back I will spend a morning there as we couldn't stop in the bus and get out, looks absolutely amazing and there is so much history to learn from the Pearl Harbour attack!

“Remember our dead”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

By all means, come here and view the gravesides of our fallen soldiers from Peral Harbor. They are buried far from home and need to be remembered for their service to our country.

“Spiritually Patriotic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2013

This sacred, hallowed National cemetery grounds are exquisitely well maintained, optimized with respect for our veterans, many of whom gave their most precious life for this country... The property is also exceptionally well organized for visitors to search for gravesites...

“Free - Worth Viewing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

Take a few minutes and drive to the memorial, there are mosaics showing the history of WWII in the pacific, a chapel and statue. There is also all the names of those who are MIA etched on stone. Well worth the trip – and it is free.
