Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

“Very moving”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

Though we had a wonderful volunteer tour guide, the guide did nothing to affect the impact this site had on me. The sight of thousands of graves of men and women who had served their country was awe-nspiring and poignant. A must-see venue.

“Quiet place for reflection”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

Everyone who is in Honolulu should take the opportunity to go and see this amazing place. We were fortunate to get a guided tour from Bernard a Veteran who volunteers there. He made it a memorable experience. One we will never forget.

“The Arlington of the Pacific”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 7, 2012

Beautiful setting! There are many historic graves on the site, including Ellison Onizuka, a member of the Challenger crew and other well known people who gave their lives. There is also a section for the unknowns from the Korean War which is now being worked by the Joint Prisoners of War, Missing in Action Accounting Command. A Pearl Harbor survivor is also attempting to help identify the unknowns from that day based on the information and items gathered when they were recovered. So far he has identified 100 previously unknowns!

“worth it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

We only did a drive through but beautiful place. and a great view of diamond head at the top. Our guide said there were 45K people buried there.. feels like a lot - not sure if that's accurate or not..

“Moving--- wonderful City and Mountain Views”

Take time to read some of the inscriptions/memorials. The grounds are magnificent ---a tribute to our heroes.
