Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2012

Don't miss the little museum just as you enter the cemetery. Gives you some interesting tidbits of information. Not only is this a beautiful national monument, it's also one of the best views of Wakiki you'll see.

“Not worth a special trip”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

We went as part if a bus tour. It would be much more meaningful if we were Americans. The cemetery is very tasteful, and a place of national pride.

“Punch Bowl”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

We were able to take a tour of the cemetery. Found a neighbors husbands grave while we were there. There is also a tour of the the memorials for WWII showing differant battles on maps. They are working on a Viet Nam map at this time.

“Wonderful View”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

The view from Punchbowl Crater is delightful, looking down over Waikiki and Diamondhead. However, if you're there on a tour bus, you are not allowed off the bus for photos or touring of any kind. It was a drive-through for us. Beautiful flora, fauna, and grounds though.

Called Punchbowl. Found too many steps difficult but very comprehensive coverage of activities & arenas of conflict.
