Owner description: The resting place for more than 25,000 victims of three American Wars - World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War – this is truly the “Cemetery of Heroes.” Punchbowl was formed some 75,000 to 100,000 years ago during the Honolulu period of secondary volcanic activity. A crater resulted from the ejection of hot lava through cracks in the old coral reefs that, at the time, extended to the foot of the Koolau Mountain Range. Of special note is a monument honoring Hawaii-born astronaut Ellison Onizuka, who perished aboard the Challenger space shuttle in 1986. Also noteworthy are the Courts of the Missing, white stone tablets bearing the names of those missing in action from World War II.

“Great Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2008

The views and the memorial are well worth the trip here. It is yet another really close attraction to the main drag of Waikiki. There is plenty of military cemetery-related items to check out that go along w/ the great views from the top. It is a little hot around noon in the blazing sun, but there is also ample shade. If you have the chance to come by here, please do. The drive over is also very pretty.

What a beautiful place! I didn't realize what the Punchbowl Crater was until we got there. It is a beautiful cemetary. We were there a couple of days after Veteran's Day so the flowers were amazing!

If you walk up to the lookout, the view of Honolulu is amazing - without the exertion of going up Diamond Head.

I would recommend a drive up there! However, remember that it is a cemetary and there are services there almost daily, don't forget to be respectful.

“Take the Time to Expore”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2007

After visiting many of the other important historical sites, ie., USS Arizona (and talking with several Pearl Harbor survivors), USS Missouri, ect., visiting the PunchBowl was a poignant way to end the day.
My only suggestion to anyone thinking of driving up here is to research who is actually buried there and to visit their graves. Perhaps the most celebrated would no doubt be Ernie Pyle, but the Punchbowl has many other historic figures.
I was able to easily located several graves of causalties of the Pearl Harbor attack, as well as many from Iwo Jima.

My only complaint, or disappointment perhaps, is what some folks have done to the trees within the cemetary. What a shame.

“The drive is worth the trip alone”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2004

We went up here after hearing about this at the USS Arizona memorial. The drive was really nice, with views all along the way. It was November and the flowers were in full bloom. The cemetery was very peacful, as it should be. We were wondering what to do at first and then we found the memorials with names listed from WWII. There are 10's of thousands. Our last name was listed many times. Each name has a rank and duty. Lots of young people. It's a quiet place and we saw only about 5 other people there. The drive through the poorer areas of Honolulu to the entrance was a reality check. Not everywhere on Oahu is sun and fun.
