I have been to Hawaii four times. Each time I include the Honolulu Zoo in my itinerary. Who would expect that a zoo located in the midst of Waikiki could provide a respite from the noise and crowds. There are many positives about this zoo. The location is perfect for anyone staying in or around Waikiki. It is within easy walking distance of most of the hotels and for those who rather forgo the walk the bus is a good solution. Visitors are allowed to bring their own food and drink in which makes it a more affordable visit since one does not have to purchase costly snacks from the vendors. The zoo's paths are paved and well maintained. In addition to animals there are many small gardens including a children's garden with several whimsical statues. There is also a playground...great for letting parents rest while the children burn off some energy. The zoo is not overly large but allow for several hours as it does get hot and rest stops may be needed.
I toyed with giving the Honolulu Zoo a very good rating as opposed to the good one I chose. I do love this zoo and have enjoyed it each time I have visited. This time around I discovered the admission price had increased to $14 age 13 and up, $6 age 3-12 and free under the age of 2. That is a bit pricey for a family outing. On this last visit many of the animals were simply not on display. No indication if is is because they were elsewhere. Some of the exhibits looked as if they had not been inhabited for a while. There appeared to be a decline in the zoo's upkeep compared to previous visits. It is still worth a visit and I will visit again on my next trip.
