My husband was on leave from OIF / Iraq so we had our family vacation
at the Hale Koa. Our kids are a teenager (19) and a toddler (2 yrs old) and hadn't seen Dad in almost a year. Hawaii trip really stretched our budget, but the Hale Koa made ALL the difference. It far exceeded my expectations. First class amenitites and resort setting, gorgeous landscaping, wide open parkland spaces, wonderful rooms, and could not beat the price. The savings on the rooms were about half off from what other (and lesser) resorts on the beach were charging. On top of that, the savings in "no tax" alone was really a winner. And the food prices were also far less expensive than comparable resorts. They also have an MWR / ITT office on site with discount prices, or if you go out to the NEX by Pearl Harbor there's a full ITT that gives even steeper discounts.
There's a PX on site with many things you might want to have or need.
The Luau on site was good too, especially with a little one. Laundry facilities also helped for long R&R. Lovely pools. Great family atmosphere. Playground right on site too (with climbing and sliding equipment, not swings).
I was not expecting such a great resort, considering the deeply discounted rates, but I was tremendously impressed with the quality and caliber of the Hale Koa. The only things that would have made things better: (1) better pillows; (2) fewer rocks in the water just off the beach - seems this stretch is particularly rocky and it became difficult w/ the little one and the rocks underfoot; and (3) small refrigerator and microwave in the room would have made a WORLD of difference, especially with the toddler. That last one did increase our expenses and reduced convenience. They have
"refreshment cabinets" for keeping soft drinks a bit cooler than room temp., but not cool enough for storing milk or other perishables.
Overall, A++ experience. I am SO thankful for the Hale Koa and it was
really wonderful spending our vacation with other military folks too.
People are a lot friendlier and there's a lot more cameraderie. It was really, really terrific being there!
