“72 acres on Waikiki!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

My family and I stayed 10 days at the Hale Koa August 2013. It's unique on Waikiki due to the expanse of the property. While most hotels have little or no beachfront, Hale Koa has 500+ yards of beachfront as well as a sizeable park are and 400+ rooms of the resort. It's very family friendly with an adults only pool area for those who prefer the quiet. The only negative we found was the food in the restaurants was marginal at best but there are excellent choices within a couple of blocks so that wasn't a major issue. It's active, reserve and retired only so if you fit one of these categories, I highly recommend

The grounds were beautiful and the beach was the widest and least crowded on Waikiki. The bed was very comfortable and the sound from other rooms was non-existent. All experiences with this hotel were great and the price is unbeatable with the amenities.

The Hale Koa is breathtaking! This was the first time I stayed at a military owned property. It blew my mind. The open air lobby is gorgeous and inviting. There's a waterfall, plenty of seating to lounge around and tropical plants throughout.
When we walked in our room, we ran to the balcony to stare dead straight ahead at nothing but ocean. Oh my!!!!!! We kept the balcony door open the entire trip. Beds were comfy, bathroom was great, wonderful room overall.
On the property there's a huge Banyan tree that has lights strung in it for night time- so pretty! The exchange store is fabulous- best prices on items than anywhere we went. Must try the smoothie machine- F'Real- such a cool concept!
Bibas had very tasty food for dinner. There Hawaiiian pizza was yummy! Koko cafe had a buffet breakfast that my family enjoyed. The snow cones were good (Matsumoto's shave ice reins supreme by far though).
We had a blast in the main pool. They do make kids (not adults) get out the first 15 minutes of every hour. That was not great, but still we had fun!
The beach in front of the hotel is fabulous. The parking garage is pretty convenient, although across the street from the hotel. The hotel itself is in a great location in Waikiki. Easy to navigate around.
There's a gym with nice lockers and a scale if you want to keep in check while on vacation :-) The grounds of the hotel are very tropical and lush.
In total- can't wait to go back and stay at the Hale Koa!!!

Room Tip: 11th floor, full ocean view!!!

I have stayed at the Hale Koa many times. Obviously it being a military hotel, having a spouse in the army allows this to occur. It is a very comfortable hotel, with views from all rooms. I love that it has an adult only pool, because the family pool gets crowded. The staff is always helpful and full of the Aloha spirit. Having a Pleasant Hawaiian tour booking office on site makes this almost an all inclusive resort.

If I were to have one gripe, it would be the lack of wireless access in the guest rooms. Since so many travelers use tablets vs. laptops these days, it was sort of inconvenient to have to sit in the lobby to use the Internet..

I love the Hale Koa and can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: AWESOME sunset views from rooms on the southwest side of the hotel

We had the pleasure of staying at the hale koa in july 2013. We had 2 adjoining rooms. One for the kids (2 teens) and one for adults. Check in leaves a lot to be desired. Prepare for a long wait. With that said they have a nice seating area to wait with your bags. Rooms are good sized but the beds could really use some updating. Noticed a lot of dirty fingerprints on the doors and elevators. Hotel might want to have housekeeping wipe them down a few times a day. Complaints aside this is the best deal around for dod/military families. Lounge chairs and umbrellas on the beach are discounted for military. Be sure to let them know when signing up. Getting a rental car thru the hotel is an exercise in futility. Slower than molasses. Not sure if it is always like that. Get there first thing and early. Breakfast buffet was ok but you can drive down waikiki and find better. New beds and bedding would be a huge improvement. Staff was always friendly when we met them in hallways etc. luau was nice at the hotel but jam packed. So get ready to be squeezed in with 500+ of your friends. Food typical for serving large numbers. Wasnt awful. This place could get 4-5 stars if they put some effort into it. Would i go back to the Hale Koa?? Absolutely.

Our stay at the Hale Koa was wonderful from the open air lobby to the crystal blue waters, it was wonderful. The only minor drawback was the quality of the internet service, they are still using dial up with Wi/FI in the lobby, it was very slow. The staff was wonderful, and the luau was the best. There were 7 of us in our family and we all thought it was great.

Wife and myself returned to Hawaii for first time , 28 yrs after we lived there while stationed at Schofield Barracks in 1985.

Great Room on 8th Floor with Ocean View for $154 per night. We ended up in a double queen bed room, we tried to switch up and get a king, but in our tower there are only 2 king rooms per floor. We ended up being perfectly content with two beds.

Air Conditioner shuts off when patio door is opened. We slept with the door open every night
and drifted off to the sounds from the live entertainment at the pool bar, and awoke to the sounds of the ocean in the morning.

Food: we had good food at Bibas the night we arrived and it was cheaper by about $6.00 per person than similar meals at other local restaurants

KoKo Cafe; We ate the breakfast Buffet $13.95 four of our eight mornings. This price may seem expensive until you go a block down to IHOP and find that an omelet is $14.95 plus coffee, orange juice and tip. At the buffet they had omelets and waffles available every morning along with scrabbled eggs, bacon, wonderful hand made sausage patties, hash browns, sausage gravy, unlimited juice and coffee, toast, pastries, large platters of fresh fruit and it was all fresh and tasty. If you order off the menu you may save a couple of bucks...but you only get what you order.

Luau: Good time by all in our party. Buy tickets early to get the best seats, we waited and ended up at table 69 at the back of the pavilion we could hear fine but we were a long way from the stage. Buy tickets way in advance before you get on plane to visit.

Sunday Brunch: Was wonderful in 1985 and it is still wonderful. Lots of good entrees, lack of lamb, big roast, great pastries. At $35 we thought it was a fair price for an excellent brunch with great service.

Beach at hotel is good, but a bit rocky, we went next door to Hilton's beach and the bottom was soft sand.

Room Tip: Ask for renovated tower. If you like King rooms you may have to use dates they have available, thes...
