“Used the pool and beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2012

We had a great afternoon visit to the Hale Koa. Visited with my military daughter and son in law. FANTASTIC resort. The pool is clean, well cared for, grounds are GORGEOUS. Direct access to the beach and ocean. LOTS of water sports. Areas with shade and sun. Food near the pool. Cant say enough about our great visit!!

The Hale Koa is a very nice hotel for the money. I've been there several times and have never been disappointed with the hotel. Some have said the beds are new and uncomfortable but we were in the remodeled tower and the beds were great. Only problem is with the outside coffee shops and seems like vendors who are allowed on the property. We were disappointed in the lack of aloha with these people. Never a mahalo or thank you. Admitedly they were less money for rolls and coffee than smileys out back but in the Hale Koa with everyone so helpful they were less than friendly. Watch when taking a cab from the airport as they add onto the meter when they stop. Our taxi was $33 so I gave him $35. His comment was thanks alot big tipper. Bell clerk said they already figure a tip into the price so none is needed. All in all the Hale Koa still has it over the rest with the 72 acres and uncrowded beach. Staff is great and the KoKo cafe is very reasonable with senior menu for less and childrens menu. Great part is they bring the childrens food prior to the adults so the child is fed prior to adults getting their food. Others should copy this practice.

Room Tip: Do not tip taxi drivers from the airport. We had rooms on the old remodeled tower on the 4th floor...

We stayed here for 2 nites last week, after several days stay at the Turtle Bay, in the North Shore. This place is much bigger, than i was expecting, it was alsmost a full blown resort. The location for this place is not bad. A cross through the Fort Derussy park and you're right on Kalakaua Avenue, where all the stores/shops in the Waikiki area. There's even a small Exchange in the basement where you can get your souvenirs, snacks/clothings, etc. The rooms here are pretty standard, nothing to rave about, even a bit dated, i would say. Housekeeping is lacking compared to other hotels we've stayed at. We went out snorkeling & shopping & come back after 1:00pm in the afternoon one day, and our room was not cleaned. Since we only stayed for 2 days this didn't bother us much - but just wanted to point it out here, for other guests. Parking is $7/day, in a deck across the street, and internet is another $10/day. Overall, i'd rate this hotel as average, if you're of the mentaility of "I won't be in my hotel room for most of the day anyway" then i'd say book it.

Room Tip: Ocean view room from 6th floor up is pretty nice

There are few places in the world more delightful than the Hale Koa Hotel in Waikiki. And few that are more exclusive; not just anyone can stay there. This is the US Armed Forces Recreation Center for the Pacific so it's limited to Active and Retired Military, their guests, and certain other eligible patrons. Owned by the US Army Office of Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (OWR), the Hale Koa is set right on the Beach on what was once Fort DeRussy. Today, the Fort comprises a 72-acre park which makes the setting the best of any hotel in Waikiki. And before anyone gets their nose out of joint, the Hotel and it's wonderful facilities DON'T COST THE US TAXPAYER ONE CENT! Its operating funds come from room rent, restaurant and facility income, and MWR funds. Compared to similar properties--let's say the Hilton Hawaiian Village directly next door--the Hale Koa is a "best buy". The room rates are reasonable and based on room location/view and sponsoring member's rank, and, frankly, there's not a bad room on the property. The rooms are right up there in quality with other area hotels; the restaurants are excellent (try the coconut cheesecake with strawberries at Bibas!); the pools are wonderful (love the adult guests-only smaller pool); and the multiple amenities. There's even a Post Exchange (PX) right in the hotel and the US Army Museum of the Pacific on the grounds. I just spent a week there and with few exceptions I almost never left the property! There just wasn't any reason to. Everything I needed was right there. But the best thing about the HK: the staff. Aloha Spirit abounds. Every member of the staff treats you as if you were a guest in their own home. They're wonderful! So, if you don't have eligibility for the Hale Koa, find someone who does and strike up a friendship. It's a gem!

The only reason we were willing to stay in the chaos that is Waikiki is because the value of this hotel can't be beat. We stayed in an ocean view room and loved it. Everyone we met was accommodating and friendly. The on site PX was amazing, and we did quite a bit of shopping there before we departed for Kauai.

We weren't overly impressed by the restaurants (except the breakfast buffet, which was really good), and it would have been nice if the pool was open until 10. Also, there were almost always long lines at the front desk...very frustrating.

We attended the luau, and found it to be a good value for our money. The food was delicious, too, which surprised me since we hadn't been impressed with most of the restaurants.

I don't think we could have found a better value anywhere.

We wre staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village next door and had been informed on Trip advisor to try out thsi Hotel for the Lalu as you can get a Guest Pass. We were not dissapointed We eat there on our first night and the food was very nice and exellent service. As it is an American Forces hotel we didnt know what to expect but everone was very polite and helpfull. We purchased tickets for the Lalu show on the Thursday night at a cost of $49 each. On arrival we were given a cocktail and photos taken with the performers, $15 for the photo but something to treasure. After cocktails we were treated to a musical group singing lovely Hawaian songs, after this we were entertainen by dancers along with our cousin climbing a coconut tree and a tour of his insight into the Polanaians coulture, before being led to show us the Pig that had been cooking underground all day ready to be served as part of our feast. We then went to our seats for the show and during this the show whaich lasted through until around 20 30hrs. Thsi all started at 17 30hrs and was an absoulutely fantastic night with fun and laughter with the new friends that we met. I would definitely see about this show once you are there as its not to be missed.
Thank you from England for your Hospitallity.

There is so much to enjoy at this hotel, especially the ocean and park. We stayed in an ocean view room and got a special treat with the fireworks show at the Rainbow Hilton which take place every Friday night, we had a front seat view and what a fabulous show it was. We aso liked eating breakfast at the Koko Cafe in the hotel, with a table on the lanai, we could hear the ocean, see it and also the beautiful park below us, what a way to start the day! The rooms are very nice with comfortable beds, always spotlessly clean and quiet too. We can''t imagine staying anywhere else in Waikiki. The parking garage was far (as mentioned before here) but the bell hops were veery happy to take you to your vehicle and sometimes we caught one going back from dropping someone off.

Room Tip: We paid for an ocean front room and got a city view, when we complained we were moved with no proble...
