Here's the skinny on this location/hotel: It is a very nice hotel. But, it is not a resort. We like to travel to Mexico and thought this year we'd try this "hot spot". It has an ok pool. Just don't expect a pool with waterfalls and a swim up bar. It has the beach right in front of the hotel, yet it's not a large beach. None of the beaches on the strip in Waikiki are large. The hotel has a hot tub yet it shuts down at 3 p.m. on Fri, Sat and Sun. The restaurants i.e. Dukes, Hula Grill and Chuck's Steak house have great food. The bar at Duke's is rather small yet crowded. Also, there is no alcohol allowed on the beach, nor outside of the hotel restaurants. Also, you can rent surfboards and body boards but they don't have jet ski's or para sailing any where in Waikiki.
The staff was very friendly and helpful and we were on the third floor and we had no problem with any type of "noise" issues I've seen addressed in previous postings. They also have terrific sunset view and the water is beautiful and warm.
We were disapointed in the nightlife, or lack of nightlife. Waikiki is like having a beach right in front of Rodeo Drive in Hollywood. High end and low end Shops, shops and shops. The International Market Place was a total let down. This was all low, low end shops. Imagine this: Here in California we have "taco trucks" all around where they drive to a spot and open and then close and leave for the night only to return the next day. At the Marketplace, 10 - 20 "jewelery or nicknake carts" do the same thing. Each has identical wares and each will tell you they are having an 80% off sale on the junk and they all were not local vendors but of Japanese decent...We like more laid back and rural shopping with local populations we can mix with and enjoy. You won't find that here. We took some tours which were easily set up through the hotel and that got us away from the hussle and bussle on the Commercialism.
In short, the hotel is very nice, comfortable and friendly. It wasn't loud but this was October 17-24th, 2004. It is in a shopping hub and every tour you take will take you an hour to get to and you will have to deal with rush hour traffic coming and going. If shopping is your bag this would definitely be the place to stay as you will be in the thick of it. Next time, we'll go back to the resort type hotels of Mexico or try another Island like Maui. Aloha!!
