“Good location, amenities if you want to be in Waikiki”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

This hotel is right on the beach, so you can easily enjoy swimming off Waikiki Beach. There is no snorkeling there, but it is a nice beach swim, though Waikiki Beach is very crowded and popular. The hotel has a nice pool and good showers/stations to rinse off sand, good beach towel service, and a bar at the pool. The negatives are the pool closes at 8pm so no swimming or hot tub activity after that - this seemed to be the custom among the hotels in the area as after 8pm everything is dedicated to dining activities.

The location is good if you want to be in Waikiki - easy walking distance to restaurants (including many excellent sushi and Japenese restaurants), you do not need to rent a car, there are shops and restaurants in the hotel, the concierge can arrange activities, it is an easy walk to local bus and trolly stops, and it is easy to walk to the Honolulu Zoo or Waikiki Aquarium. There is a lot of nearby shopping and the International Marketplace is directly across the street. It is an hour bus ride to Aloha Stadium, and a 30-40 minute bus ride to Hanauma Bay (for snorkeling). (You can arrange a tour or take a taxi instead, of course).

Due to the extremely crowded nature of Waikiki, be aware that it is not quiet. At night you need earplugs to sleep as the sound of all the bars and all the live music all along the beach wafts up to your room and you will not be able to avoid that.

Service was good for the most part here with the exception that one day we did not receive housekeeping, for no known reason, the towel attendant generally did not speak English (you are charged for each towel not returned so you want to get your receipt showing you returned it - good luck - though in the end we were not charged, we were never able to communicate and this never sure...), and the elevators were being serviced so only one or two out of three functioned, causing long lines all the time for elevators. The hotel clearly doesn't want you to take the stairs - they are hidden, and clearly intended only for staff - but in a pinch ask where they are because it beats waiting 15 minutes or more for the elevator if only one is working. One huge plus was they did not air-condition the rooms and place to be too cold - it was comfortable and clean.

Overall it was a good base camp for a vacation. Free wi-fi was offered. If I were to stay in Waikiki again I would certainly consider staying here, but be prepared for the crowds in this area as they are non-stop.

The breakfast buffet at Duke's was nothing special. We did not choose Duke's for dinner as it was standard Western fare, not really regional, and always had a line.

Aloha DAEsmae. Thank you for your informative review about our property and the accessible places of interest throughout Oahu. Your comments about the extremely crowded nature of Waikiki are accurate. The concentrated tourist district of Waikiki is Internationally known for its plethora of shopping, dining, entertainment and nightlife options. Most visitors come to experience this energetic vibe and to enjoy famous Waikiki beach. Unfortunately, some visitors seeking tranquil settings without crowds or traffic, will not find Waikiki to be the perfect vacation destination. Mahalo for sharing your experience with us. We hope to see you again.

Outrigger Waikiki is the perfect place to stay in Waikiki. We had an amazing ocean view room on the 14th floor, and the resort is right on the beach. The staff are super friendly and you don't have to leave the resort with dining and shopping options on site. Dukes is on the ground floor, looking out over the ocean - the perfect location for sunset - make sure you have a 'Lava Flow' cocktail too. Outrigger Waikiki is our home away from home!

This was our first visit to Outrigger "Waikiki on the Beach" this hotel is set perfectly on the beach with Dukes famous Restaurant and Bar on the bottom level. Our room was very nice and quite big, newly remodeled which is always nice. The only complaint about the room is that we found the beds to be a little hard and the pillows were not very soft either. The staff at every turn was very friendly and helpful we give them an excellent rating. from the reception desk, housekeeping staff, concierge to the housekeeping staff.
We ate lunch in Dukes Bar quite a bit, excellent food and great friendly service.
Now the NEGATIVES of this stay: Noise carries up and so we found it quite hard to sleep peacefully at night. Dukes bar was open till 1am it seems on most nights or maybe just the weekends with music playing & people laughing and talking quite loud (understandable), after the second night we had to close our doors which meant the ocean sound was blocked out which is why we spent the $$$$ on a hotel like this and insisted on Ocean Front. The Royal Hawaiian next door let their staff run a four wheeler to rake the beach and set up chairs, bad thing is the operator ran the noisy thing every morning at about 4:30 - 5am then again around 6am this was very disturbing to our relaxation.
The pool staff removed the chairs from a large portion of the deck and shut the hot tub down every day around 5pm to make room for diners and private parties that closed sections of the pool on many nights. We like to relax in the hot tub after the sun goes down. NO CHANCE here.
Our next visit sadly will not be at this hotel.

Aloha Celice C. Thank you for choosing the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. Your positive comments about our location, restaurant, rooms and staff are truly appreciated. We are sorry to hear that there were negative aspects of your stay. As our hotel is located in the heart of energetic Waikiki, and also on the most desirable stretch of beachfront, the sounds of people having a good time can be heard throughout the day and night. Our jacuzzi is open until 8pm on Monday-Thursday. On Friday-Sunday, the jacuzzi closes at 4pm when Duke's Waikiki utilizes the lower pool deck to feature live Hawaiian music by well-known local celebrity entertainers. Mahalo for taking the time to share your feedback with us.

Have stayed at this hotel more than once... great location, great staff, great facilities!

From the moment you walk in you feel at home, all of the staff are happy to help and make you feel at home! The rooms are a great size and have everything you need. When you go down to the pool you can always get a sunbed... for some reason they have reduced the size of the swimming pool but it doesn't restrict too much as most of the time you will use the sea! So close to the sea that you can walk straight out without having to walk miles!

Dukes Bar is great... great service and the breakfast is good too... a little expensive but sometimes you can vouchers from your travel agent... The breakfast buffet is great but at $15 per person it can be expensive if you are with family.

Walk out of the hotel and you are in the middle of the strip with everything you need on your doorstep!

Room Tip: Double rooms for family will get you two beds... if you are traveling as a couple ask before hand to...

Aloha Ross L. Thank you for returning to the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. Hearing that you felt right at home as soon as you walked into our hotel makes us extremely happy. Throughout the year, we look forward to welcoming our return guests back as part of our `Ohana (family) from around the world. As you have noticed, we recently completed renovations to the pool deck and the upgrades include a newly remodeled saltwater swimming pool. The length of the pool was shortened to allow more sunbeds to be placed. In addition, the depth of the entire pool has been reduced so that guests can enjoy more useable space for standing and wading. Mahalo Nui Loa for sharing your experience with us. We hope to see you again very soon.

We just LOVED staying here. Our room was beautiful, clean & spacious. We had a problem with the thermostat. We called the desk & within 5 min maintenance was there to take care of the problem. It is located perfectly on Waikiki Beach. Can't wait to go again.

My husband and I visited to celebrate our 20th anniversary. All of the staff are wonderful and friendly! We were there during the latest tsunami warning. The staff was very proactive in making sure all guests were safe and comfortable. Top notch hotel with beautiful views; wonderful shops (Stop by and see Crystal in Pele Signatures for Hawaiian handcrafted pens; Hawaiian Accessories for amazing fine Koa wood jewelry & gifts) ; fun activities, and excellent restaurants (Duke's breakfast buffet is a must! Hula Grill has great food and prices - try the Hula Pie!). Don't forget to try the sandwich shop downstairs - great sandwiches and prices (my husband LOVED the chocolate chip cookies).

Stayed here for a week in late October with my husband. Hotel is in a great location right in the centre of waikiki and right on the beach. The rooms are clean, my only complaint was the noise of the aircon from the Royal Hawaiian Centre however it did not dampen our holiday at all. Next time I would probably pay the extra for the ocean view room instead. Great selection of restaurants in the hotel and seems like a place to be. If you want to be right in the action this is the hotel for you

Aloha elliecanne. Thank you for staying at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach. We are happy to hear that you and your husband had a wonderful Hawaiian holiday. Our centralized location does provide a lot of action in paradise, as many vacationers visit our property for the best beach, the best restaurants and the best variety of shopping options nearby. We hope you will return for another visit soon. If you prefer to stay in a room on the east side of the building, away from the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, please do not hesitate to let us know after you have made your reservations. Mahalo.
