This hotel is right on the beach, so you can easily enjoy swimming off Waikiki Beach. There is no snorkeling there, but it is a nice beach swim, though Waikiki Beach is very crowded and popular. The hotel has a nice pool and good showers/stations to rinse off sand, good beach towel service, and a bar at the pool. The negatives are the pool closes at 8pm so no swimming or hot tub activity after that - this seemed to be the custom among the hotels in the area as after 8pm everything is dedicated to dining activities.
The location is good if you want to be in Waikiki - easy walking distance to restaurants (including many excellent sushi and Japenese restaurants), you do not need to rent a car, there are shops and restaurants in the hotel, the concierge can arrange activities, it is an easy walk to local bus and trolly stops, and it is easy to walk to the Honolulu Zoo or Waikiki Aquarium. There is a lot of nearby shopping and the International Marketplace is directly across the street. It is an hour bus ride to Aloha Stadium, and a 30-40 minute bus ride to Hanauma Bay (for snorkeling). (You can arrange a tour or take a taxi instead, of course).
Due to the extremely crowded nature of Waikiki, be aware that it is not quiet. At night you need earplugs to sleep as the sound of all the bars and all the live music all along the beach wafts up to your room and you will not be able to avoid that.
Service was good for the most part here with the exception that one day we did not receive housekeeping, for no known reason, the towel attendant generally did not speak English (you are charged for each towel not returned so you want to get your receipt showing you returned it - good luck - though in the end we were not charged, we were never able to communicate and this never sure...), and the elevators were being serviced so only one or two out of three functioned, causing long lines all the time for elevators. The hotel clearly doesn't want you to take the stairs - they are hidden, and clearly intended only for staff - but in a pinch ask where they are because it beats waiting 15 minutes or more for the elevator if only one is working. One huge plus was they did not air-condition the rooms and place to be too cold - it was comfortable and clean.
Overall it was a good base camp for a vacation. Free wi-fi was offered. If I were to stay in Waikiki again I would certainly consider staying here, but be prepared for the crowds in this area as they are non-stop.
The breakfast buffet at Duke's was nothing special. We did not choose Duke's for dinner as it was standard Western fare, not really regional, and always had a line.
