“Soul food by architecture & service (SPG Plat)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed today NEW

The 'pink palace' is in itself a worthy experience; so don't even think of going for the new tower rooms. They are nice, in fact a carbon copy of the Westin Maui's new tower rooms, which are also very nice. But if you have a soul, you'll want to nourish it with the 100 year character of the original building. We got an platinum upgrade (from points stay) to a Garden Suite which are in the original building and was huge, central and quiet. Service is excellent, if not a little slow at times. The pool is no frills, but heated just enough that spending all day floating about keeps you at an ideal temperature (in contrast to the Sheraton next door which is a tad cold). Beach is ..well Waikiki beach people. If you don't mind paying the resort fee, plus $40 for a beach chair each day and high bar prices ($7 coffee, $15 cocktail) this place is ideal (I do mind, but the beach experience is no less without a fancy umbrella and chair). Only gripe is the pool chairs get 'reserved' by 08:00 by inconsiderate folks who rarely appear until noon. Management say they are working on a solution but .. according to the reviews the problem has been known and overlooked for too long.

All in all as a platinum if you have kids and want good value goto the Sheraton (lounge access is a lifesaver). If you want the best service and atmosphere come here, but don't moan about being charged for beach chairs.

Room Tip: Garden suite, original building.

Each Monday evening the Royal Hawaiian Hotel hosts a magnificent luau. We stayed at another hotel but signed up for the Royal Hawaiian luau based on the reviews we read and comments by other folks in Waikiki. Everything was perfect! The food was amazing and several buffet lines were available so you didn't have to wait and you could go back for seconds or dessert whenever you wished. Each guest was given a lei and unlimited drinks. The entertainment was first class and the backdrop was a beautiful view of Diamond Head. This is a small venue situated on their outdoor veranda so most all the seats had a good view; however, we decided to pay for premium seats and ended up at the very front of the stage. Yes, it is a bit pricey but we thought it was well worth it for exceptional food, excellent performances and a wonderful environment. I'd suggest getting to the check-in point early (they start check-in at 5:00 pm but folks were already lined up by then) so you can get the best seating.

We visited the Mai Tai bar on our first day in Waikiki. We were made to feel very welcome and that our custom was very much appreciated. The Mai Tais were awesome. We were able to have a little wander through the ground floor and it appeared to be truly magnificent and filled with old fashioned charm. I would have loved to have stayed here.

Room Tip: Only visited the bar

We had been planning this for 18 months to celebrate my 50th birthday with 14 family and friends who had all travelled from Australia for the occasion. The hotel is beautiful with a rich history and wonderful staff, some of whom have worked there for a very long time. We stayed in a garden suite overlooking the Royal Grove. It was quiet and peaceful as friends had said we were mad for staying right on the beach in Waikiki due to the noise issues. The room itself was exceptionally clean and well maintained, with the signature heavenly bed and a complimentary serve of banana bread upon check in. Mai Tai bar excellent, room service excellent, the jewel in the crown is the Azure restaurant where we celebrated my 50th birthday with their 5 course tasting menu. We started off with pre-dinner drinks in one of the cabanas outside. It was a beautiful balmy evening, palm trees swaying - the food was sensational, beautifully presented. A special touch is the service at the table, not quite gueridon service, but a roasted winter squash soup with Kona Lobster saw the waiter pour the soup on each individual's plate around the Kona Lobster as it was served to the table and, another course of Sashimi and Big Island greens was also individually dressed with soy vinaigrette at the table. It was a very nice touch that added to a very special occasion. In summation, a grand old hotel with amazing food and staff. I cannot speak highly enough about this hotel and the team who work there. Well done Royal Hawaiian, hope to see you again soon!

Beautiful location & Idyllic positioning to beach. Wonderful breakfast & amazing restaurant. However being a family of 4, we value peace & quiet in our room and we did not get this at Royal Hawaiian. We could hear EVERYTHING that was being said in the adjoining room, thankfully it was just obnoxiously loud talking rather than anything else - would have been very awkward to explain to our 12 & 9 year old. The staff did offer another room for the night, but on venturing to that room at 1 AM I could hear music from a neighbouring hotel, so decided to stay put in the room we had. Location, food, amenties and overall feel and decor of hotel were great - but if you are looking for sound proofed rooms, this is not the best option.

I have to start this review by admitting that I love Maui and have visited the big island and Kauai as well. That being said...I don't think I would ever travel 12 hours again to see Honolulu.
The RH is nice for a very old hotel, they do what they can with what they have. The service was good throughout the hotel. Concierge desk was very attentive and helpful.
The beach is awful...small/packed with too many people and the water is cloudy with tons of shells that hurt your feet. We spent 50$ for front row chairs, only to have people walk up with coolers-chairs and sit right in front of us. Packed like sardines....so not worth the long plane ride. The tiny RH pool was better.
We stayed in the royal tower and had a great ocean view. The room was ok. The bathroom had a tub with a shower curtain yuk yuk yuk.
It s 2015, I was shocked when I asked where to put my bottles at bell desk and they told me they don't recycle. Not 1 recycle trash can on the property. Shame on you RH. Most hotels now have separate trash bins in rooms for plastic bottles.
Over all it just doesn't compare to the Fairmont or Four Seasons in Maui and I m not sure how they came up with 5 Star rating.
Bottom line if you are planning a trip to Hawaii, pass on Honolulu and go to Maui.
I m giving RH 4 Stars bc the staff really works hard and tries to make the best of this shabby old hotel and you can use the Sheraton pool next door.

My wife and I stayed for 4 wonderful nights in a historic garden room which was very comfortable, quiet and had excellent bathroom amenities. Pool, Beach,Restaurant and Bar were exceptionally good. All the staff were happy, friendly and extremely helpful throughout our stay.
