“feeling of old time hawaii”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

If you want the feeling of what Hawaii was, stay in the historic wing, the hallways are filled with pictures of old Hawaii and the entrance doors to the room are thick wooden and carved. The rooms while not large are adequate and you still get the right feel. Bathrooms are nice sized and modern.
Staff is friendly and accommodating
The only drawback is the if you want an umbrella and chair on the beach it will cost you at least $20.00 per chair per day.
There are free chairs at the pool but only of a limited amount

Room Tip: in historic wing, ocean view rooms are mor desireable

Our family spent four nights and the Royal Hawaiian last week and enjoyed every minute of our stay. Upon arrival we were upgraded to an oceanfront Historic Junior Suite overlooking the beach and Diamond Head and could not have been happier. The room was immaculate and well appointed. We were originally booked in a Royal Grove room and actually viewed the type of room were supposed to get and they would have been fine as well but with a party of four (two children along) the suite was perfect. The bedding was great and the amenities in the room (shampoos etc.) were upscale. I have seen reviews about rooms not being cleaned and could not fathom this since ours was cleaned daily and every evening there was a second turn down service which also included replacement of used towels and any shampoos etc. which were used. They did this for every room on my floor from what I can tell. The grounds and public spaces of the hotel are absolutely beautiful and timeless. From the scene as you drive up to the front of the hotel to the lobby etc. the hotel is incredible and brings you back to the elegance on the 1930s. Fresh flowers are everywhere and the gardens are beautiful.

The hotel restaurants are expensive but you would expect that in Waikiki and this class of hotel. There are many food options outside the hotel if this is an issue and, the location of the RH cannot be beat - you are literally in the middle of the action and mere steps from a very upscale shopping center yet within acres of landscaped grounds which provide an escape from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki.

The pool is very small and we never used it; however, the hotel is adjacent to the Sheraton Waikiki and you can use their pool which is large and very family friendly. Because lounge chairs are limited by the RH pool, we opted to rent the umbrella and chairs available in the cordoned off area of the beach in front of the hotel. Yes the price for the beach chairs with tax is about $40.00 but the view is great and you do not have to worry about rushing to get down to a chair at dawn to "reserve" one before there are none to be had. The Sheraton Waikiki has a much larger area for lounge chairs but they were always full and I am sure they are almost impossible to get unless you are there when the pool opens.

The staff at the hotel are very friendly - especially the concierge desk, front desk and those lovely ladies who came every evening to offer a turn down for the beds.....

Prior to coming to Hawaii we had a booking at the Moana Surfrider for an ocean front room in one of their newer buildings and we were not sure which hotel to go with. Upon arrival it became obvious that we made the right choice since you just cannot beat the beautiful grounds and common areas of the RH and the great ambiance which exists at this hotel.

A perfect hotel for a perfect vacation destination.

Room Tip: There is a newer Tower attached to this hotel which I am sure is nice but for the true Royal Hawaiia...

Beautiful beachfront property. The hotel grounds are immaculate. The rooms however could use some work. Our room was slightly dirty and did not get cleaned the entire time we visited. Sure our towels were switched and beds made, but the floor had dried liquid on it near our fridge and it was never washed. Great Bidet though! Pool is VERY small but has beautiful glass tile work, nice hot tub. Needs an old fashioned ice cream parlor near by. All I wanted the entire time I was there was root beer float! concierge staff was very helpful. Shopping is literally right outside the front door and it was amazing! great location and beautiful historical building! love the pink!

Room Tip: the tower rooms were dirty, but the view and location cannot be beat. Needs updating!

We just wrapped up a one-week stay at the Royal Hawaiian and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We chose it on short notice after originally reserving (6 months ago) at the Hilton Hawaiian Village mega-complex.

This property sits in a cluster with other Starwood-branded properties including the Sheraton and the Westin. After exploring other high-end Waikiki hotels, including the lovely Halekulani, during our week in town, we concluded this had by far the best beachfront location, at the apex of the curved beachfront with sparkling turquoise blue water, good surf, and a clear view of Diamond Head crater to the southeast.

The service in every department of the resort was uniformly outstanding and the personnel -- from valets and registration personnel to restaurant servers, beachfront attendants and housekeepers -- were gracious and helpful. Food and beverage offerings were top quality, though priced to match. The property has three restaurants/bars (one formal, open in evenings; one for breakfast and lunch, both indoor and open-air; and a Mai Tai bar with light afternoon/evening fare). It seemed that only one place operated at a time, though, and we wished for a few more options -- yet understand that a resort operator can't spread itself too thin in Waikiki's intensely competitive food and beverage market.

The only negative -- but a real one that I hope the investors and Starwood's management will consider seriously -- is that the physical plant looks a bit tired and in need of a major capital expenditure to replace stained, faded carpets, refinish terrazzo surfaces, and refurbish guest rooms. We've stayed in other 'Grande Dame' hotels like this before their face lifts, and the difference afterwards is stunning.

All things considered, we'd come right back here. It was a five-star location and service experience -- at a five-star price -- but in a four-star physical plant that just needs some TLC.

Room Tip: Avoid the Spa loft suites. Although this was the only large-space option available to us on short n...

The hotel itself is quite a period marvel. We felt like we were on a film set. Very elegant. Our room was in the ocean view tower. We really liked the room. The Azure restaurant in the hotel was first rate with fresh seafood. We also loved the Mai Tai bar overlooking the ocean. But, I can't imagine this place at the height of the tourist season. It was packed. Primarily with Japanese tourists. The pools were so jammed with people you couldn't see the bottom. The area around the hotel is saturated with expensive stores and malls. Ugh. The man made beach in front of the hotel is nice but crowded. We walked away from the town center to Diamond Head and found amazing beaches that were virtually empty. Be wary the tides are strong. We took a day trip to Pearl Harbor. The experience was both inspiring and sobering. We will never go back to the Royal Hawaiian but we are glad we went.

I stayed for 2 nights with my mum and 4 year old. The grounds are beautiful and the original building is fantastic, we stayed in a ocean view twin room which was small but I did expect this. The arrival treats of banana bread and Logan fruit was a nice touch and all the staff are friendly. This is where the positives end. We went to use our safe before going to the pool at around 1pm we called down to say it was not working and where told security had to fix it no problem we took our stuff and said for them to cone while we where out we came back and stayed in the room, at around 6 pm we decided to get dinner and went to the safe and nobody had fixed it, we had to call again and finally security came this is supposed to be a luxury collection property this should not happen. The pool at the royal is tiny almost like a plunge pool and it was so warm like bath water it was unpleasant, the next day we went to the Sheraton pool this was fantastic but not enough deck chairs and no umbrellas so if you are not swimming you are in the sun. Housekeeping needs work we had empty dirty champagne glasses that sat in our room the whole stay for the price charged and standard I don't think this is acceptable.
The other negative since it is attached to a mall it is really busy
Overall if you have points and want to try it go ahead but if you just want a beautiful Waikiki hotel look at halekulani that is proper luxury

What a treat to stay at this iconic location. And they deliver the most delicious banana nut bread muffins to your room- with the recipe! Although I have been to Honolulu several times this was my first time to stay at the Royal Hawaiian hotel for a business meeting. I had a lovely garden suite on the first level of the historic building. Check in was a little slow but it was probably because of the international guests in front of me who needed extra help. The hotel is situated in a fabulous location with an incredible view of Diamond Head. A walk on Waikiki beach is a must as it is an ideal location with a fair stretch for walking early in the morning. The hotel is tucked back but you have access to tons of shopping and restaurants. It is a crowded street outside the hotel especially at night. But you will find it easy to locate inexpensive food for the entire family.
