“Lunch on the beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2014

I just wanted to thank our server Richard Chan. We decided to visit the Royal Hawaiian while staying at a property further down the beach. Lunch was wonderful and in fact we returned once more before the end of our stay. Richard was attentive and exemplified the art of service. While we didn't stay overnight at the resort the atmosphere of the public spaces was spectacular. If you're in Honolulu, stop by and please send our best to Richard!

We go to Hawaii often, and one spot we enjoy is the Royal Hawaiian. Its often called the Pink Hotel, because its all Pink.
Over the years this hotel has has its share of updates and on a recent trip we enjoyed the newer more modern touches. It is a large hotel, but it is not in a high-rise and feels like a small hotel. The rooms are spread out and all surrounded by gardens.
Rooms are on the smaller side, but who is staying in the room in Hawaii! Bathrooms were nice and bedding was great!
The beach is right outside the hotel, and they have a sectioned off private section of the hotel with chairs which is great.
One work or warning, they do not let you take drinks from the pool bar to the beach! Its literally 10 feet away! They put them in special cups so the security knows what has alcohol in it. Crazy, so bring a plastic water bottle to put your Mai Tai in so you can take it to the beach. :)

Room Tip: Garden rooms are a little dark, so if you want sun in the room get a beachside room.

Property is very tired and overshadowed by hotels on both sides. The older rooms have high ceilings and comfortable beds, but unfortunately, the bathrooms are very small. Food was decent but overpriced. If you want a better quality meal head over to the Sheraton next door. You can even charge meals in those restaurants to your room at the RH. Access to the beach was excellent; however, beach chairs had to be rented...umbrellas extra. Not an uncommon practice for hotels with lower rates but at $299 per night and higher you'd think you'd get a beach chair. Waikiki Beach is VERY crowded so you're better off staying at the pool even though it is not much bigger than a hot tub. As far as the staff they we very helpful and courteous. If you want to experience Hawaii, skip Honolulu and the Royal Hawaiian. Instead, I recommend a stay in Maui at a Luxury Collection Resort n that Island.

Room Tip: Pick a different hotel

Dear tenkiller2112,
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. We truly regret to learn that you did not enjoy your time here at The Royal Hawaiian and we apologize that our bathrooms, dining options and beach and pool offerings did not meet your expectations. As you mentioned, Waikiki is not favored by all and although we are the only Luxury Collection resort in Hawaii, we do have other Starwood properties on neighbor islands. Thank you again for your honest feedback. We certainly value your comments and have shared them with our team for improvement.

If you fancy the beach, grand bedrooms, beach view and the stretch of Waikiki beach, and experience one of the pioneer grand hotels in Hawaii, this is the place to be. You enjoy the beach on one side and grand shopping and fine dining on the other side of the street .
However, not much can be said on some front desk people , compared to housekeeping and concierge, the latter are more friendly and accommodating than the frontliners.

Room Tip: beach front is best than the garden side.. too noisy

Overpriced and ave service. This is an amazing hotel with so much history,it stops about there.

If you want to eat in the beachfront restaurant be prepared to share your table and food with the local birds, I wish it was a couple in bikinis, unfortunately the pigeons are protected here and not even the wait staff will assist in removing them.

Rooms are noisy with doors closing sending vibrations through the walls, to be expected in such an old style hotel. There's plenty of other noisies associated with its age.

Service is lacking, possibly the fact of the volume of people coming through the large hotel. There's a lot of attitude from the guys on the beach, maybe too cool for us tourists!!!!! The nicest welcome
Comes from housekeeping, always smiling.

FYI, best coffee in
town is the Honolulu coffee co.

Dear Hdav33,
We truly regret to learn that your stay with us was less than satisfying. We apologize that our outdoor dining offering did not meet your expectations and we apologize that our team did not properly accommodate you in the indoor section of our Surf Lanai. We also apologize that you did not receive a warm sense of aloha from our beach and pool team, as this is uncharacteristic of our ambassadors. We're disappointed to learn of our shortfalls in service delivery, however we appreciate your honest feedback and we hope you will consider offering us another opportunity to welcome you back again.

My husband, son and I stayed one night on two ocean front rooms at this property - prior to boarding a Hawaiian cruise. The view from our adjoining ocean front tower rooms was spectacular. We were eager to stay at this grand dame of a property, but it's in need of a few cosmetic lifts.
First, after a 10 hour flight having to wait in line for more than 20 minutes to check in was a little disconcerting, especially as there were unmanned desks. Had I not had the time to stand and look around I'm sure I'd not have noticed the frayed and separating rug in the check in area - it's big and clearly once was beautiful. I tried to keep my eyes on the lush courtyard but it wasn't easy. We got to our rooms and were more than ready to freshen up before a walk on the gorgeous beach and dinner. I was surprised by the things overlooked in the room: a beautifully carved wood bed tray was placed on the bed but was covered in a thick layer of dust; the bathroom had an updated sink and vanity and fancy commode (to appeal to the Japanese tourists especially) but the tub/shower combo is circa 1975. I know oriental guests stayed previous to us in our room because to my horror their hair was in the tub- I am blonde and my husband is bald, so there was no mistaking that. Dust covered the phone and around the tv, too. For the price I expect a clean room. Truly.
The banana muffins brought to us were wonderful and again I couldn't rave more about our ocean front views, but the lack of cleanliness in both rooms (our son's was in similar state) was disappointing.
I hope the hotel upgrades the showers to match the rest of the bathrooms, and also notes the attention needed to dusting. Not sure we would stay here again unless these improvements are made - there are plenty of other options. Based on the view and old charm I wanted to love this stay - left a little disappointed.

Dear kwagmeister,
We truly regret to learn that your stay with us was hampered by the wait time at check-in as well as the cleanliness of your room and bathroom. This is most certainly not the experience we'd like our guests to have and we apologize for our shortfalls in these areas. Please know that we've shared your review with our management team, particularly our director of housekeeping who has requested for the room numbers in which you and your son stayed so that we can follow-up with the ambassador responsible for ensuring the rooms meet our cleanliness standards. We've sent you private message requesting for this information. We truly appreciate your honesty, as this allows us to continually enhance our service and products.

I stayed here for a night while on a business trip. Though the property is beautiful and the location is desirable, the hotel itself isn't very private. I felt like any person walking off the main boulevard or staying at the adjoining hotel had access to the property and people kept walking through it.

Good restaurant and service though.
