“The Pink Palace, and old fave”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2013

We were lucky to stay in the newer, tower section of the Pink Palace, so had a nice view of Waikiki beach from our balcony. The hotel itself, however, is dated; the pool is small, and has only one restaurant open for breakfast and lunch, and the fancier one open for dinner. However, it is right next to a large shopping mall, where there are plenty of choices for eating and shopping. Our room was comfortable and clean. The view, as mentioned, was outstanding. We were on a tour that stayed here - but I'm sure there are more modern hotels on the beach that have been renovated. If you like the old style and some of the history of the Pink Palce, stay here.

Room Tip: Choose the oceanfront tower rooms - great view!

We as a family of 5 travelling together stayed here recently. My mother inlaw had her own room with a king size bed and our family of 4, including 2 teenage children, had a room with 2 double beds in the Royal Grove Garden Rooms overlooking the Coconut Grove. Our rooms were on the same floor close by and they were beautifully decorated. Had heard that the bathrooms were a little small being in the old historical wing but they were nicely renovated and we managed fine. Perhaps some extra hooks to hang used bath towels would be helpful.
The check in process went very smoothly, there were no crowds at all. We received a lovely lei , a cold fruit juice when we arrived at reception and the staff were polite and helpful.
We had a la carte breakfast each morning in the Surf Lanai which was in a beautiful spot overlooking the beach directly and the service was excellent.
We spent a couple of nights at the Mai Tai Bar on the beach for evening cocktails and the bar food was excellent.
Housekeeping could be attended a little earlier in the day, one day we came back to our room at 2pm and I had to ask for the room to be done, otherwise the rest of the stay went fine. Housekeeping staff were friendly and very obliging.
The hotel pool we didn't use as we preferred the beach, the kids enjoyed using the Sheraton pool with slides next door as well.
We loved our stay at The Royal Hawaiian, it was a very special place to
stay at, great location on Waikiki Beach , a very beautiful hotel that one day we hope to return to.

if you know what to expect you you will not disappointed. but if you have been to a real luxury resort this is not the same kind of luxury. the welcoming was nice, we did not get a room with a kind size bed as requested, we got 2 double beds so I could not sleep with my husband because he is very tall. the room 229 is very small and is a connecting room. NO balcony and not very clean. in the middle of the night the couple next door had an argument and we could very well hear all the husband had to say to his wife which was not very nice. the next morning they changed our room to 552. bigger room - no king size bed and no balcony. room was not conecting to another one so it was definitely more quiet but we could hear the elevator ring every time it arrived on our flor.
the manager did NOT offer any excuses nor any good will offer for the trouble. any other hotel would have.
that said the lobby is very nice, the rooms are cute. so if the price is right then go ahead but know you will have to get up early in the morning if you want a chair at the small pool. if you want chairs on the beach, depending on where you choose your location on the beach you will have to pay $40 or $50 per day.
TRH charges $35 per day for resort fees which includes parking (even if you do not have a car) one drink on you arrival day and free calls. it will be added to your bill.

Room Tip: ask for a non connecting room and a room that is not close to the elevator. we were in the main buil...

Dear cathy r,
We truly regret to learn that your recent stay with us was anything less than exceptional. We apologize that the requested king bed room was not available during your stay, which we understand is not desirable for a couple on vacation. We also apologize that your rooms did not have balconies. One of the nuances of being a historical building is the unusual architectural design. The hotel was built when travelers came to Hawaii by Matson Steamers, which influenced the building's design. Because these travelers spent days on the open ocean, they desired rooms without large access ways to the outdoors but instead had simple windows that overlooked gardens versus the ocean. As a registered building in the National Historic Registry our hotel must strive to maintain, as much as possible, the original architecture. Unfortunately this often makes it challenging for us to provide all of our guests with ocean view and balcony rooms. Regardless of the design, we apologize that we were unable to deliver on your desired requests. We appreciate your honest feedback regarding your stay with us and we hope you will consider offering us another opportunity to extend our hospitality to you.

Wow, what a beautiful unique hotel. The staff are very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Concierge service was very helpful. Wish our beach chairs (that we rented) were closer to the ocean. The original mai tai was great and it was nice to sit at the bar overlooking the ocean. The rooms were very clean and beds were comfortable. The pool was quite small. This is a very busy area in Honolulu but was surprisingly quite once we got to the pool side of the hotel. The area has PLENTY of shopping and restaurants if you like to do that sort of thing while on vacation.

Stopped off in Waikiki in between Tahiti and Sicily with my wife and we stayed at the Royal Hawaiian because it was uniquely pink, and icon in Waikiki.

We arrived around 7:30am from the airport and was greeted by an extremely friendly staff. Helped us check in and gave us all the information we needed, including that we have a complimentary bottle of champaign waiting for us in our room...when its ready. But at the moment we can use the hospitality room as someone is still staying in our assigned room. Great, no problem!

When we went to the hospitality room, the key card didn't work. Tried it several times but couldn't get in. Went back downstairs where they recoded it, and apologized for the inconvenience. But when I returned, it still didn't work. Had a cleaning crew try their card, won't open...security showed up, but still didn't work. Finally the maintenance crew arrived and opened the door for us, and started to repair. Things break, I understand, so I didn't have an issue with this.

When we entered the hospitality room, though, we were a bit set back. All the trash cans were overflowing with garbage. Luckily its was food packaging and apparently the previous guests finished the food otherwise it would have been worse. Went to the bathroom and a lot of towels were thrown on the floor, and a bunch of partially used shampoo/conditioner/body wash was in the shower room. Was a real mess. This was the only time I wore my sandals in the shower, seeing the condition of it. While I understand its a public hospitality room, wish management would have scheduled a cleaning staff to show up once every few hours to check on the condition of the hospitality room and service it if needed...and it definitely needed it prior to our arrival.

At any rate, back to our stay...the room was absolutely beautiful and the view of Waikiki Beach, Diamondhead and the ocean was outstanding. Couldn't have been happier with the room itself. Wireless and parking was included with the compulsory charge so no complaints as we had a rental. It was a bonus that we could have up to 3 units accessing the wireless...though the Hotel Imperiale in Taormina, Sicily allowed up to 5 units (for management reference). :)

Room was kept nicely throughout our stay...but at the end of our stay was where the service lost a point. We had those vacuum seal bags and had called room service to see if we can borrow a vacuum. I explained the reason for it, they understood and said someone will be right over. We waited for over 45min when someone did show up, but only to check to see if were still around (no vacuum in hand). So we waited until we decided to give up, finally finished packing our bags (two were on hold until we had the vaccuum) and left.

Aside from these two issues (hospitality room and room service), we did enjoy our stay at the Royal Hawaiian. This was my wife's first stay at this hotel and it was at least my 2nd time here, possibly third trying to remember whether I stayed here when I was 5 or 7 yr old as a kid when my family was flying through Honolulu. We both enjoyed the beautiful setting, as I had remembered from the last time I was here, and would definitely stay here again in the future.

Room Tip: Tower Oceanfront has a beautiful view of Waikiki Beach, the Diamondhead crater, and the ocean.

We have just arrived back from a glorious 8 night stay at this wonderful hotel and I feel compelled to write a review straight away. From the moment my husband and 2 daughters aged 12 and 7 arrived, the level of service and warmth shown by the staff across the board was remarkable.
We were celebrating our 17th wedding anniversary and had a bottle of champagne in our room. We were also invited to the Manager's Cocktail Party on both our first and last nights and were served gorgeous cocktails by Les behind the bar. He was wonderful with our daughters, making them Shirley Temples on demand and keeping them entertained. Concierge were also excellent, arranging a last minute car rental of a convertible for us. My daughters also attended the complimentary quilt, bracelet and lei making classes, especially enjoying the quilt making and the fabulous Patricia who showed a special interest in both of the.
I could go on and on about the outstanding location, old world charm, the outstanding Luau we all attended and cannot speak highly enough of this "oasis" on a hotel. We are already plotting our return and would not consider staying anywhere else in Waikiki-don't hesitate to book.

Room Tip: Definitely stay in the Royal Tower with a lanai-the rooms directly overlook both the beach and pool...

Located right at Waikiki Beach, this hotel has a long standing history. What is even more impressive is the high level of service, attention to detail and anticipation of one's wishes. We had a lovely garden-view junior suite with amazingly comfortable beds and enjoyed the included breakfast at the beach front. The hotel is in great shape, very clean and thoroughly looked after. Had an amazing time and are happy to return again, even if the prices are on the steep side.
